Young, Delmas fight

Not trying to validate Young's behaviour by any means but Delmas does appear to be a bit of a chirper and I'm guessing he was probably the person who initiated it.

I'm just glad our 2 biggest young offensive stars (Stafford and Megatron) appear to have a good head on their shoulders. Still, I shudder to think at how undisciplined this team would be if we didnt have veterans like Vandenbosch and Burleson doing their best to keep everyone in line.

+1.

I don't doubt that at all. Young was probably provoked, but the way he responded won't cut it. Management did the right thing. These guys are probably amped up to return to work, TDY is missing out and will probably apologize and be back soon enough.

He has no choice but to apologize.

Most teams have a clown or two. Not sure I could think of one that doesn't.

Not just one or two, it's Titus, the group of potheads, and Suh's antics during the latter part of 2011.

But I'd rather they be clowns off the field than on (Millen era).

Mehh pull it together by the season and play smarter. If Young is getting personal fouls again during the game one more time, then it's a big problem. He's already been benched during a game and kicked out of OTAs. Nothing more for Schwartz to do. He can't fine during non mandatory OTAs.

The league policy, random drug tests and suspensions will make Fairley and Leshoure learn their lessons quick. Better this year than down the road IMO. And Suh paid the price already too. We'll see what happens on game days from here on out before I'll worry too much.

The fact is if this team is going to take the next step we need the entire team to stop all the BS and focus on the prize. We especially need Titus and Delmas.

From what i hear on the NFL Network (Heath Evans), is that Young suckered Delmas in the weightroom..lol. I can see some blows on the field because it's common but to see it off the field disturbs me a bit. Knowing Delmas for the mouth he is, this must have escalated from the field. Young is a Detroit street kid who doesn't back down from shit i guess. Saying that, he needs to be smarter on his actions.

But its not just unusual for the Lions. The NFL has lots of bonehead teams. Some teams like the Bengals make the Lions look like angels.

This was stupid by Young. I am glad we have a lot of tough guys who wont back down on this team but for it to be a sucker punch on a teammate is both stupid and reckless. Lets hope they put this behind them.

This reminds me of HBO's OZ where the geeky guy suckers the Neo Nazi who burned a swastika into his ass in the prison weight room with a dumbell.

What I'm trying to say is that Delmas really must have got under his skin, or the history of this goes deeper; because you don't go after someone in the weight room hours after the fact unless things have boiled over.

In the end though the fight doesn't really matter as long as they can keep Young's discipline/temper in line. They are on either side of the ball, they don't even have to have each other's back or even like each other.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young was not with his teammates for their OTAs Monday. Initial reports were that the Lions had barred Young from the sessions because he punched safety Louis Delmas last week. However, Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com cited multiple sources Tuesday who said Young was not asked to stay away, nor is he absent due to a team-imposed suspension.

"That obviously lends the question as to why Young, a second-year player with a lot of promise, would be absent from the team's first voluntary OTA practice," wrote Twentyman.

"That's an answer Young will have to provide when he eventually joins his teammates."

Even though these are voluntary sessions, Young is missing out on valuable training opportunities this summer -- especially after missing all of his rookie offseason due to the lockout. While the club's long-term plan is for Calvin Johnson, Titus Young and rookie Ryan Broyles to be their primary receivers for years to come, Young and Broyles likely will be battling often for action on the field in 2012.

While Young was absent Monday, Broyles was surprisingly on the field, just five months after ACL surgery, according to Twentyman.

"You are not going to see him competing against any defensive backs and things like that, but we'll start increasing his workload and increase his workload based on how his body feels," coach Jim Schwartz said.

"We sort of take each day as a new day with no real preconceived notions with him. He's had a very good rehab. He's doing very, very well and we're expecting a contribution from him this year."

Time will tell how soon Broyles will be working out with Young, but ESPN NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert isn't buying the notion that the Lions haven't played a role in Young's absence from OTAs:

Also, i was at work tonight and a co-worker of mine told me that Calvin and all the WR's went to the Tigers game over the weekend (which is true) and he said Calvin told Young to stay home. How true is that and if it is, what the fuck is up?

What I've read is that Young wasn't there, and when they asked Calvin about it, he said he couldn't talk about it. IDK what the hell is going on, it seems a little bizarre at this point, but I'll trust what Nate says, so I'm not worried.

"We exchange text messages and he's just ready to work," Burleson said. "Titus is probably one of the hungriest young athletes I've been around, and that is where a lot of his emotion and passion come from. I feel like a lot of guys on the team are close to him, but I've been more hands on than anything. I love him like a little brother. I'm just looking for him to get back to work."

"We (Burleson and Stephen Tulloch) were working out," Burleson said. "I don't know if it was a punch, a push or a shove. It's one of those things that happen all the time. When I played in Minnesota, we fought like every other day, and we were the closest team that I've been on up until that point. A scuffle in every eight or nine months here, that's something rare. That shows you we don't do it often.
"In '03, fights were part of the game. It's just with a lot of the rule changes and discipline problems, people frown upon stuff like that. I would just like to say it wasn't that serious."
Burleson said he is unsure when Young will return to offseason workouts, but wants him back.
"I'm pretty sure when he gets back to work, it will be business as usual," Burleson said. "We're not concerned. There aren't any cancers on this team or anybody that is dragging us down. We have a strong team, and we're headed in the right direction since I signed here a couple of years ago, and we have done nothing but improve and the organization has done nothing but improve and make great decisions in putting guys in Lions jerseys.
"I'm not going to start questioning the organization and the people they select to come here because of a couple of mistakes. In life, that's going to happen, especially when you're young. I just hope that people, one, don't listen to exaggerated stories, and two, realize we all make mistakes."

Makes me feel a little more at ease.

This team needs to stop with all the "mistakes" though and just get back to work.

Agree. I'm not sure whats worse: watching a shitty team lose, or watching a talented team sabotage itself.

The reason I heard for not Calving not bringing Titus to the Tiger's game was that Titus had already had the altercation with Delmas, since it happened last week, and therefore Calvin didn't bring him along as punishment.

Punishment? That's weak....

I'd go with "B". Watching a shitty team lose is easy. They're shit, right? You expect them to lose.

Now, watching a talented team sabotage themselves is mind-blowing. All kinds of good shit in the works and they just completely shoot themselves in the foot over and over again. That hurts....
