Michigan men's basketball is in first place. How about that?

it feels nice, but the upcoming schedule is brutal.

Yeah rest of the schedule is pretty brutal. It's all good though. Just gotta wait until McGary, GRIII, and Staskaus show up next year. Mich gonna be ballin out. I could see Dicky V doing a game at Crisler next year and going nuts.

yeah, I don't expect it to last.

still, I will enjoy us being #1 for the time being.

it will be the "happy place" I go to when we lose, and people start whining and complaining and bashing Beilein, Douglass, Smotrycz, etc. etc. ...

I'm hoping this team is good enough to avoide many multi-game slides and keep the irrational crying from fans to a minimum. This road stretch is insane though..

Even though it likely won't last the rest of the way, it's still pretty amazing how far the program has come and how re-established it now is and will be. Being a perennial Top 20 hoops program again has been a long road back.

it was a painful road too.

except for the '02 season when Horton was a freshman sensation (and we were under a post-season ban), there wasn't much to like from fall '97 until Beilein's second season. even during Amaker's above-average seasons, they still looked shaky against just about everyone.

that was like 10 years of bad basketball...

on top of the scandal; bad coaching. Ellerbe was just a bad coach, period. one good first season w/Fisher's talent, then they collapsed. And I remember the race card being played when they fired him, or were talking about firing him. I wonder if he had anything to do with that, or if that was just some hack reverend's PR move?

Amaker has Harvard playing well now, so I don't think he was a hopeless case. but in hindsight it's clear he couldn't cut it in the Big Ten. teams were just sloppy and weak.

Michigan basketball went for the anti-Urban Meyer hire with Ellerbe, IMO. Then the Amaker ties to Duke helped re-brand M hoops and Beilein has completed the renovation. The TV bans and other considerations made it hard to follow the team for a while also. I'm not a big basketball fan and have never pretended to be, but I'm very excited for the remainder of the season and ability to see some of these games (on ESPN/2 and BTN).

I'd rather the team be in first place today facing the brutal upcoming schedule than not be in first place today facing the brutal upcoming schedule.
