2014 Draft Thread

The Patriots draft this way, in multiples. No more Aging Burleson running screens, no more Durham drops, no more waiting on Broyles to emerge.
Scheme and coaching will improve our DBS faster than the draft IMO. We have what, 5 young guys who run a 4.4 or faster Green and Greenwood run a 4.2...the atleticism is there but their instincts have to improve. But I agree with you Tom, no arguments grabing a cb and a saftey in the draft.

The Pats do it because they usually trade down and have more picks. That is a draft strategy that I like. If you trade down and grab more picks / players there is a better chance that some will pan out. When you only have 6-8 picks it is less likely that you get players that will contribute.

From 2014 draft, 1st round

D Milliner starting CB
DJ Hayden, CB, played well before going on injured reserve
E Reid, S, starting for 49ers and is an impact safety
X Rhodes, starting CB for Vikings
M Elam, starting S for the Ravens.

Elam and Reid played well. If you chalk up the rest as Starters well then add Slay and Green and Greenwood and Bentley because technically they started games too, and did about as good as Millner and Rhodes. Look at the Mo Claibounres, Amukamaras, Jimmy Smiths, even Pat Petersons first year. These guys take time to emerge, if they emerge at all. Our DC coached both Elam and Smith and Smith took time, I think the secondary will benefit from him more than adding another raw guy, there is a big jump for a guy like Dennard from covering Gallon to covering B. Marshall.

That would be ideal. I'd be all for a trade down. If a qb somehow falls past the Vikes that someone wants to develop, AZ or Tenn, come to mind , we may be able to do it. But in the scenario where Watkins is there I think you jump.

Watkins would be perfect but I don't think he falls to 10. To me he is the best WR in the draft. I don't think the Raiders pass on him and if they do I think the Vikings take him at 8

They shouldn't reach for a WR just to take a WR but if WR is BPA in Round 1 an 2. Take them both because we need 2. Having Burleson as the second best WR on this team for the 4th year in a row could be a big disaster.

Safety depends on Delmas or signing another vet (Bethea, Stevie Brown etc). Delmas/vet and Quin would and should start.

CB people talk about Round 2 Titus, Round 2 Broyles. Well Round 2 Slay and Round 3 Bentley plus a good sized contract to Houston. Plus Mathis played well and we could get him back cheap (500k cap number last year). Houston has a better chance for 2014 success and to revert to 2010-2012 than Durham/Broyles(injury) do of having success.

The problem with Millen WR early was he missed. If he hit WR/WR, the Lions would have been somewhat better (plenty of other misses). Mayhew has some different circumstances(injury, unknown just how crazy Titus would be but I guess you could say that about Charlie Rogers for Millen) with Titus and Broyles but still if they were hits the Lions would be in great shape. But instead we still need two WRs. So keep taking picks until you hit a Calvin. 4th time was the charm for him, this would be Mayhew's 4th time with WRS in Rounds 2-3.

When Houston plays worse next year, it will be pretty easy for me to tell you I told you so. Time to move on from him. When a player comes in that has zero playing time through 10 weeks, and suddenly the secondary is not giving up huge gains and not getting torched for tds it should show you that the corner that was on the field didn't deserve a starting job. There's your sign... Jonte Green is a better cb than Chris Houston is.
Chris Houston ranked 94th in the league among cbs in quarterback rating allowed, and was scored the lowest on the Lions roster in pass coverage. Fuck em

Ravens game (there were some solid gainers in that game on Green in first half but a good second half), Giants game no Cruz and Vikings game (Houston didn't get beat against Vikings either) and also Green didn't play that game. It was Mathis and Greenwood.

I'd enjoy seeing Jonte cover AJ Green or Antonio Brown or Josh Gordon. I'm sure it's the sam as Marlon Brown and Reuben Randle.

WR 2 and WR 3 are the most pressing needs. Houston,Slay,Bentley, don't need a CB really.

The Lions were at the bottom of the league in passing defense. You have said that the Lions have a top 5 front 7. That tells me that the secondary sucks!!! WR 3 can be found anywhere....not necessary in the 2nd round. Get a cheap FA for the #3.

I'm with you on drafting 2 WRs in early rounds, just not rounds 1 and 2. 2nd and 3rd would be ideal imo. I wouldn't mind Gilbert or Dennard being the Lions 1st round draft pick. Having Gilbert/Dennard, Slay and Bentley all starting, and Houston, Green, and Greenwood as depth would be great. God forbid the Lions actually get a coverage sack from time to time.

I honestly can't wait to see what the new coaching staff thinks of Houston and Delmas when training camp begins. Delmas' ass is going to be gone, Houston hopefully follows him out the door. Changes in the roster shouldve been made during mid season last year, but due to the ineptitude of the Lions staff they werent. Do you guys honestly think Chris Houston would've remained a starter under a better coaching staff last year? His struggles were easy to see, and imo he would've been riding the bench, and him starting next season would have to be earned, not an automatic like it feels to be the case right now. He was outplayed by every corner on the roster last year, and people(LKP) are acting like he is a shoo in for the number 1 corner spot next year.

I definitely want Houston to earn it, but I do feel like he is currently a favorite to start at one of the 2 CB spots. That's based on his experience and pretty good years before 2013. Although, if Slay mans one CB spot and someone outplays Houston, I'm all for letting him be a backup. But based on the new contract we recently gave him, it doesn't make any sense to cut him until at least after 2014. I think his 2014 cap hit is around 4 or 5 million. So hopefully he played poorly in 2013 because of injuries and he can bounce back in 2014.

Anybody against trading him? I'm just thinking along the lines of, if younger players are out playing him, why not sucker another team into him? Hopefully another team would see it like you and LKP see it. Just a down year because of injuries, but clearly has some left in the tank. I see him as a corner pushing 30, whos lost a step, that has become expendable, due to the talent that is already on the roster or could soon be. Think the Lions made a mistake resigning him, but after the last 2 good years, signing him looked like a must.

agree too many other needs although the value will be there for that position throughout the first 3 days. Id draft one in one of the first 3 rounds than grab a burner on the outside like DHB in FA.

Josh Huff round 3 or 4. Sorry for trying to sell this kid to you guys, I just like how versatile this kid is. If he has a clone that's projected to go in the later rounds I'd be fine with that too. Just can't think of any off the top of my head. Watched alot of Oregon games this year, so maybe I'm a bit biased

Tom I'm going to look up all the first round cbs drafted over the past few years and their first or first two year impacts, you'll be suprised.

That's one of the reasons drafting one. If it takes time for a CB get one early so maybe by 2016?

Plus, I always see wide outs drafted after round 1 & 2 who do well.

Well at least I know why they don't get coverage sacks. Fucking religion.

Always see or just remember the ones who do well and forget the failures who never see the field.
