Game 2: Lions @ Giants *Monday Night* Thread

I hate to say it......because it sounds so weird......but we might have one of the best 5 secondaries in football.

Denver
Giants
New England
Seattle
Detroit????

I wouldn't go that far yet. Facing a fading Palmer and Manning doesn't say much imo

Hayden is the only guy in our secondary that I don't like seeing on the field. Tabor has got to step up and take his spot.

I've thought that exact same thing for 2 weeks.

I wonder why he's not in there yet? I won't question it much because we're playing so well.

Being in the media-inane NY-NJ region, the supposed top 5 SB contender 0-2 Giants' pratfall vs the Lions on MNF with a national-global audience, is gonna send them into a sharklike feeding frenzy...until/if they win a few games. Thats pretty fucking awesome in itself as an added bonus in beating them.

New York Giants star wideout Odell Beckham wound up playing after all. But it didn't matter.

Not against this defense.

Ezekiel Ansah sacked Giants quarterback Eli Manning three times, Detroit finished with five overall and Tahir Whitehead picked off a pass in a convincing 24-10 win Monday night against the overmatched Giants.

Detroit is now 2-0 for the first time since 2011, and returns home next week for an intriguing showdown against the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons.

The Lions had lost all three of their previous Week 2 games under Jim Caldwell, and five in a row overall. But they got a fabulous all-around performance to pull this one out, including an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown from Jamal Agnew to help seal it in the fourth.

Outside of a Giants touchdown drive that made it 7-7, New York managed just 2 yards -- yes, 2 -- in the entire first half.

A good defense was led by its best player, with Ezekiel Ansah finally breaking loose -- and doing so convincingly, racking up three sacks and a fumble. That's more sacks than he had all last season. Haloti Ngata and Jarrad Davis also chipped in sacks, bringing Detroit's total to five for the day. The Lions now have six through two games, after managing just 26 all last season.

Stafford's final line: 15 of 21 passing for 122 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 117.6. He's had better days, to be sure, but that was more than enough on a day when the defense and special teams shined. That's maybe the biggest difference about this team through two games -- Stafford doesn't have to play perfect for Detroit to win. And if that remains the case, this team is going to be tough to beat in the NFC North.

Jamal Agnew chased down a deep punt and caught the ball at his shoe topes, then turned on the burners, spun out of a tackle and hosed the thing for a brillilant 88-yard touchdown. It was the fifth-longest punt return in team history, and the first by a rookie for a touchdown since Eddie Drummond in 2002.

Matt Prater, who has now made all nine field-goal attempts of at least 50 yards since the start of last season. That includes a 56-yarder near the end of the first half against New York where the ball took a big hop off the cross bar and then caromed inside the left upright. It was the 38th field goal of at last 50 yards in his career, which is sixth most in NFL history, and he's hit four from 55 yards since joining Detroit. That's a new team record. (Yes, more than Jason Hanson.)

Detroit also lost two defensive players in linebacker Jarrad Davis (concussion evaluation) and safety Tavon Wilson (shoulder). The loss of Wilson wasn't a big deal because Miles Killebrew plays so much as a third safety anyway, but the Davis deal is far more concerning. The rookie played every snap last week, and even though he's far from a finished product, he was the club's leading tackler and recovered a fumble against Arizona. In New York, he dropped Eli Manning with a suplex for his first career sack. Detroit replaced Davis by moving Tahir Whitehead back to middle linebacker and then inserting rookie Jalen Reeves-Maybin on the weak side.

Lions G T.J. Lang: "We know not a lot of people on the outside really believe in us, or put their trust in us, but we don't care about that. We don't pay attention to it. We block out the noise and play for each other, and we're playing our asses off right now."

Lang: "We read a lot of stuff. We see a lot of stuff that's out there in the media. We don't buy into it. We know what kind of team we have, and obviously know that we have to earn that - we have to earn the right for people to call us a good football team. I think we got a hell of a team."

Lions CB Darius Slay on making two key stops on the defense's final series: "I mean, that's what I do. I make plays. That's what they pay me to do."

Slay on the pass rush: "We just kept hitting him, and we knew he was going to feel us."

Slay on whether he or Jamal Agnew is the fastest player on the team: "That's no question. What kind of question is that? I'm the fastest. You know what I'm saying? There's no doubt about it. He can be second, third, whatever he wants to be. But he'll never be first until I'm 50."

Lions WR Marvin Jones, on the defense: "They made a huge statement. Like, we're the No. 1 defense in the league statement. And it's fun to watch. You rarely see anybody sitting down on the sideline when the defense is up, just because they've been playing lights out.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell on whether he hesitated to challenge a spot on fourth down: "No. I was standing right in front of it, so it was pretty, pretty simple. And obviously the confirmation from upstairs, and looking at the film, it was pretty obvious."

Caldwell on Stafford's mobility: "I think that's just a trait that he's probably had since he was in junior high, maybe. I didn't see him play in junior high, but he did some i college and he's done it ever since he's been in the league here."

Lions QB Matthew Stafford on his roll outs: "It's not something I practice. It's not something I think about. It just happens. It worked a couple times tonight. It has not worked a couple of times in my career."

Stafford on returning home to face Atlanta 2-0: "It will be nice. I hope our fans come out and make it really tough on them on offense. It's a big-time opponent, a really good football team, a perennially really good football team. We will have our work cut out for is."

Giants TE Evan Engram, on getting flagged for grabbing his crotch during a touchdown celebration: "I guess I accidentally touched something, but it was nothing intentional."

Giants coach Ben McAdoo, on what happened when New York was flagged for delay of game on fourth-and-goal: "Sloppy quarterback play. Quarterback and center need to be on the same page there. We need to get the ball snapped."

Giants S Landon Collins, on where New York's urgency level is at: "The urgency is over 200. Over that." (No word on what scale he was using.)

Lions had more rushing yards (138) than passing yards (122) as they started started 2-0 for the first time since 2011.

In the first quarter, Stafford escaped a sack and weaved his way between defenders for a 13-yard gain on third-and-9 to keep a drive alive. Three plays later, he found Marvin Jones for a 27-yard touchdown pass, Jones? second touchdown in as many games

On the Lions' second touchdown, Stafford used his feet to buy time in the backfield. He stepped up in the face of pressure and hit Eric Ebron streaking across the end zone.

Tahir Whitehead also intercepted a deflected pass off Glover Quin?s hands, and Quandre Diggs made perhaps the play of the game when he stopped Shane Vareen just short of the first-down marker on fourth-and-3 with just over 10 minutes to play.

Ebron finished with a game-high five catches for 42 yards for the Lions, who managed just 257 yards of offense as a team but once again took advantage of good field position.

The Lions scored their first touchdown on their second possession, which started at their own 46-yard line after a Haloti Ngata sack pinned the Giants near their own goal line.

Limiting the Giants to just 80 total yards in the first half and 62 rushing yards for the game. They also racked up five sacks ? three by Ezekiel Ansah ? and eight tackles for loss. And Tahir Whitehead?s interception didn?t simply erase Matthew Stafford?s lone turnover of the game ? a fumble on a third-down sack in Giants territory. It also gave the Lions offense a short field to set up the go-ahead score midway through the second quarter.

?Our defense was nails tonight,? Stafford said.

Abdullah had 86 yards rushing on 17 carries. Theo Riddick had 20 yards on nine carries. Matthew Stafford had 23 yards on three carries.

New punter Jeff Locke pinned the Giants inside the 20 yard line on three of his five punts.

Darius Slay Earns honorable mention for shadowing Odell Beckham Jr, and limiting him to 36 yards.

Webvideo Highlights from the Lions win over the giants.

After two weeks they?ve racked up six sacks and forced five turnovers.

The Lions still have some problems that need to be fixed?namely penalties and Greg Robinson. But this team still looks like a team that can beat the Falcons on Sunday, and who knows after that? The sky is the limit when you play like this.

Stock Up
Ameer Abdullah, RB - Abdullah didn?t have a great day overall running the ball, but considering the matchup against the Giants DL, he performed well above expectations.
Miles Killebrew, SS - Deserving of his own write up, Miles Killebrew played like a man possessed. He?s a monster in the making.
Jarrad Davis, LB - It sucks that he left with injury, because Jarrad Davis was playing spectacularly all game. He notched a sack and was the spirit of the D when on the field.
Quandre Diggs, CB - When the team needed someone to come up big in the fourth quarter, Diggs was there to prevent a fourth-down conversion and kill the Giants? comeback hopes.
Graham Glasgow, OG - I don?t want to jinx it, because I have to rewatch to be sure, but I think this might have been, dare I say it, a good game for Glasgow?
Marvin Jones, WR - Jones caught his second touchdown on the season, and it was a beauty. He was shut out the rest of the game, which was concerning, but he?s still a threat to defenses.
Jeff Locke, P - Sam Martin needs to get healthy sooner than later, but Jeff Locke looked good in his first action as a Lion.
Haloti Ngata, DT - ?Get rid of Ngata! He?s old! He?s overpaid! Etc.? Put on this game, then repeat those silly phrases out loud to hear some grade A comedy.
Matt Prater, K - Prater wasn?t content to simply set the record for most 55+ yard kicks in Lions history, he had to do so by doinking it off the uprights and in.
Darius Slay, CB - I got a little worried when Slay had a bad couple of plays on the Giants field goal drive, but he was money until the final snap from then on.
Matthew Stafford, QB - After being disrespected by NFL Network in their clutch poll, the talk was all about how Stafford couldn?t beat teams in prime time. Suck it.
Rick Wagner, OT - Wagner, like Lang, has had issues with penalties. He was great as a blocker, including springing Abdullah for the longest run of the night.
Cornelius Washington, DE - Washington has done well for the Lions, even if no real production has come out of it yet.

Stock Down
Kenny Golladay, WR - Golladay excited fantasy owners everywhere in Week 1, but was nearly shut down against New York. It helped that the team was able to find more favorable matchups elsewhere.
D.J. Hayden, CB - Hayden was red hot in the preseason, but has been pretty awful the regular season.
TJ Jones, WR - You?d be forgiven if you didn?t realize TJ Jones was activated this week.
T.J. Lang, OG - Penalties. Not going to get those favorable holding non calls for Detroit.
Nevin Lawson, CB - I don?t know why Lawson is in a time share at outside corner with D.J. Hayden, though I have a working theory. It?s not a good look, though.
Golden Tate, WR - Tate, like Ebron, disappeared in the second half. Also like Ebron, some of that was nursing the lead, but disappointed he didn?t do more.
Dwayne Washington, RB - Washington lost his job as a returner, then left the game injured after one decent run and little else. He may be inactive next week.
Tavon Wilson, SS - Wilson started the game well, but fizzled as the game went on. He?s being outplayed by Miles Killebrew right now and may not be starting for long, especially if his shoulder injury is serious.
Paul Worrilow, LB - Worrilow has been one of the lowest-ranked linebackers for years and it?s mostly due to his coverage. We got to see some of that.
Anthony Zettel, DE - With as much hype as there was around Zettel coming into this one, he didn?t do much at all. Nothing stood out poorly, but little positively either.

Coaches
Jim Caldwell, Head Coach, Stock Up
It?s hard to ding Caldwell for many things in this game from a playcalling perspective. He won a spot challenge and kept his team cool and collected once they started to put some points on the board. We?re getting to the point where we might start talking extension, but there continues to be some odd personnel decisions that make you scratch your head. Having Washington, rather than the far superior Theo Riddick, as third down back wasn?t just odd, it was downright criminal. Still, the team came out on top and Caldwell is a legitimate reason why that is so.

Jim Bob Cooter, Offensive Coordinator, Stock Down
Cooter?s ability to draw up dynamic passing plays and exploit defensive mismatches has evolved since last season. What has not is his inability to do anything creative with the run game, and it predictably floundered until late in the fourth quarter.

Like his previous outings, he failed to maximize the players who were winning their matchups, as evidenced by the complete lack of targets for Ebron and Tate in the second half and failure to exploit the Giants? weak centerfield defenders.

He isn?t used to playing with a lead, and the Lions? lack of a supportive run game was obvious the moment the team took the lead. Cooter needs to improve, which is why his stock is down for me, but that doesn?t mean he hasn?t done wonders to keep this offense moving despite those flaws. It?s like seeing a player come out strong as a rookie but never quite get past that ?good rookie? stage.

Teryl Austin, Defensive Coordinator, Stock Up
Teryl Austin not being hired as a head coach for multiple offseasons confuses me to no end. The guy has been able to work magic in multiple ways for years, and he continues to do so here. He had a couple blunders, such as calling a LB blitz in the red zone with Evan Engram clearly poised to go up the seam, and later he would give up a massive cushion to Odell Beckham Jr. on thirrd down, but his overall playcalling and forceful execution of his will on the Giants offense was spectacular.

Joe Marciano, Special Teams Coordinator, Stock Up
Rather than phasing Washington out completely (like I would have wished, but that?s another story), Marciano had him share the returner spot with Agnew before Agnew stole that spot and made it his own. He was able to get Jeff Locke into a serviceable position in less than a week, and there were no major special teams breakdowns. And only minor breakdowns at all, with the unit mostly functioning as well as it could have.

Didn't know that the former Packer TJ Lang was from Royal Oak. He and I might be related...distantly.

Odell's curly blond top locks look silly w/that short black hair underneath, and full beard, its like Trump's plug-weave...an alien parasite munching into his brain.

Great team win. All phases and finished well.

This defense needs to keep it going. Hopefully Wilson and Davis injuries aren't too bad.

Ansah is a bad bad man. I told you the 17 less sacks was due to that injury

And Agnew. Great pick by Quinn. Many more returns in the future. Stay sure handed

The Jarred Davis injury will hurt more than most realize. As good as Slay and Ziggy are and as good as Killa is becoming......Davis, IMO, is the heart and soul of the D already. Him missing any time hurts......a lot!

OBJ should be fined heavily for that "block". It directly led to his injury. Fuck you, Beckham.

Yeah why isn't it being talked about ? That hit by OBJ on Davis was so illegal it wasn't funny but then the Giants were hitting lions in the back all night becaue they knew these criminal refs would not call it .

Late hit on Stafford, "hold" by Lang on the Abdullah screen late in first half, missed block in back by Beckham to hurt Davis. Lions still overcame. Such a good well rounded team.

Bring on the Falcons

Had you told me that Staff would have less than a 150 yds and a fumble I would have said we lost. I still think the fumble was an incomplete pass. The defense has issues at times but they have stepped up when they needed to. We are 2-0 and have yet to play a great game. In years past we would be 0-2 after games like that.

It may be just me but I get the feeling that Stafford is more comfortable with the offense and the players around him than he has ever been. I do think the new contract and the twins may play a role in that as well. He is comfortable and content in life and its showing on the field.

Also you have to give props to Bob Quinn. He really has turned the talent level of the team around and has it playing better than I have seen the Lions play in a long time. He still has a long way to go but I do love what I have seen so far.

Agree on the fumble but it was close. Lions defense rose up and got a pick right after that anyway

Lions had 6 drives start in opponents territory all of last year. They have five already now. It makes a huge difference in what Stafford has to do. Still finishes with TDs. Stafford had 4 pass attempts in second half. Great team win. Rushing did enough at 4.3 YPC with some timely long runs plus Stafford scrambles. Stafford did his part for sure but got good team support.

I could watch that Agnew TD all day too

I'm still pissed about the refs last night. Shits just so old. Blocks in the back that extend plays, and blocks in the back that are right around where the tackle is made. Inexcusable, and one of them resulted in our 1st round pick getting a concussion. Caldwell needs to throw a fucking tantrum on plays like this.

Plus for the first time ever Stafford was willing to have outside help. He always laughed at the idea, thinking he didn't need it. He has certainly matured the past couple years and it's showing in his play.

Was curious so looked it up...the last time we won back to back games by more than double digits was 2014 when we beat the Bears 34-17 on Thanksgiving and then had 10 days to prepare for the Bucs and won that game 34-17 as well.

I agree . I wish I was the billionaire owner of the lions . I would so go off on the nfl after last night. This shit gets so old where one team is blatantly getting away with shit on the lions and the NFL does nothing because it's one of thier protected teams . Now we may have lost our #1 draft pick because of a dirty freaking play.
