Detroit Tigers Team Notes

The Rangers are not the best team in the AL, but probably the third best. This does not mean such "power rankings" will translate directly to the postseason. One pitcher in a five-game series can change everything. Ask Tampa Bay. It's why no one will want to see Justin Verlander in a five-game series against the Tigers. The team that plays the Tigers is down 0-2 before the series starts.

No pitcher in the majors has won 20 games prior to the end of August since Curt Schilling did so in 2002.

No American League pitcher has accomplished the feat since Roger Clemens did it in 1997.

No Tigers pitcher has picked up his 20th win this early since Mickey Lolich won his 20th in the 131st game of the 1972 season. The game Saturday was the 132nd for the Tigers.

First time 8 hits allowed since late May.
Making his 29th start, Verlander was the first pitcher to record 20 wins before the end of August since Curt Schilling did so in 2002 with the D-backs. Verlander is the fifth pitcher to reach the 20-win mark in August over the past 20 years, joining Roger Clemens (1997), John Smoltz ('96) and Jack McDowell ('93).

Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Verlander is 11-1 against division opponents and is the biggest reason the Tigers started the day with a 6-game lead over Cleveland.

Final line for Verlander: 6IP, 8H, 4ER, 3BB/6K...he has perhaps as many as six starts left this season...depending on how race plays out...

7-8-9 hitters had hit .150 against Verlander this year...today, Hughes, Repko and Butera went a combined 5-8 with 2HR, a double and 4RBI.

Tigers are now 7-1 at Target Field this year (5 Wins in Minnesota last 2 seasons combined), 5-1 on road trip, and 18-9 in last 27 road games.

Pavano started for Twins today...gave up 5ER in 6.2IP...Twins starters have a 7.80ERA in 14Games Started vs. Tigers this year, 4Runs+ in 12 of 14Games.

One amazing Verlander stat from his 20th win: It was the first time in his 194-start career that he gave up a 4-run lead.

More on Verlander: He has pitched into the seventh inning in 17 of last 18 starts. One reason he wins: Doesn't let middle relievers in game.

With his 41st consecutive save, Jose Valverde is now tied for fourth on the all-time list in what was also his 500 appearance.
