Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

Detroit Tigers? GM candidate profile: Matt Slater. Slater is also reportedly ?under heavy consideration? to be the next GM of the Detroit Tigers.
MCBTB

According to a report from Lynn Henning of The Detroit News, there are three names that are believed to be ?under heavy consideration? to be the next general manager of the Detroit Tigers. Yesterday, we went over Josh Byrnes. Today, we?ll be going over a lesser known name in Cardinals director of player personnel Matt Slater.

Slater, also under listed under the title of special assistant to the GM, player procurement, has held the position since 2012. He works with Cardinals GM Mike Girsch (and presumably with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak) in all aspects of player acquisition, both at the major league and minor league level. He also helps with contract negotiations.

Before joining the Cardinals, Slater, 51, also held baseball operations and scouting positions with the Dodgers, Orioles and Brewers. He?s been with the Cardinals since 2007, as has Mozeliak. They?ve worked together for 15 years, so they must have good rapport with one another.

Ranking the top disappointments from the 2022 Tigers:

1- All of the injuries from the starting pitchers. Probably the most shocking thing I have ever seen.

2- Tork's inability to hit FBs. I am reasonably confident he will fix it... but until he does... AAA is too high a level.

3- Akil Baddoo - He has gone from a dynamic force to a WTF in one season. Gotta think his future is in doubt.

4- Meadows injuries - no blame, but it is sad to see.

5- Baez - would be higher, but hey, we had the scouting reports.

6- Candelario - he went from a decent MLB 3b to unplayable.... again, in one season.

7 - Schoop - See Candelario, but with much better defense but fewer homers.

8- Barnhart - Was expecting a bit more defensively... the .539 OPS is .150 below last year.

9 - Hinch - this team never adjusted, and on most nights, they appeared dead

There are some positives, but most occurred in the minors (Meadows, Perez, Keith, etc., taking major steps forward in development). As a whole, it has been just a dreadful year.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:

Yesterday, I wrote about each of the positional spots and how they may be filled for the 2023 season. If you need a refresher, here it is:
https://totallytigers.wordpress.com/2022/09/12/positional-puzzles/

Chris Ilitch is currently searching for a new GM. It is expected that the rebuild ? and the pace of it ? will be a primary topic of discussion with all candidates.

We know that Ilitch was very unhappy this year and pointed to ?no progress at the MLB level? as the main reason for firing Al Avila.

Statistics also show that the fan base starts disappearing permanently at year #5 of a rebuild and it takes seasons to get them back ? if ever. The Tigers are currently in year #7.

But Chris also shelled out over $243 mill on free agents alone this past year and got nothing in return. How likely is it that he will open his wallet that much again for a new GM?

The Tigers are strongest in their pitching, despite a large number of injured pitchers. Some of them will miss next year. But their bullpen remains strong.

The biggest concern is with their lineup ? the 8 defensive positions and their offense. Only 1 player currently is guaranteed to remain in his same position next year.

The new GM is going to have to make a decision about the team?s goals for 2023.

There is a possibility that he will have to backtrack on the current rebuild plan and commit to some strategic, but limited, tearing down of the roster.

He could also focus on ?rebooting? the team in which a number of players and contracts are moved while moderately upgrading any new trades or signings.

The last option involves a significant upgrade to the roster that includes more owner investment in the lineup and potentially some important trades (possibly involving some top young talent) that would visibly boost competitiveness.

Which option do you believe is most likely to happen?
Which plan do you believe the new GM is most likely to pursue?

1. A step back into a limited rebuild.

2. "Rebooting" in which there is further roster editing and moderate additions.

3. Significant roster upgrades with intent to be competitive.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

This week, we?ve been analyzing the Tigers? roster as it pertains to positional players. This roster has been so ineffective ? in fact, they regressed this year ? despite a massive influx of cash from the owner.

Chris Ilitch has expressed his unhappiness with his now former GM?s inability to improve the team. It stands to reason that he will ask his new GM to move this team forward at both the minor and major league levels.

Thus, it is expected that the new GM will be making some major changes to the current roster including off-loading some contracts (if possible), non-tendering and trading players.

Here?s where it gets fun. You are now the new GM and have to remake this roster. Who are the top 5 players you would keep?

You can only pick positional players, not pitchers, for this exercise. You can also select someone who is a DH. Those on the IL can also qualify. But everyone has to be a member of the current 40-man roster.

And if you can?t come up with 5, that?s OK, too. You will be making a statement.

Experts and insiders react to the Detroit Tigers hiring Scott Harris.

Harris has worked with the Cubs as an assistant GM for Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer in Chicago, and most recently under Farhan Zaidi in San Francisco, so he?s worked with some pretty big names in the baseball world.

The fact that Harris is the president of baseball operations and not the GM could suggest that a GM is still coming, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The important thing is that Harris will be leading the charge.
Many experts and insiders have reacted to the hiring, to pretty much universal praise. This piece will highlight some of those reactions.
