Webvideo BYBTB Podcast 92: Talking A.J. Hinch with Cody Stavenhagen of the Athletic Detroit. 66 minutes.
The Tigers appear set to make the former Astros skipper their 39th manager in team history.

What wizardry was this? Certain that the White Sox would hire the former Astros skipper, we didn’t really allow ourselves to hope this would happen. Now, as we record on the evening of Thursday, October 29th, A.J. Hinch appears to be a lock to become the 49th manager in Detroit Tigers franchise history. For this episode we’re fortunate to be joined the Tigers beat writer for the Athletic Detroit, Cody Stavenhagen.

Topics under consideration will include the following...

-White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf goes old-school, does it his way.

-A.J. Hinch is coming to Detroit (we’re 99 percent sure).

-We’ll explore how Hinch can overcome his damaged reputation, what the Tigers needed to know before they hire him, and why he feels like such a perfect, and necessary, fit for the Tigers.

-We’ll preview what promises to be a slow moving offseason market.

-Finally we’ll talk a bit of instructional league ball why the Tigers farm system and player development staff need to have a big year.

Quote from Al about the hiring.

"We had a pretty good knowledge of AJ, of who he was," Avila said. "There was never a doubt in my mind of his character, honesty -- he's one of the better guys that you're going to meet in the game, or in life in general. One mistake does not determine a man.''

This just shows how clueless Al really is. Why would you talk about his character when the only reason he is available to be hired is because of his lack of character. He should have talked about his ability to manage and his baseball mind...not his freaking character. What a dope.

I'm assuming the same people that have issues with this hiring also have issues with Miggy since he's a far greater piece of shit.

Agre, Avila is a clown, I don’t care for this hiring either rose still banned for life, hinch caught cheating land new job a year or so later. We live in a freakin clown world

The reason they always gave about Rose banned "Integrity of the game." Isn't this the same?

Hinch, himself, did not cheat. What he didn't do, was to prevent his players from cheating after he knew about. The second part is what got him suspended. He even went as far as to wreck the monitor on at least two occasions. However, he admitted that he did not stop the practice or explicitly let it be known that he disapproved of it.

Not even in the same hemisphere to what Rose did.

Also, as long as Hinch is allowed to choose his coaching staff, and Jim Leyland cronies are not part of it, I am okay with the hire. No more Legendry Lloyd please. If it is hiring Hinch, without the ability to pick his own staff, then this is a hollow pick.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers readers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.
Today we center the discussion on the hiring of A.J. Hinch as the Tigers? next manager.
As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

On Friday, the Detroit Tigers signed former Houston Astros manager, A.J. Hinch, to become their next skipper. Hinch was fired a year ago for his role in the Astros cheating scandal in which he failed to do enough to stop the coaches and players from cheating. There is no evidence that Hinch himself cheated.
Unlike his former GM, Jeff Luhnow, Hinch took full responsibility for his actions and expressed his regret over the scandal. He did discuss it during the press conference with the Tigers.
Friday?s events certainly beg a question for Tiger fans. Please participate in the survey for the purpose of sharing your reaction to the hiring.

How do you, Tiger fan, feel about the signing of A.J. Hinch as manager?
1. Love it!

2. It?s a solid signing.

3. Gives me some hope.

4. I?m conflicted.

5. Not sure.

6. Horrible signing.

they are not only in the same hemisphere, they are on the same city street.

Hinch, being the manager, condoned the cheating by not putting an end to it. He had ultimate power to stop it and didn't. He directly impacted the outcome of games, and it could be argued, a WS championship.

Rose bet on games, which is against the rules. Betting on games outside of the Reds games has no impact on anything except if he had inside information, which only cheated the bookies. If he bet on the Reds, it's about equal to a manager allowing his players to cheat.

IMO, what Hinch did was worse.

That said, I don't have a huge problem with either. Both should have taken their lumps and be allowed back in baseball.

How many MLB managers and executives in the 90s and 00s were aware that their players were using HGH? All of them. What did they do about it? Nothing.

So I accept the Hinch hiring and hope for the best.

There are Hall of Fame managers and other managers who knew their players:
1. Corked bats
2. Threw spitters
3. Used pine tar to their advantaged
4. cheated in some style against MLB rules

Stealing signs has been part of baseball for 100 years or so. There is not specific rule against stealing signs. What happened in this case was the technology employed. That was the violation. Every MLB is trying to steal the other team's signs. How they do it and whether they get caught at stake here. Certainly, HOU had an undue advantage. There are players who are always trying to cheat. If we hold every manager accountable for every one of their players who cheated or bent the rules, there would not be any Hall Of Fame eligible managers.

I'm saying that I think all of those things are equal to someone gambling.
