You guys are going to destroy are post-apoctoliptic group before we even have a chance. At least do it over something important, like a new "beastly" recruit or couches on porches.

I'm staying in N. Carolina for at least the 1st year anyway. What's the point of going to a farmers' market for all these years if not to build a rapport with all the local farmers in preparation for post-apocalyptic survival.

All valid points with respect to the comma.

Nice humour and colour on the topic too.

My stepdad once 'threatened' to move us to St John's Newfoundland when we were up in TC. I would have run away from home had he tried to pull that shit.

Funny you say that. My neighbor and I have been kicking this subject around for 3 weeks now. At least since the Preppers show started airing on NatGeo. Unless you are in a big city or an extremely dangerous area, the best thing would be to stay put.

Also the best investment a person could make, if you were truly preparing for something like this would be a HAM radio. Of course out side of you basic needs and protection.

HAM radio in a Faraday cage. That way you can talk to the other preppers after the massive solar flare or EMP wipes out our unprotected electronics.

because you would've been farther away from Tebow???

Hmmm... looks pretty simple to build one. it's a simply enough concept. I might fool around with that myself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage

I remember basic high school physics about being protected from static electricity (i.e. lightening) simply by standing in a giant birdcage

Not really interested in HAM radio though. Like, going so far as getting a license. My dad was into that. HAM radio has a huge stigma attached to it in our family.

The Immacualte Conception of the Chosen One would not take place for a full 2yrs at the time Bart was making such threats and talking about living in fucking Newfoundland.

I'm in the city... what are you supposed to do then? Do I just have to hope I can emerge "king of the hill"?

hydroponics.

I can't find it now, but there's a set up I've seen that allows you to grow plants to eat, and feed tilapia with. I think they sell them for around $10K (fish & plants not included)

so, within a fairly small area, you can provide meat and carbs for yourself.

Of course, running a generator to fuel it & providing fuel attracts attention... which is where the problem of being in an urban area is more severe

Stockpile+secrecy until you can get out safely. Water would be an issue, who wants to stockpile that?

Maybe the best survival option is to be armed to the teeth and ruthless.

But the Faraday cage would block all incoming and outgoing radio signals though. Better hope you have the radio back in the cage when the flare and the EMP finally hit!

Exactly. You have to store your post-apocalypse electronic in the cage, and then take them out of the cage to use them.

Seems like you might be able to build some sort of buffer circuit to an antenna outside the cage if you wanted to.

A friend of a friend has a company in NYC called "Urban Gardens" or something like that and what he does is renovate warehouses in Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc and turn them into Hydroponic farns. He then sells the "fresh, local produce" to area restaurants and markets. Apparently it is a newer but growing business.

Hydroponics is not new. There are a ton of farms out there that specialize in this. Maybe doing it in NYC, but they get fresh produce from all over. The company I was working for sold a ton of commodity stuff up that way.

I set up a small plant growing station when I was in high school. We used a small tray with dense foam to hold the seeds. You run the filter discharge into the pan and let the water drain out. We had a few bass and a bluegill in the tank. The lettuce grew great, until the weekend when a rock clogged the water pump. Tank ran low and the fish died, but for 2 weeks it worked.
