2022 Off-Season

Lol your solution at every position is a rookie!

Thats why you go out and get all those draft picks, right?! lol. They are the cheapest option youre going to get and to your point we've already invested enough in that group that hasnt even caught a ball yet (ie Cephus, Chark, Reynolds).

Rookie safety next to Walker isnt a terrible solution. The Will Harris experiment should be over.

Rookie depth at WR with #1 upside is what that unit needs. Chark on 1 year prove it deal should merely be a Cephus #4 camp battle. St Brown and Reynolds should see the field a majority of snaps. The rookie works his way into the line up. Gives a potential guy like Jameson Williams time to recover.

For sure, hopefully we can use them correctly. We still need some proven vets on both sides of the ball. That?s something this team was missing last year and hasn?t addressed so far. I?m still holding out a little hope that we make a splash with a fist bumping signing.

PFF FA Grades so far

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2022-nfl-free-agency-live-deal-grader#DET

DETROIT LIONS
S Tracy Walker: Three years, $25 million ($17 million guaranteed)
If Walker?s PFF grading profile over the course of his NFL career was viewed in reverse, this contract would look likely be seen as a steal. After earning an 82.5 overall grade across his first two years in the league, that mark has fallen to 57.1 over the past two years. He?s been at his best in coverage when operating from deep alignments as the free safety. The worst season of his career came in 2020 when he was asked to play closer to the line of scrimmage.

With holes across the roster, Detroit opted to lock in one of its more productive defensive backs across the past several seasons. The team could still stand to add some more quality depth at safety in the coming weeks.

Grade: Average

WR D.J. Chark Jr.: One year, $10 million fully guaranteed (up to $12 million)
Chark missed the majority of the 2021 season with a fractured ankle, but there should be no long-term concerns, and he?ll still be just 25 years old in Week 1 of the 2022 season. Chark earned a career-best 75.8 receiving grade in his sophomore 2019 season, going over 1,000 receiving yards with just two drops on 114 targets.

The LSU product is every bit of 6-foot-4 and ran a 4.34-second 40-yard dash, a true big-bodied burner on the outside. He has skills that simply cannot be taught. The Lions did very well here to get him on a one-year flier, providing a huge boost to their offense. And now Chark can also play his way into a substantial multi-year deal next offseason.

Grade: Above average

Edge Charles Harris: Two years, $14 million
Harris put together a rewarding contract-year breakout for Detroit last season, earning a 78.7 PFF pass-rushing grade on 871 defensive snaps. It was the first time he cleared 500 defensive snaps in a season, and his 52 quarterback pressures were more than he recorded in his previous three seasons combined.

That kind of jump tends to be dangerous when it comes to contract extensions from the team?s perspective, but this looks to be a reasonable deal for Detroit. Harris can get to the quarterback from wide alignments, and the Lions aren?t exactly flush with pass-rushing options as of now.

Grade: Above average

Not likely on the "splash" signing. Not really anyone left that would fit that bill that the Lions would be interested in or vice versa.

Myles Jack could do that, though. I would really like to see that happen. Fits what we're looking for in terms of athleticism but didn't make any big plays last year (could be in large part because of the Jags terrible coaching). Not sure what his asking price would be but it shouldn't be THAT big.

The other options I would say "wow" to would be Derek Barnett, Donte Jackson or Darious Williams. None of which I have heard any rumors connecting them to the Lions.

I think this is going to be another year of under the radar signings, grading rookies and young players and then next year hitting the market with more talent and deeper pockets.

Not saying this year will be another 3 win year.....just not going to go out and swing for the fences in FA.

Bobby Wagner and the Honey Badger. Those are a couple players that I?d like to see us target.

Bobby Wagner coming to Detroit. LOL. There is no way you think that actually has a chance of happening.

And if Wagner is a 0.0% chance.......Honey Badger is a 0.1%.

Be realistic.

Only a 4 million cap hit for Chark with the void years. 6 million dead next year

Lions have a little more to spend if they want.

so, how does it work? It only counts $4m this year and $6M next regardless?

Void years for a 8 million signing bonus over 3 years

But yes 4 million this year, 6 next year but he only plays this year

They did it with Tyrell Williams last year too I think

It's essentially a 2 year deal to spread the cap hit over 2 seasons with the intention that everyone involved knows it "VOIDS" after the first year.

Most teams do it now.

Lions still have 20.4 million in cap space. Will need money for draft picks and top 53 and IR/PS but in good spot. Can make 2 or so more signings if they want

Wouldn't mind a vet DE/DT for the rotation or another vet safety that can play in the box more than Walker. Maybe a vet CB at the right price too as Okudah insurance

Otherwise roll the space over into 2023

Resigned David Blough

Reeves Mabin to Houston

Thats a bottom 5 QB room.

Goff was 17th in QB rating though and much better with Ben Johnson/Campbell and Reynolds/St Brown second half. We'll see if they draft one or not, signing Blough and Boyle cheap doesn't hinder them from doing so

With the moves so far, I doubt we?re looking at anything beyond maybe a 6/7 rounder to compete with Blough. Don?t really have an issue with that, I?m no Goff fan but this is probably the one year to pass on QB.

Yep no clear cut good starters or any elite QB prospects. And the field hasn't separated at all. One or two of them will probably end up being good but who knows which ones

Stafford comes back to Detroit after 2022 and leads the Lions to their first Super Bowl win!!!

LOL

Logan Ryan was just released. If we made a run at a veteran presence on the D id love a guy like him next to Walker.
