Abolish high school football

He has a point. Until we have a better grip on the long term effects of CTE, I think there's a serious age of consent issue here. Should a parent have the authority to sign a consent form to risk mental disability in their children's middle to old age?

Well football did a number on me at ages 10. Not my head but a real serious snap of the right femur in 1970.17 weeks later I did 4th grade again. I still played jv and junior year and looking back with only 15 jv players and all of us playing both ways. Not a good idea. Wr on offense ,and 130 pound nose guard on defense. Opps that was a mistake raising my hand and wanting to play NG. Dumb. My back hates me
Still for it.

Maybe little kids should not play at all. Maybe 6th, 7th, kids play flag football.
8th they start in tackle ?

Did anyone who didn't go onto play football in college and then the NFL ever end up suffering CTE from high school football?

At your age lots of people's backs get fucked up, history of football or not.

I certainly wouldn't let my kid play today if I could help it.. Back in the 70's the neighborhood kids and I use to play tackle football on the cemented streets.. Diving all over the place. It was awesome but not very bright.

Hockey, lacrosse, soccer, skiing ...all risk CTE as well

IF diagnosed concussions correlate well with CTE (seems like they should, but I don't think it's proven), then in particular, there's an issue with girl's soccer, but right now, CTE rates across all sports aren't well understood and require more study.

I don't think there are any old people yet that grew up in the current environment of year-round traveling football teams. Kids are getting a lot more exposure now.

I coached 3rd grade flag and will be coaching 4th/5th again this spring (we won the title last year at 6-0-1) and we coaches had to complete an hour long, web-based tutorial on concussion protocol ...the rules around what you have to do when it's even remotely possible a kid got his/her "bell rung" are very strict and precautionary and a good idea.

I got knocked out in 2nd grade and was just taken home by my buddy's mom and like a few have said, used to play tackle football as kids in the yard with no helmets or pads, etc

I lived in Ohio through most of 2nd grade and every kid in the neighborhood had full pads (helmet and shoulder pads at least, but most had padded football pants as well) from about 1st grade on. Our pick up games were nuts. We would play with 1st through about middle school. When we moved to Michigan I remember thinking it was really strange that nobody had their own pads. I doubt that is still happening today, even in Ohio.

Our town just recently started the USA Football program for Kindergarten and up - they're very serious about injury prevention in general and concussion prevention in particular. They've revamped the way they train on fundamentals including blocking and hitting - although as a first grader, it will be a few years before my kids is exposed to that. Kids still smack heads accidentally or fall and hit their heads so all the coaches have to take a class on concussion protocol. The program is run by a guy who played tackle at Penn State and he says it's way better than what was around when we were kids.
