Andrew Luck is retiring

The difference was that Barry had not had the injury history of (bad) Luck, the Lions had not won a playoff game since early in Sanders career, (the Colts have played in 2 SBs prior to Luck going 1-1) he was closing in on the NFL all-time rushing record, and the Lions had a coach who Barry disliked, b/c he didn't let him do as he pleased, unlike Fontes, such as missing mandatory OTAs and training camps.

I know many were upset because we couldn't get a RB replacement in the draft because he retired after the draft. I suspect many Colt fans are thinking the same. No chance for 1st round QB or maybe OL for the new QB etc.. Though with Sanders he said he was thinking all off season so he waiting a long while. With Luck, it was probably just to see if he could do it one last time.

Fandom brings out the worst in people sometimes. If a player can?t honestly commit to the game then he shouldn?t be playing. I?m sure those same fans would have no problem with a guy who doesn?t want to play the game and plays anyway, and that?s terrible.

If Migwell Cabrera and especially Jordan Zimmerbum up and retired, there wouldn't be very many angry fans, as if say the former did last season soon after being out for the rest of it. But of course individual players on MLB and NHL teams don't hold as much individual value as those who play on NBA teams and in key NFL positions.

But they both stink. All depends on how good someone is.

Dunno about next years's draft, but it s/b much better for first round QB selections, than the last relatively poor one was, also taking into consideration the Colts draft slot. Now that Luck is out of the picture the Colts could and probably will go 8-8 or worse this season, giving them a better shot @ a better QB pick (unless of course they trade for or sign a FA).

Wonder if they would have went after Teddy Bridgewater, who turned down the Phins to remain a backup @Saints?

Unlike the Lions with Barry and Calvin, the Colts are letting Luck keep his money.

Another reason the Lions are a joke of an organization.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27460243/sources-colts-recoup-money-luck

Barry should have figured out much sooner that the shit owner WCF, GM, and Lions brass were never gonna build a good enough team with an elite or near elite QB around him while he was with them, and not signed his last contract, waiting for FA.

That's on HIM.

Same with Megatron, if he didn't think that the franchise was committed to building a SB contender..well..he had his chance to leave earlier.

I was talking about how the Colts let Luck keep his money compared to the Lions being petty and pissing off two of the best players in Lion's history.

The organization is a joke.

I don't see anything wrong with asking for the money back. They retired early they should give it back.

It?s not like it impacts the cap. If it?s just going straight back into the owner?s pocket then I?m fine with the player keeping it. Besides, a HoF level player probably made the franchise magnitudes more money than he ever got paid. Fighting over money with one of the franchise?s all-time greats (and cash cow) just looks bad.

Why is it the owners who are bad and not the players. Take it back and give it to charity or use the money and get tickets for people that can't afford them themselves. And the Lions aren't the only ones doing it. And stadiums are generally full weather Calvin plays or not.

The owners aren't putting their bodies on the line, they don't have to worry about being crippled or suffering debilitating brain trauma from one too many hits. The cap also benefits the owners so it's not like they took some big risk and need the money back.

The players are more than capable of giving to charity and helping out the community too, and many of them do, so I don't understand why it makes a difference who has the money, yet the franchise wants the money back? for what?

Also a player of Calvin's caliber does make a difference. The days of blackouts weren't too long ago, Calvin helped put butts in the seats and sold many jerseys, not just a local icon but a national one too. A player like that brings in fans for life (those poor unfortunate souls).

But the owners paid them a ton from money which they get from fans. And like anything they don't have to play the game. Calvin didn't put butts in the seats. Since 2011 the attendance has basically been the same. With him and without him. As far as us, DSF, we're watching when Calvin played and after he left we're still watching. I'll give you the merchandise sales.. but with most sports we watch because of the team not the players.

Certainly not downplaying his significance but when Verlander was traded we still watch and go to games, when Yzerman retired we continue to watch and go to games. People watch more based on if the team is good or not.

I'm not trying to be a dickhead here but imo if someone was paid a certain amount to play and retired early the money should be returned. I don't suspect others to agree here.

But that?s what I was getting at, a star brings in fans and and their loyalty even after said star is gone. There?s a lot that you can?t put a price tag on that players like CJ do for a franchise.

It?s not common practice for teams to ask for prorated bonuses back from retiring star players, probably because the money is irrelevant and they don?t want to risk ruining that relationship, but for whatever reason the Lions decided to be shitty about it.

Players probably think that the Lions treat their players like shit (see Barry & CJ) and the Colts do right by their players (Luck)

Something like that may influence free agent signings.

If they recoup the signing bonus prorated portion back from Luck that would go back to the Cap space. The Colts could have gotten around 12 million back in cap space if they went after the signing bonus money.

Yeah I was wrong on that after looking into it further. The team has the option and can choose whether to exercise it or not. It?s matter of how it?s prorated even if it appears to be all guaranteed. I still think it?s weird for a team to say ?hey here?s all this money for signing a new contract? and then ask for the remaining prorated portion back outside of extreme cap scenarios. In CJs case the Lions were asking for something piddly (~$1 million), I don?t see how the negative press is even worth that.

Ya, treated like shit alright lol. Backed the fucking Brinks truck up and dumped a boatload of money in their laps. How awful lol.

Imagine being so rich you're like....yeah, go ahead and just keep that 25 million...just as a thank you even though you never lead us to a super bowl.
