About half the schools responded to CNN's request for test scores. They say they'll update when they get responses from their appeals. For the most part, the Big Ten didn't respond. They probably should. I bet they'd put everyone else to shame. Wisconsin is the only Big Ten school that did send data and while I haven't checked every school, Wisconsin is by far the best I've seen with only 1% of the football players reading at less than a college level.

edit: correction 2% at Wisconsin. Still. Good job.

Edit: I'm a moron. That was 22 football players between 2007 and 2012.

Though, this should start some discussion...

"According to collegedata.com, the average incoming freshman at UGA scored a 1,243 on the SAT verbal and 28 on the ACT.

The average athlete playing football or basketball scored a 941 on the SAT, or 18.75 on the ACT."

18.75 on the ACT? I am calling BS on this.

some real gems among the excuses:

"According to Clemson, some students who took the ACT first, later took the SAT to meet the university's requirement for having a writing sample, and therefore "did not try very hard" on the SAT when they took it. In those cases, a student was only counted if they scored below the threshold on both the SAT and the ACT."
"The Ohio State University's Student Athlete Support Services Office uses the Wide Ranging Achievement Tests (WRAT) as a way to determine the best possible individualized academic plan."
Wonder what "plan" most of the geniuses on their football team ended up in...

UWashington:
"We know how to close the achievement gap," he said. "It's just very expensive. I believe we're investing in that."
LOL. "I believe we're investing in that" like "No I don't know for sure, but it sounds like something we'd do."

They should put posters like this up around the locker room:

In a follow up report, the NCAA recommends university faculty keep Billy Madison away from student athletes when they're trying to learn to read.

I'm not sure how much the test has changed over the years, but they're saying 16 is college literate. With an average of 18.75, many fall under that bar.

...or were you saying that 18.75 is too low? You think it's BS because you expect higher or lower?

Maybe student athletes need to meet the same admission requirements as the normal students. Of course this would add to the SEC dominance. The BIG 10 would be inferior to the MAC.

The woman that did the study is getting death threats (which she expected) and UNC says they don't believe the story.

A Jan. 7 CNN story quoted a source who claimed that a former UNC basketball player was
unable to read or write.
We do not believe that claim and find it patently unfair to the many student-athletes who have
worked hard in the classroom and on the court and represented our University with distinction.

I thought the SAT scores looked ok. Not good by any means. Then I remembered they bumped a perfect score up to 2400 from 1600. Scores are pretty sad.

get ready for it!!!!

ohio's scores have been released.

they've got guys on their team who can already read at a THIRD GRADE level! That's grade three of elementary school. Impressive!

Me play football for university of ohio state. Me do good. Me beat that team up west like coach says. Coach introduce me to man in shiny suit who give me shiny things. Shiny!

the math scores are pretty stupid too.

how can you not multiple and divide at the second grade level in college? WTF?

It's all about the lower level teachers in HS and lower. That's where it starts and because they can play a sport teachers push them along. For multiplication and division, being lazy and bad elementary teachers I believe, maybe even a parent who doesn't take an interest at the early levels. You don't learn at that age, it's harder to learn as you get older.

I don't lol at these kids I feel bad for them.

come on... yeah, I'd feel bad for Mongo, the gentle giant who would otherwise be tending to his pet rabbits on the farm, but by virtue of his size was pushed into athletics, and given passing grades without any effort to cheat or influence the teacher on his part. But I think a lot of these guys consciously made the choice to ignore school, cheat, and whine to their coaches about any teachers threatening to hold them accountable for it, and I don't feel sorry for them.

The kids aren't all blameless. But I doubt in 2nd grade when you learn to multiple they were whining to there coaches. But later on even if they did I feel bad they got pushed through because a coach went to a teacher and they decided football or basketball etc is more important.

There are of course situations where some kids are more difficult, big and strong and threaten said teacher. That's why they need to make these kids score higher on these tests. Otherwise, why should the next kid want to learn if he knows he can get a scholarship without trying..

Come on Michigan. Release the scores. The Leaders and Best would release test scores that show it to be true.

A guy I went to HS with (who sadly passed away from cancer a couple months ago) was a National Merit Scholar and scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT.

He got junk mail from lesser schools congratulating him on his score of 800 ....

Yeah, it was 800 on Math and another 800 on the Reading.

like ohio?

His English (aka "reading" to simpler people) and math scores must've been off the charts for them. They probably thought he was from outer space, or a traveler from the future.

He was the partner at Sidley-Austin I knew from HS debate ...smart as hell but very, very intense.

I think it was someone else on the debate team who sent in a bunch of business reply cards to various colleges - John Carroll University, etc.

don't throw stones. I'm sure there are a ton of idiots on the UM football team as well.
