Austin already lining up interviews

Hope he stays in Detroit for at least 1 more year. He could at least lay the groundwork for the Lions transformation to a 3-4.
 
If I was a owner, taking this defense to among the tops in the league .. I'd be all over Austin.
 
The Lions need to promote him to Asst Head Coach/Def Coord so he doesn't make a lateral move to another team.
 
I would be highly surprised if this amounted to anything just yet.

This is his first year as a D-Coordinator on a team with three first round picks on it's starting line, high round picks in both the linebackers and secondary (Van Noy, Slay, Levy), and some quality free agents like Quinn and Ihedigbo.

No GM would be confident, YET, that the Lions Defense is the product of superior coaching, or the product of high round talent, regardless of injuries.

The article makes note of his name being turned is an "one of the tree top minority candidates"... which means he's this year's Rooney Rule victim. He's going to be interviewed primarily because he's black, which is a serious injustice to him.

Now, if Suh leaves, Fairley Leaves, Tulloch is cut, blah blah blah... and this team is STILL top 5 in D next year... buh bye Austin. He's going to have offers pouring in, and for all the right reasons this time.

A lot of injuries this year, man. Austin still made it work. Everybody seemed like they were plug and play ready. Before Austin got here that was not the case. We'd lose 1 starter and the team would be devastated. Maybe it has more to do with finally having solid depth, but maybe not.
 
A ton of good names out there this year for possible vacant HC jobs. Hopefully TA stays.

And that's a valid argument, as are the injuries Detroit fought through.

However, when you add the sum of all parts, you find that Detroit was ranked 1st in rushing yards allowed, but 13th in passing yard allowed. Austin was a DB coach previously, so you would think the passing defense would be better, and he wouldn't have had such a dramatic impact on the rushing defense.

He hasn't proven after only one season that it's his coaching and not just a great D-line at play with those numbers being what they are.

We all see Austin as an amazing D-Coordinator, because he turned this defense right around... but are we really sure Gunther wasn't just a terrible coach that was wrecking a very talented defense? Was this defense always capable of this, and being ruined by horrible calls by their coordinator?

My point is, Austin is certainly a capable coordinator at worst, and a superstar at best, but it's really difficult to judge after only one season with this team, which is what put him on the radar for a head coaching spot.

I don't think he'll be hired away this year, nor do I think he makes a lateral move. If he keeps the needle moving in the right direction one more season though, we may be on the hunt for another coordinator right quick and in a hurry, because someone will snatch him up.

Right now I think he's a victim of this joke Rooney Rule bullshit.
 
It would be depressing to see him leave after only one year. He's damn near the only good thing we got going besides Caldwell. For a team with little historical success to get a coordinator plucked so soon because he did so much for that type of team is downright unfair. Let this dude establish a good thing in Detroit first NFL. He's gonna leave eventually if he keeps up the play of this defense anyway.

I agree. If I were a GM I certainly wouldn't be seriously thinking about hiring a first time defensive coordinator that inherited an underperforming unit the previous year. And I don't necessarily agree with the Rooney Rule. There may be some bias in that area but I'm of the belief that your performance speaks for you, that and those types of people are in the minority anyway.

I absolutely hate the Rooney Rule because it was implemented to promote diversity, and has done the exact opposite in creating token interviews rather than serious ones.

When the Giants brought in a middle school football coach, who was black, just to say they complied with the rule, or the Cardinals brought in a Mexican accountant who had never coached football at any level, but did work in the team's front office, it's become a slap in the face to qualified minority candidates rather than the opportunity it was intended to be.
 
Sometimes you get the guy you can, Ink. I have no idea if he'll be a good HC or even a consistent good DC. But I think for teams who have an opening sometimes its better to go with the unknown than a retread.

I agree, Rooney Rule for all it's intentions hasn't worked out.

Agreed, but the NFL is full of guys with a better resume who had good years too.

Look at Linehan as one example. He's resurrected his career doing for Romo what Wisenhunt did for Rivers, and he has head coaching experience.

Stands to reason teams will take the experience over a 1 year track record every time.

If you really want a guy with no experience as a head coach, how about Dan Quinn in Seattle, who has put together the #1 defense in the league in consecutive years?

Why not a couple of retreads with winning records as a head coach. Rex Ryan and Gary Kubiak come to mind.

Ass in Josh McDaniels and Todd Bowles, as well as Mike Sherman and the possibility of Rob Ryan and there are a lot of candidates I can see who will interview better or have a better record to sell to fans.

And that is without considering any college coaches or a guy like Trestman or Marrone... neither of whom made any sense to me when they were hired two years ago.

All of those names for what... 5-6 jobs at most?
 
I'll give you the guy in Seattle, but as far the rest..

Some teams like unknowns..so I think someone could like Austin very much. And being a possible out of playoffs Sunday while Seattle is still in..
 
Sometimes you hire a guy maybe not thinking he'd be a good HC now but in the future.

"He's drawn Mike Tomlin comparisons". If true and key people in charge of organizations think Austin has those intangible leadership qualities on the level of Tomlin he has a good chance of landing a job. Hell I want him as our HC.

I think he certainly deserves those comparisons too. And I am betting we lose him to an HC opening somewhere.

Just not this year.
 
He's been a GREAT defensive coordinator for us this year. With that said, I'd take it as a compliment to lose him to a HC position. That says a lot about the current coach you have when people start targeting your staff.


Caldwell has done a hell of a job as well. The difference is he hasn't got the props and recognition he's deserved. He's coached this team at an elite level this season and that's one of the big reasons we have a game this upcoming Sunday. Should be talked about as a COY for the job he's done.
