I think Caldwell saying that the Lions could field a competitive team even with franchising Suh shows their intent. Losing him would be catastrophic, and they all know it.
And franchising him would be asinine. Either a long-term deal is done before the beginning of the new NFL year or they need to let him walk. If you think Suh has Mayhew by the balls now (which he does), then how bad would it be if he franchises him for $27MM?
If I were Suh I would welcome that franchise tag. $27M guaranteed for one year then hit FA. Perfect!

Shows how little you know about football. Players despise the franchise tag...
Usually because it is equal or below fair market value.
Or injury risk. One twist or tweak and your career is buhbye.
Suh's never been injured. I'd gamble on an injury for 27 mil. Unless he gets decapitated he'd still make bank as a FA anyways.
Means absolute jack shit that he's never been injured. There's always a risk. He's still young, but now he's on his second potential contract. Long term, stability and job security is what these guys crave the most.
He's going to get like $65M guaranteed. He's getting $27 guaranteed in one year. Like I said worth the gamble.
