Avril Franchised

He also said, earlier in the year, that he wouldn't use the tag. And now he has.

Sure, they want to reduce his salary. I never said he was fine with it. But Mayhew isn't gonna panic/overpay just to save a few million. He's too smart for that. He'll find a way to fit it if he has to.

he had to tag him...or he walked with nothing in return.
Look, I get everything you're saying. Keeping Avril's $10.6 is not good. But I fail to see how overpaying Avril to save money is better than just moving someone else's salary to save money.

Tagging him is not good option. Sure. But overpaying and pushing most of it into the future is better? Explain how.

I could careless about the future....he's tagged...lol....he counts for 10.6 million on the 2012 cap as soon as he signs it....that in itself is a stupid number , it's why they didnt want to tag him.

MM knows they'll have a hard time signing the rest of their own guys with Avril now tagged....Avril now has him over a barrell , thats the part you don't get.

with Cliff tagged , Tulloch is most likely gone....MM was hoping Avril would cave and not wanna take a chance on playing on the tag...Cliff and his agent didn't bite.
I get this. But all Mayhew has to do is move Stafford's salary, or Suh's salary, or reup CJ, and all that leverage is gone.

Also, Avril has a small window. Once FA hits and players start to sign, that cap space gets less valuable.

1 good thing is Avrils agent has woked out longterm deals with other clients ( David Harris , Tamba Hali and D'qwell Jackson ) with either a tag in place or a tag looming.

hopefully they can get something done by next week.

everything I read on twitter from Lions beat reporters suggest the Lions have moved onto CJ now though.

If Avril isn't signed in the next week or so, its gonna drag out.

I dont think so...I think he finds a taker in F.A

be up to the Lions on the compensation though....can't see anyone giving up two 1sts for him.

That's the problem. I can't see anyone giving up more than a 2nd, and I don't think Mayhew will take it. So it drags on.

You never know, though. Maybe someone offers a 1st, or maybe Mayhew takes a 2nd. We'll see. I hope he gets dealt, honestly.

Honestly he would be worth a mid to late first. A double digit sack guy already developed entering the prime of his career. A team looking to win might be willing to throw a first at him. If not then a high second.

Id love the patriots 27th pick. Avril would be perfect for their hybrid 3-4 sometimes 4-3 defense. And yes i know thats not usually the patriots way but theres already rumors they may make a run at mario williams (dont know if he was franchised today) and they may see Avril as a cheaper option.

get Jerry Jones on the phone, maybe we can get another Roy Williams type deal.......

Didn't they use up two on Carson Palmer?

There are a number of teams that could use a player that can pressure the QB like Avril. Look, when it comes down to it, the kid gets to the QB, and that is a very important skill these days. The only reason we don't love him more is because we already have other great players on the D-line. The only draftable DE I see that looks like a better than 50-50 bet of being better than Avril is Coples.

Teams can't just pick up a 10+ sack artist and QB pressure machine (Avril has really had a tremendous season in pressures, FF, and turnovers) anywhere. Anyone looking at Upshaw, Perry, Mercilus, or Branch in the first round would get a much better guarantee of strong production from Avril. And certainly a number of teams have the cap space to take on even a 10 million contract.

I wouldnt blink to replace avril and his 10.6 million with upshaw, Ingram or Mercilus....done deal....where do i sign?

Does the $10.6 million put the Lions over the cap right now? I've seen different numbers. They're allowed to be over until March 13, so if they ARE over, Mayhew needs to restructure someone or lock up Avril soon.

CJ will be restructured by weeks end.

Talk about leverage...CJ has about as much as I've ever seen a player have. Mayhew is gonna have to pay up there...

real close, within 1-2 mill either way. NetRat has it around $10 Mill and he is usually pretty close
