burke testing nba waters now..

Really? Is that why March Madness is one of the most popular and thrilling tournaments in all of sports? College hoops is just fine. No matter how bad Michigan will miss Burke, and how bad other teams will miss their star freshman, someone will always come along to replace them, sooner or later. Yes, I do wish that kids had to stay at least 2 years, but it is what it is, and college basketball is still a great sport.

It's still a great sport (though not as great as it used to be, how could it be with all the attrition each year) but there's absolutely no denying that it's harder to care about players and teams when the best players are gone before you know it.

I'm not denying its harder to care about the players, but to say "college basketball is dying" is a huge stretch. It could be better, like all sports, but it's still very popular.

Dying is a stretch, but I don't think declining is.

I said One and Done is killing college hoops, not that its dead. And "March Madness" has nothing to do with quality basketball teams, it is all about office pools, last second shots going in and guys trips to Vegas. My opinion is my opinion but I would take the mid-80's era over today's any time. Georgetown, St Johns, UNC, KU ... all with players and teams you could identify and follow, like or hate.

One and done makes recruiting difficult, loyalty a challenge and has eroded the talent level at both the NCAA and NBA level.

Of course this my opinion and not something others have to agree with, nor something I have to justify or prove.

I'd say that comment qualifies for rubber room status. It honestly might be the dumbest comment of the entire basketball season.

I took it out of context and he does qualify it a little bit, but there's no excuse for those words leaving your mouth.

main reason I don't follow basketball and why I dislike basketball. One and done is killing college hoops.

I agree. I wish there was a 3 year min. I think it would be better for all involved.

Yeah, baseball rules would be awesome. Free to go pro out of high school, but if you don't, you're locked out of the draft for 3 years.

This would be perfect. If you leave early and don't get drafted, have fun in Europe or China.

From mgoblog....

On Trey Burke. A couple of good sources have passed along information about Michigan's hot topics du jour.

This should not be a scenario like Harris or Morris where the player leaves for dim draft prospects. In Harris's case he wanted out no matter what; Morris had people in his inner circle pushing him into the draft.

Burke is not either of those guys. If the NBA does not tell him he is a first round lock, he'll be back. Since that doesn't seem in the cards—name the last one-and-done under six feet tall—Michigan should avoid the terrifying prospect of entering next year with no point guard at all.

We know you're praying for it. Kind of sad really.

My OPINION on Michigan's odds of retaining Trey Burke....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

has changed.

Heading into the weekend, based on what I was hearing at that time, I believed that it was more likely than not that he'd return. Nothing definite, mind you, but reason to be optimistic.

I believe the pendulum has now shifted. Maybe Trey's feelings have been consistent and its the feelings of those around him or on Michigan's side of the ledger that have changed? Either way, my current opinion is that he is most likely headed to the draft.

This is NOT a report or a statement of fact... and nothing is definite or official until an announcement is made. Furthermore I don't presume to KNOW what he is going to do. With all of those qualifiers and caveats out of the way, let me reiterate that I'm only relaying the feelings of some that I know are close to the situation.

This is the definition of a fluid situation. Things could very easily change in the next minute and he could say he is coming back.... but right now I don't think outlook is very bright.

Will keep you posted.

Did anyone hear Steve Kerr on DPS or The Turd yesterday? While stuck on the 405 between the 101 & Wilshire Blvd for about an hour and flipping back and forth on the dial I caught him on both shows. Kerr, former player and GM, said precisely what I said about the 1-and-done trend in hoops .....it is ruining college hoops and diluting NBA talent and that kids who are completely unprepared mentally and physically are jumping Pro for the $$$.

He advocated a 3yr policy, citing the advantages of "team play" and maturing physically and mentally while still an amateur.

Clearly nothing will change and though the Tourney this year was average to below average, its not about the basketball, its about the brackets and office pools, so who cares anyways.

Kerr nailed it. This policy needs to be implemented. The NBA is a pile of shit compared to what it used to be in the 80s and 90s and it's directly because of all these unprepared players jumping to the league to early. You're right though, nothing will change. Why fix a problem? That wouldn't make sense.

So sad. The kid is not ready for the pros. And in two years, we will be asking the question, "What happened to Trey Burke?"

Yep. And maybe kids going to college for a few yrs will make teams less likely to draft some 19yr old from the Ukraine.

Why is everyone so angry at kids wanting to play in the NBA? Why shouldn't they get the chance? It's like people want to punish 18 year old kids if they make a mistake, how about helping these kids?

Here's what I would do, players can enter the NBA draft after high school, if they don't get picked they can still go to school at the college of their choice right away. Why punish these kids for checking out the "job market" before they go to college. Now after that I don't think there is anything wrong with the NCAA saying accepting a scholarship is a 3 year commitment and you can't come out until after your 3rd year. This wouldn't punish kids for pursuing their dream right after high school and would help the college game. I mean the one and dones kind of suck, but would anyone really want to see Kentucky return their whole team next year? Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist already look like NBA players toying with little boys, next year would be boring. Both of those guys would have been drafted out of high school in the 1st round.

A kid like Burke would be required to stay in college 3 years and it wouldn't be a stigma for players anymore that they stayed and scouts would be a little more patient with their evaluations of kids. Sullinger is a victim of the system, he stayed 1 year too long and his game is now being picked apart by NBA scouts, if it was a foregone conclusion that he was staying a 3rd year, he could work on his weaknesses before the scouts really even started to scrutinize him too much. Now he has no choice but to come out now, and he lost millions actually by staying that extra year. These kids have more at risk by staying too long than by leaving too early now. For every Marcus Taylor there is a Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers, or even Jared Sullnger who hurt themselves by staying a year too long.

As for Burke, how is he going to help his draft stock by staying another year? The NBA drafts on potential and 2nd team AA as a freshman indicates a lot of potential.

From UM Hoops:

The build up surrounding Trey Burke’s NBA draft stay-or-go decision swells by the day.

One premium site says Burke is staying. Another says he’s gone. Separate of those reports, we’ve heard strong rumors on both sides of the coin that we would be likely to believe if it weren’t for the vast amount of conflicting information. The Burke family continues to reiterate that they are still going through the process, gathering information to make the best decision for Trey.

Wading through every rumor is a chore and its going to carry on until a final decision is made. The NBA Draft rumor mill is particularly troubling because there is such a broad spectrum of parties and motives involved. College coaches, family members, agents, acquaintances and just about everyone else seems to have an opinion in a draft decision. They are also all fighting for very different things.

Point Guards Flood the Draft

Weber State’s Damian Lilard, Washington’s Tony Wroten, North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall and Texas’ J’Covan Brown are among a few of the undergraduate point guards that have declared for the NBA Draft in recent days. Add in combo prospects like CJ McCollum, BJ Young and Austin Rivers as well as guards that still have decisions to make such as Bradley Beal and Marquis Teague and suddenly a “weak” point guard class looks a whole lot more difficult. It remains to be seen where Trey Burke would rank among this group, but it’s clear that the group of guards continues to grow rapidly.

NBADraft.net on Trey Burke

Aran Smith of NBADraft.net took the time to provide some NBA-centric feedback on Trey – as things stand today. Smith projected that Burke is a “mid-second to undrafted player at this point”, noting that he hadn’t heard anything concrete from NBA circles regarding Burke’s decision. He added that Burke is “intriguing to scouts, but leaving this year would be rushing thing” and “despite the fact that it’s a weak point guard class, his stock is not high enough to make it a good decision”.

Smith mentioned Burke’s size as a major disadvantage to his draft stock – a problem that Burke can’t fix in the gym – but added that there was plenty of on court areas for Burke to improve including “advancing as a floor general while showing better vision and decision making”.

A Clarification on Timing & Deadlines

The dates and process surrounding the NBA Draft seems to change every year. Here’s the official timeline for the next month:

April 6th – NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee feedback released to players by this date (players must submit to the Committee by April 3rd).
April 10th – NCAA mandated date to withdraw from the NBA draft
April 29th – NBA early entry deadline to declare for the NBA draft
The “real” deadline is April 29th. Potential NBA players gain nothing by declaring for the draft before April 10th because they won’t have any opportunity to withdraw from the draft down the road.

What this means is that if Burke declares anytime after April 10th, his decision will be final but that he has no reason to declare before April 29th unless he is absolutely sure of his plans.

So he still hasn't heard back from the NBA draft board. Maybe they'll reinforce to the kid to keep his ass at school. Maybe I'm hoping against hope?
