According to McCosky, Teryl Austin as the DC is a done deal https://twitter.com/cmccosky/status/423644705918701568

Some background
He's been coaching since 1991, mostly as a DBs/Secondary coach aside from 2010 where he was the D-Co at Florida. Looks like him and Caldwell worked together at Penn St. and Wake Forest in the early 90s and they reunited in Baltimore the last two years.

"Source says #Lions front office hopes new HC Jim Caldwell keeps 3 assts - Jeremiah Washburn (OL), Kris Kocurek (DL) & John Bonamego (ST)"

I'll keep an eye to see if these "hopes" come true

If anyone stays it has to be Washburn, right? I thought the OL would be a weakness this year but they were the strength of the team. Plus, I know that Mayhew and Xander deserve credit for finding Waddle but you cant tell me that Washburn didn't have a huge part in Waddle's play this last season.

I always thought it was Gunther's. Not sure Shorts ran it in Tenn. so I don't think it was his.

Wide 9 was all Schwartz/Fischer

When Cunningham was in KC they were running the 3-4

Okay thanks. Maybe that's why the defense was off at times, we hired a 3-4 DC to run a 4-3.

Well Gunther didn't specifically run the 3-4 everywhere. The dinosaur has probably run every defensive scheme ever conceived in the history of football. I'm sure most D-Co's can adapt, sticking to a strict scheme is probably not a good idea.

Found an old article from '05 about KC's defense http://kan.scout.com/2/393649.html

True enough. I've always wanted the 3-4 for the flexibility. We might not have the right players but I'd be in for a hybrid.

So how does a team have #15 team in passing, #24 in rushing yet total defense is #10?

Talking college football. Boatload of teams. 15 and 24 could get you to 10 if someone is like 7 and 45.

my understanding is he is the godfather of the wide 9. Gunther used it here and when washburn got let go from philly we brought him in to help Gunther.

Yep. Washburn senior is a wide nine guy.

I don't know if effected the defense either way but I hope we get rid of it.
