Josh Slatger of MLive.com writes that if the Tigers decide to make a run at Cole Hamels, third base prospect Nick Castellanos could be the "golden ticket" to acquiring the Philadelphia ace. Castellanos is blocked with both Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder locked into Detroit long-term.

You know Nick Castellanos is a freakin stud, that goes w/o saying. I'm giddy @ the chance of him, cabby, princy, and maybe ajax is he continues to grow in say 2014. However we are all aware the talent that Cole Hamels possesses.

I'm am not sure if this is a good thing of not but if Fister rights his ship health wise, Verlander, & then adding Hamels. Goodness gracious we got ourselves a stretch run.

Very interesting thoughts indeed. I still think the team needs that other quality bat but @ 2B unless we can get something good, whats the pt? Corner OF there a few out there better then what we got. Gonna be plenty of rumors flying rnd about us but this one peaks my interest...

He is a FA after this season and the Tigers won't be in position to sign him at $20 million a year (which is what some think he will get). Nick is a steep price to pay for a 1/2 year rental.

Castellanos is 2-3 years away so things could change by then. He could be a LF right away or move one of the big guys to DH after Vmart is gone. IMO, Hamel's would be a one year rental. We can't trade our best positional prospect away for 1 year.

And I doubt Illich wants to be the NYY. Having 4 guys of 20m plus might be a bit much.

Yeah for a rental I say pass. if his contract had a year or two more then it would be worth it.. Nick is to good of a player and we should just move him to the outfield for now. He could go back to third when either Prince and Miguel become full time DH's after 2014 when Victor's contract expires.. Now if we could get more then one player in a package for him then maybe..

if we got anyone from the phillies, id want it to be pence.

I wouldn't mind Pence. OF with BA and Power, still under control for next year, Super Two.

He would be expensive as well I assume maybe not as much as Hamel's but still costly.

exactly, i figure if we're going to pay a lot for someone from the phillies it might as well be a player under contract for longer who fits a more important need for us right now.

Boy Pence would be nice...

How about Pence, Polonco, and Hamels..... Polonco has a buyout of 1 million in 2013 so him and Hamels would just be a rental. It would cost to much.. I know PP's numbers are way down at 273 /.317 /.353 /.670 But to get Hamels and pence would be something...

I agree 100% with you guys. I'd gladly give up Nick IF (huge IF) we could be assured (on his end and on ours) that we could re-sign Hamels. Doesn't seem too likely that would happen given our current contracts and the fact Philly couldn't lock him up. The same goes for Greinke. Nick C is just too much to give up for half year rentals for either with no further guarantee on re-signing for the future.

Also agree on Pence. He'd be great here. I'd love to get Polly back for a year or two to man 2B too.

Just my opinion...but Pence is highly overrated. He is 17th in UZR/150 for RFer since 2009 and 18th in Runs Created. At best, he would provide average production as a RFer. Granted, that would be a huge improvement over what we have been getting. Still, that would be a steep price.

Solve, corner outfield, 2B, and starter with one stop shopping, Victorino, Hamels, and Utley, as long as they signed new contracts with Tigers. Give them who they want from the farm. #notgonnahappen

I'd rather they trade for Zack Greinke. That said, I'd also hope that they would not give up a top prospect for half year rentals of either player.
