condolences, Republican posters

Well then, maybe somebody better tell Steve Mnuchin, ?cause I?m guessin? he has designs on the loot.

he may have designs on it and he may have legal authority to take it but that doesnt mean its legitimate. Its double taxation and its unconstitutional.

My understanding is that 1921, in New York Trust vs. Eisner, the Supreme Court ruled that estate taxes could be classified as ?excise taxes? and are permissible.

To my knowledge it?s the most recent decision in the matter.

Trump ran in 2016 on a platform of abolishing estate taxes, but instead, about doubled the exemption from either $5 million or $5.5 million to $11 million.

We?ll see when and if the constitutionality of the estate tax once again comes under the auspices of judicial review.

not the first time the supreme court has gotten something wrong.

Yes.

It would seem inconceivable that the Supreme Court has never gotten anything wrong.

For what it?s worth, because of this thread, my wife and I had a spirited discussion tonight regarding whether the 5th Amendment provision against double jeopardy does or does not affect a tax code that was not in effect at the time the Constitution was passed and ratified.

Unfortunately, the likelihood that either of us will ever be the beneficiary of an estate beyond the current exempt amount is imponderably low; even more imponderable, but less unfortunate, is the unlikeliness that we would ever be able to leave an estate of that amount to anyone.

ex post facto laws are unconstitutional in the US.

looks like the Libs should be happy. The Billionaire, 3 young girls that were born on third base & a friend of the Billionaire all died in the crash.
