I am not defending him.

On top of being sandbagged by the ghost of Mary Jo, for most of his career - instead of him MA could've had much better Democratic leadership in the Senate - he's dead.

He's basically been irrelevant for decades; I don't know why Republicans could never shut up about him. I guess when you're pushing policies that are bad for most of the electorate, it's good to have an easy, brainless retort to any substantive criticism.

The base of the Democratic party did care. It was because of Chappaquiddick surely that Kennedy was never able to get the Democratic Party nomination for President. Before Chappaquiddick Kennedy was a virtual lock to one day win the nomination.

Irrelevant to who? He was one of the most powerful figures in the Democratic party right up until he died. He was on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions until the day he died. His endorsement was always considered one of the most powerful of any democrat until he died.

Sorry, you don't get to dismiss his influence - he was a huge power player in the Dem party and he was also a drunk, a murderer and a dirty lying scumbag (basically, he was a Kennedy).
