Datsyuk leaving Red Wings for Russia after playoffs

Who put that into the CBA where a player leaves and they're stuck with a cap hit.

Didn't read the "family issue." Still sucks but hope things are okay. I'd think if it was serious he'd leave now..

If he has to go for family reasons, so be it. I have nothing but respect for the guy and everything he has done here. The cap hit isn't ideal, but is hardly an issue. The team has plenty of cap space coming up either way. This is the same as Pavel having a season ending injury, something we've already had concerns about the last few years.

Maybe it's not a big deal but it makes no sense. So if I guy retires there's still a cap hit? Just dumb.

One of my favorite players ever, as I'm sure it is with a lot of others. I totally understand his decision and respect it. I could not stand to be away from my family as long as he has, and he's provided the fans with so many lasting memories. It sucks about the cap hit, but no way will I blast the guy over that.

Hopefully there's one more fond memory he can leave us with in the playoffs!

Pavel has earned anyway he wants to retire? Wow 4 Hours For A ANKEL OPERATION DaMN ..I Did Nor Know It Was That Bad.

This is only the case if you sign a multi year contract after the age of 35.

Its a rule because previously teams had been abusing the contract system by signing older players to front loaded 10+ year contracts, in order to reduce the average annual cap hit, knowing full well that the player would retire long before his contract was up. When the new CBA took place they 'fixed' this by adding this rule.

Should bring his daughter here and the family. Wouldn't want to be in Russia for nothing.

Fair enough.

That being said - Datsyuk is/was my favorite NHL player of all time. I am very sad to hear this news...

Also - this sucks for next season...make no mistake this hurts the wings big time, eating $7.5mil next season is going to be a bitch - Holland will have to show everyone just how smart he really is...

Articles have even said Pavel is trying to help the Wings in any way he can to reduce or eliminate the cap hit next year. I love this guy, and can't muster up even a shred of animosity towards him even if nothing happens to that cap hit. He's leaving for the right reasons. He's given this team his entire AMAZING career.

I'm saddened to see Pavel go, but I'm happy for any move that makes him happier in life.

I agree he even said he should have done 1 year deals and this would not have happened. The dude is nothing but class. Hope he is a first ballot HOF. Because he should be..

You truly don't appreciate these guys until they are gone. I try my best not to take greatness for granted, but sometimes I did with Pavel. And now that he's likely gone, he's going to create a huge void. Typically, I hate seeing players get their banners raised unless they were all-time greats. Him and Z deserve to be up there.
