have you guys been following this? I don't know if there's any real significance in it, other than further underscoring how deeply hypocritical the impeachment attempt against Clinton was.

The area of Hastert's district in suburban Chicago is more or less the Bible Belt of the metro area. I remember having to mail something from a post office around there, and when I gave my address, the postal clerk started ranting about Chicago corruption and her taxes and what not. Always nice to see these holier than thou types shut up.

Hastert's alma mater, a small Christian college from that same area, yanked his name off their school of government as well.

The former SOTH Gasturd bought some land that turned out to be useless..that is..until he managed to pull strings and have freeway off/on ramps constructed that lead to it.

He apparently diddled one of his students while he was a wrestling coach @ a high school, and once he got elected into US congress the former student blackmailed him for his sexual molestation. Dumbass thought that he could get away with repeatedly withdrawing cash exceeding $10K, which of course, is required by his bank to report those transactions to the IRS, which led to an investigation, since Gasturd had withdrawn & paid ~$2M of the $3.5 total.

Ahh...these holier than thou art rightwing Christians believe that their Gawd and Bible place them above the laws of the US, and since most eventually repent and are forgiven for their sexual depravity, they believe that should not face or be prosecuted for any criminal charges.

There are only two members on DSF who know about what the term "going postal" really means, one of them is a mod and the other is myself.

You mean Kaline Country? He has said that he works for the post office.

So what does it really mean?

Its similar to what the Roman Catholic church did with its pedo priests. Instead of defrocking them and reporting them to the authorities, they shuffled them from parish to parish, which obviously never solved the problem, but swept it under the rug...for awhile.

The USPS was notorious for promoting people into positions of authority, who had zero people or management skills. The people in management who were gunned down by that man (whose name I can't recall) relentlessly harassed, insulted, and mistreated him until his more and more frequent absences from work, led to more and more discipline being taken until he was on the verge of termination.

His first victim was his supervisor, who had previously been transferred from a Post Office in Indiana, where his subordinates had managed to file enough grievances to force him out of their district. After these workers learned about this employee going postal on him, they actually had clapped and cheered for his murder.

I don't think it is as often that a belief in God and the Bible makes them believe they are above the Law, I think it's as often a sort of catharsis or confession and just hypocritical.

That is why the guy at work always cracking 'fag jokes' is probably gay himself, the minister decrying 'sinners' is himself snorting coke, blowing dudes and 'sinning' as well and why those charged with enforcing the law are often themselves just manipulating it.

Yeah.

I kinda hate to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure that everyone knows that that event - along with a few other similar events that happened near the same time - is the reason the term is part of the lexicon.

It's not like it was kept a secret or anything; those occurrences were reported in the news and stuff.

No it wasn't a secret, but some of the reasons behind why the shootings occurred to begin with were never made public. Made it seem like the killer went berserk for trivial reasons, when it was a very long buildup of tensions between them.

Both sides of the political aisle have corruption and criminals in office, but it is the GOP and esp. the Christian extremist rightwing who are always claiming to own the moral high road, while calling Democrats, liberals and progressives out for allegedly attempting to turn the US into the 21st century version of Sodom and Gomorrah...when it appears that much of their political party are all too often the ones getting caught with their pants down.

The amount of fundie cults like the Duggar clan belong to (Quiverfull), are endemic in the red-state South, and their treatment of women. children (as property), and anyone who is not of their religion, race, color or creed are like second-class citizens, if not sub-human. They have many followers and leaders entrenched in local and state government, as well as in law enforcement to help cover-up and sheild them from potential prosecution.

You aren't really telling me that most people who peruse that term online in forums and messageboards so flippantly, actually know exactly what incidents caused it & why it was coined?

All I have to do is read the posts from the resident buckeye and the welcher on this site to know that ain't always true.

I would say yes, I think people who are old enough to remember those instances happening understand that that's where the term came from.

I think the term is used to apply to describe anyone with a temper or who shows a sudden change in attitude .."blows up" at some news, etc.

Just the other day the oft-referenced "Dame fan" in our office said "if anyone would go postal and show up with a gun one day, it's Matt. Did you see how he reacted after someone had messed with the pictures on his desk?'

My first reaction was to say, "why was someone fucking with his personal workspace...? And how is sending an email to the team expressing his preference that others not touch his shit ...'going Postal?'"

Of course this is the same guy who says things like, "Ahh, must be my ADD kicking in today" when he forgets to follow through with something or talks about a woman on the team as being "totall bipolar" because some days she's in better moods than others.

I think the lay person thinks of "going postal" as someone "flying off the handle" rather impetuously, as opposed to having a long fuse and finally being pushed too far ...

just my impression

...

I vaguely remember reading some college admissions guide in the mid-90's that had a section about "terms college kids use today"; "going postal" was one of them, and the definition was something like that.

the other terms were stuff like "24/7" and "cool beans." I only ever heard really fucking annoying people use the latter.

maybe they are (or were) particularly bad about that, but it's not uncommon in the private sector generally. I've watched some pretty retarded (and often pathologically dishonest) people get promoted into the stratosphere. it seems to be a hallmark of a lazy manager that they consider it easier to promote head cases out of their hair, instead of disciplining them or shitcanning them.

in the private sector though, these sort of abuses are never seen as a reason to curb executive pay, corporate welfare handouts, tax breaks, etc. by the GOP like they are for the public sector.

In fairness to the guy though?bitches be crazy.

Lol ...when the only two women in our group weren't getting along, DameFan said ..."women can be caddy!"

The only two people he manages aren't getting along ...aren't talking to one another and he attributes his inability to manage to women in general b

I have no axe to grind vs my former employer, however soon after that infamous incident, the USPS in cooperation with the unions, implemented a nationwide temporary pilot program meant to attempt to minimize increasing friction between employees and management.

I volunteered to become one of their guinea pigs (sort of like being an NCO and put in charge of daily operations and employees w/o the abilty to "correct" and issue discipline). I demonstrated and proved to them that treating employees with dignity and respect could result in increased productivity and far fewer grievances. My co-workers had the ability to send feedback to management by voting every 3 months to retain or drop those of us involved in the program.

Apparently I did so well in the program, that one day our manager approached me on the workroom floor and told me that there were a couple of people from the USPS HQ in DC who wished to speak with me. I went into a meeting room and answered their questions. Then I was asked if I would be willing to become a floor supervisor. I declined b/c I wanted to see this program through its end and I knew that I was making significantly more money with OT than as supervisor.

But of course, several years later came the advent of email and eventually later broadband internet, which ended any need for OT, since first class mail volumes shrunk dramatically. I made the wrong decision, I suppose, but I became perma-disabled ~a dozen years later, so obviously it really doesn't matter now anyway.
