Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Fourth-round pick Miles Killebrew will have a chance to open the year as the Lions' starting strong safety.
Glover Quin is entrenched at free safety, but strong safety is up for grabs with Killebrew, Tavon Wilson and Rafael Bush all competing for snaps. GM Bob Quinn expects the Lions to play sub-packages about 70 percent of the time and Killebrew has the size and speed necessary to excel on passing downs. "Hopefully he can have a role covering tight ends," said Quinn. A physical player known for dishing out punishing hits, Killebrew was awarded first-team All-Big Sky honors in his senior season at Southern Utah.

Andre Caldwell's contract with the Lions is a one-year deal worth $885,000 in cash with a cap number of $600,000. Nothing was guaranteed on the deal and he has no bonuses attached. The money means he'll likely have to outplay multiple people to earn a roster spot. The Lions have more money and/or time tied up in five receivers (Marvin Jones, Golden Tate, Jeremy Kerley, TJ Jones and Corey Fuller).
