Asked Matt Patricia about his timeout strategy in the last minute against Kansas City, trying to understand why he used his stoppages when he did versus either using them earlier or forcing the Chiefs to use their timeout more strategically. Here was his explanation: "Some of it is strategic and there's reasons behind it I won't dive into too much, but there's probably a course there where they got into the low red, I'll say, where maybe only one of those situations maybe could have called a timeout a little bit quicker but really, whether you call it first-and-10 or second down situation, it doesn't really matter, you're trying to use them when you have to and save them when you need to knowing that you would have a couple plays on the other side of it if they did score, which they did, to try and use one to get us in a situation where we could throw something down the field. So certainly part of that is, is the ball in-bounds, is it out-of-bounds, is it complete or not? One of the situations in particular, I would have called a timeout but it was incomplete so that one saved us there on that situation.
And then really the one they scored on, that would have been another timeout situation there. So really only as far as our philosophy with that goes, probably only one other spot where we could have called it a little bit earlier but it just would have been a flip between a first down timeout versus a second down timeout." Q: Was there a consideration of not calling timeout and kind of take your chances and force Kansas City to use their last timeout more strategically? Patricia: "Yep, there's a lot of those situations, you know. Weren't quite there yet, but probably coming up in the next one or two plays if that had extended a little bit longer, that would have been the situation, try to put the pressure back on them to make those decisions, absolutely, yep."

Detroit Lions sending 3-man rushes more than any other team.
It?s an unpopular strategy, but it?s working fine thus far.
Ask any NFL fan what their least favorite defensive call is and you?ll likely hear one of two responses: prevent defense or a three-man rush. Oftentimes, those terms are interchangeable, but regardless, people hate it when their defense fails to send pass rushers.

But for the Detroit Lions, the three-man pass rush has been an essential part of their defense this year. According to ESPN?s Kevin Seifert, no team has run more three-man rush plays than the Lions, and it?s not particularly close.

?The Lions use three-man rushes more than any other NFL team, a total of 55 dropbacks this season, more than twice the next-highest team,? Seifert wrote on Monday.

Of course, with the Lions? talented secondary, they can afford to utilize that strategy more often. The Lions like to put six defensive backs on the field, and the results speak for themselves. They currently rank eighth in pass defense DVOA, sixth in passer rating allowed (80.3) and are allowing just 55.4 percent of passes to be completed (second best).

That being said, there are some obvious drawbacks, and we saw it in the final drive against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

?But on the winning drive, [Patrick Mahomes] completed 3-of-5 attempts for 33 yards against [three-man rushes] while also scrambling twice for a total of 16 yards,? Seifert wrote.

Will the Lions stick with this strategy as their defensive line gets healthier and (hopefully) more productive? Time will tell.

Sticking with the Lions? pass defense, they?ve been outstanding on third down:
