Lions signed CB Darius Slay to a four-year, $50.2 million extension through 2020. The deal contains $23 million fully guaranteed at signing. A sort of late bloomer who emerged as a legitimate shutdown corner last season, Slay should get more opportunities to shadow enemy No. 1 receivers this year. He finished 2015 as Pro Football Focus' No. 2-rated cornerback behind only Tyrann Mathieu, shining both in coverage and run support.

Lions placed WLB DeAndre Levy on the active/NFI list.
Levy is still recovering from last year's hip surgery. Despite Levy's absence?he watched Friday's practice in a baseball cap and hoodie?coach Jim Caldwell is still convinced Levy will have a major role on defense this year. "We just kind of want to be careful with him and just make certain he?s ready to go," said Caldwell. "At this point in time we want to be a little bit prudent in terms of how we deal with it."

Lions team president Rod Wood said he can't comment on color rush jerseys yet. Anticipates announcement closer to the regular season.

The Lions placed Don Carey and DeAndre Levy on the Non-Football Injury list on Friday, moments before the start of camp.

The Lions will have four Bill Walsh minority coaching interns in camp: Steve Fifita (Idaho State DL), Darren Garrigan (Texas A&M Commerce DB), Sherrone Moore (Central Michigan TE) and Anthony Parker (Norfolk State OL).

RED ZONE SUCCESS MIGHT BE A GOOD SIGN.
The Lions' offense was much better in the red zone last year than elsewhere on the field. While that is unlikely to happen again, it might lead to improvement, per Bill Barnwell.

In his first practice with the Detroit Lions, Anquan Boldin got a lot of work with the No. 1 offense. Most of it came in the slot with Golden Tate and Marvin Jones outside. He also looked pretty good, extending a little to catch a couple of passes.

Ameer Abdullah in a red no-contact jersey today for Day 1 of training camp for the Lions.

Darius Slay said he cried a little bit after signing his contract extension Friday. He tried holding them in but...eventually he gave in. Slay signed a four-year, $50.2 million extension to stay with the Lions.

Darius Slay said he is going to buy his mom something with his new contract that he signed today. Wouldn't say what it is because he wants it to be a surprise.

Darius Slay on what he told Lions team owner Martha Ford, who was at practice Friday: "I told them I appreciate them. I love 'em. They need to adopt me."

Lions LB DeAndre Levy went with a simple answer when asked why he is on the NFI list: "Ask Caldwell." Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he still expects Levy to be a big part of Detroit's defense this fall.
