Detroit Lions - Team Notes

The last time the Lions were in sole possession of first place this late in a season was 1993.
They control their own fate, but with games at Dallas and home against long time nemesis Green Bay, I get the sense a lot of people around Detroit are expecting the worst.
Tough not to think that way when it's been 25 years since your last playoff win.

Jim Caldwell: "You don't see many better than that" about Dallas' offensive line. Said you couple that with "a great back" and it makes them quite good.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell praises Ezekiel Elliott as Detroit prepares for a trip to Dallas. Caldwell on Elliott, "he's not a good back, he's a great back."

The Cowboys and Lions play Monday night. All the other NFC games are on Saturday and it's possible the Cowboys-Lions game will mean very little.
I asked Jim Caldwell how that might change his approach and he said, "we're trying to win every single game we play."

Matthew Stafford said he isn't bothered by his Pro Bowl snub and said if he didn't make it in 2011, he's not sure what he had to do to make it.
Matthew Stafford's reaction to not making the pro bowl, "I don't really care...if I didn't make it in 2011, I'm not sure I'm ever going to make it."
Stafford threw for 5,000 yards in 2011 and was a pro bowl alternate that season.

Matthew Stafford will have a glove change this week. The one last week was made specifically for rain. He won't need that this week against Dallas because he'll be indoors but that the middle finger will be covered up.
Matthew Stafford says he will wear a glove on his throwing hand again this weekend to protect his injured finger, but it'll be a slightly different style.
Stafford said the glove he wore last Sunday in New York was designed for rain. The Lions play indoors the next two weeks.
Matthew Stafford has a different glove on, too. This is a white glove in a similar style, with the middle finger covered and the rest of the fingers exposed.

VALUATORS ALL LIKE DALLAS AT HOME.
The Lions can virtually sew up a postseason berth with an upset of the favored Cowboys on Monday night in Jerry World. But none of our three Insiders sees that happening.

Darius Slay, Theo Riddick, Travis Swanson and Khryi Thornton all not at open portion of Lions practice today. Matthew Stafford threw as normal.

Lions P Sam Martin said his punt in the playoffs at Dallas two years ago "is not even in my mind."

Just had an interesting conversation with Lions WR Golden Tate about the Dallas defense. Tate told me the Cowboys are "a very, very good team, but are they all-world? Not so much."
When I asked him to clarify, Tate again called the Cowboys "a really, really good team" but said "I think they have some flaws." I don't think it was Tate's intention to create bulletin board material, but he may have.

Matthew Stafford ‘adopts’ family of killed police officer.
Matthew Stafford is an MVP off the field, too.
Matthew Stafford has not only been tremendous on the field this year, but he’s been amazing off the field, too. Earlier in the year, he helped donate a new gym to a struggling Detroit school. Now he has upped the ante. He and his wife Kelly adopted the family of a slain Detroit police officer for Christmas, providing them with gifts for the holiday season.
