May 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1912 The Detroit Tigers currently are on strike to protest the suspension of Ty Cobb for attacking a fan. Today, American League honcho Ban Johnson threatens all the Tiger players with lifetime suspensions if they don’t return to play. In reply, Cobb asks his teammates to end their strike.

1921 - Hal Newhouser is born in Detroit, Michigan. In 1939, Newhouser will make his major league debut for his hometown team, the Detroit Tigers. A left-handed pitcher, he will win 207 games over a 17-year career and will gain Hall of Fame honors in 1992.

1959 - The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 13 - 6, to put New York in last place for the first time in 19 years.

1971 - Martin Dihigo dies in Cienfuegos, Cuba, at the age of 65. Over the course of his career, Dihigo made seamless transitions between all nine positions and played in several countries. As a hitter, he won both batting average and home run titles; as a pitcher, he won more than 250 games and once defeated Satchel Paige while touring Cuba. He will be elected to the American Hall of Fame in 1977 and also was or will be voted into the Cuban, Mexican and Latin American Baseball Hall of Fame.

1983 - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton passes Walter Johnson to move into second place on the all-timestrikeout list. Carlton's four strikeouts put him at 3,511, just 10 behind Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros. Ryan had bettered Johnson's record earlier in the month.

2012: Max Scherzer strikes out 15 batters in 7 innings to lead the Tigers to a 4 - 3 win over the Pirates. The strikeouts are one shy of the club record of 16, held by Mickey Lolich, and are the highest total in the major leagues so far this season.

Tigers wasted Cabrera's big night.
from DetroitFox

Miguel Cabrera is putting together one of the greatest stretches in franchise history. He's hitting .389 this season, and since he came to Detroit, he's averaging .326/.403/.580 with 200 hits, 38 homers and 125 RBIs for every 162 games. He's only in his sixth season with the Tigers, but he's now within one homer of Kirk Gibson for 10th place in franchise history.

Hank Greenberg had a stretch that compares with Cabrera's, but that was in the days before World War II. So, yes, if you are a Tigers fan in your 80s or 90s, you have seen a hitter that has done something like this.

Miguel Cabrera: Best hitter ever?
During the Sunday Night game of the week on ESPN, the announcers were discussing just how great Miguel Cabrera is. One of them, I forget who, said that Miggy could be, when his career is over, considered one of the greatest hitters ever. And you really can't argue that point either. Cabrera responded by going 4-4 with 3 home runs, 4 runs and 5 RBI, raising his triple slash line to .387-.457-.659 with 11 HRs, 34 runs, 47 RBI and a 23-21 K-BB in 173 at bats.
Could he put up back to back Triple Crowns? I think he can. He is on pace for a Base Ruthian-like 42 HRs, 134 runs and 181 RBI.
