Tiger Stadium voted Michigan's all-time best sports venue.
from the freep

The readers have spoken: ?The Corner? is the best sports venue in Michigan?s history.

Tiger Stadium easily beat Ford Field, the current home of the Detroit Lions, in the finals of our best sports venue bracket. That came after a somewhat close victory against Comerica Park in the semifinals, while Ford Field edged out the Red Wings? Joe Louis Arena.

The former Corktown staple took home 78 percent of the vote in the final.

While we don?t know for sure why the reader heavily favored Tiger Stadium, we?re betting nostalgia has something to do with it. The park was built in 1912 as Navin Field, before becoming Briggs Stadium in 1938 and, finally, Tiger Stadium in 1960.

The final Tigers game at ?The Corner? took place Sept. 27, 1999. Demolition began in 2008 and was completed a year later, but the field still remains.

Thank you, readers, for voting!

I have had fond memories of games at Tiger Stadium but that place was a dump from the mid '70s to when it was torn down. Comerica Park and Ford field are much better places to watch a game.

Scout on Nick Castellanos.

How is Nick doing in LF? Does he play LF like Dirks or Matt T?

Look like he was getting 3B down at AA before he was moved. The best move the Tigers can do is move Fielder off 1B to DH in 2015 and let Miggy or Nick move to 1B.
Their 6?4 frame should help out.

Still a little work to do defensively.

I haven?t seen Castellanos in person in a month, so my observations may be a bit dated. He doesn?t necessarily take the most direct path to the ball and I have seen him misplay the carom on a few balls off the wall. That is to be expected given the position change, however I side with Marc here and I think most of the other writers for TPR (if not all) have similar thoughts.
I feel Fielder is probably the DH in the next few seasons moving Miggy to first and opening 3B with Nick ultimately sliding in there. It?s a more natural position for him.

Brayan Villarreal, currently with MudHens, out 2-4 weeks with right thumb injury.

Tigers and Yankees have something new in common - both are former teams of Brennan Boesch - who was released today.

Quintin Berry not on 40-man roster. Hitting .211 for Triple-A Omaha.
Brennan Boesch released by Yankees. Hurt. Hasn't played since June 5.

Welcome to the second half of the season, which for now does not include Omar Infante. He?s not in the lineup tonight, and he almost surely won?t be back for this series. He?s still in Lakeland working out, and will rejoin the team Saturday only for a re-evaluation from the team medical staff in preparation for a possible minor-league rehab assignment.

As for Darin Downs, he has thrown a couple of bullpen sessions over the last few days, and the next step is to set up a session against hitters this weekend. He, too, could end up on a rehab assignment next week.

Omar Infante still running half-speed, isn't with Tigers.

Infante not expected to return for Royals set.
Tigers infielder slated to have injured ankle re-evaluated on Saturday.
Omar Infante has a locker with his number in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium, but it's empty. The way his recovery is going, that locker won't be filled for this three-game series against the Royals.
The Tigers were originally hoping they could get Infante back from the 15-day disabled list coming out of the All-Star break. Instead, he remained in Florida on Friday doing rehab work on his sprained left ankle.
"He's not ready," manager Jim Leyland said, "and I have no idea when."
Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand has the steps set for Infante's return, but no timetable. Infante will rejoin the Tigers on Saturday, but only for a re-evaluation on his ankle.
Rand said Infante has been running at half-speed and fielding ground balls side to side, and he began taking full batting practice on Thursday. Infante has been making progress, but will need to run at full speed to be ready for a rehab assignment.
"We have to evaluate him first," Rand said. "Once he's full-go, then he'll go out on a rehab assignment. He's not full-go yet."
Leyland said he "pretty much knew Sunday [Infante] wasn't going to be ready" coming out of the break.
Ramon Santiago started at second base for the Tigers on Friday night. Hernan Perez, called up when Infante went on the DL retroactive to July 4, remains on the big club.

Downs progressing, able to throw off mound.
While lefty reliever Darin Downs was able to spend the All-Star break with his family in Michigan, he also spent the week making progress in his rehab from left rotator cuff tendinitis. He threw off the mound on Wednesday and Friday.
"He's progressing real well," head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said.
Downs said his shoulder feels fine, and his next step will likely be some sort of session against hitters. It could be a simulated game with the team before going out on a Minor League rehab assignment.
Downs isn't eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list until Monday, when the Tigers open a four-game series with the White Sox in Chicago.

Mariano's All-Star finale highlight for Leyland.
By the time the Tigers' plane landed in Detroit after Tuesday's All-Star Game in New York, it was after 3 a.m. ET on Wednesday, so it took a while for American League manager Jim Leyland to put the Midsummer Classic behind him.

The Tigers skipper was ready for the second half as his team flew to Kansas City on Thursday evening, but he won't forget his All-Star experience.

"I thought we really put on a good show," Leyland said before Friday's second-half opener against the Royals. "I thought it was terrific. Of course we won [3-0], but I thought it was a terrific All-Star Game, maybe one of the best of all-time because of the Mariano Rivera situation and how it scripted out."

The ovation honoring Rivera before the bottom of the eighth inning, in particular, was one of the better moments in All-Star Game history, he thought.
"I don't know how it could've played out any better," Leyland said.
Some of that script was Leyland's design; he had told Rivera ahead of time that he would try to set him up to pitch the eighth inning. Some of that, including the lead itself, came together by fortune.

There was some confusion about how the plan came together for Rivera to have the field to himself for a tribute before the bottom of the eighth. Leyland said he thought Major League Baseball officials had mentioned something about it ahead of time, but he wasn't clear. His bench coach, Gene Lamont, reminded him between innings that they didn't want the players out there yet.
"I did eventually tell them, 'This guy's good, but he does need some fielders,'" Leyland said.

What amazed Leyland was Rivera's ability to handle the tribute and the pressure of his final All-Star appearance, yet still pitch his usual effective inning.
"He got three outs as fast as you could," Leyland said. "After all that stuff, to get three outs like that, like it was just nothing, that amazed me."

Octavio Dotel, on the 60-day disabled list since late April with recurring right elbow inflammation, has been making progress on a throwing program in recent days and could begin throwing bullpen sessions again shortly, according to Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. Dotel was throwing off a mound earlier this year when elbow discomfort stopped the progression.

What was initially hoped to be a right thumb sprain for reliever Brayan Villarreal at Triple-A Toledo now appears to be worse. Rand said Villarreal will miss two to four weeks before he can resume throwing. With the Mud Hens' season ending on Sept. 2, a worst-case scenario could effectively make this a lost season for Villarreal.

Victor Martinez's diving stop and no-look toss behind first base last month against the Red Sox was selected as the top play of the first half by MLB Network.

July 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1913 - The Tigers send 38-year-old George Mullin (1-6), a five times 20-game winner, to Washington. Mullin pitched a no-hitter a year ago on his birthday.

1916: The Tigers beat the 2nd-place Red Sox 3 - 2, in 13 innings when Ty Cobb scores on a Ralph Young single. Cobb reaches on an infield chop and a throwing error by Babe Ruth, who takes over for Rube Foster in the 9th with the score tied 2 - 2.

1948 - An unprecedented 10-game suspension and $500 fine of an umpire, the veteran Bill McGowan, is announced by American League President Will Harridge following a confrontation in the Washington-Cleveland game. Tired of Senator pitcher Ray Scarborough continually complaining about strike calls, McGowan threw a ball-and-strike indicator at him. After that, he ejects Nats manager Joe Kuhel and several coaches. Kuhel also lodged a protest after yesterday's 11th-inning loss when Ed Stewart was thrown out at home in the 10th. When Stewart argued the call with plate ump Joe Paparella, McGowan threw a ball at Stewart.

1958 - Jim Bunning of the Tigers pitches a 3 - 0 no-hitter over the Red Sox and strikes out 12. Only two walks and a hit batsman mar Bunning's performance as he wins his sixth game in seven decisions (8-6). Only one hard hit ball by Ted Williams was caught on the run with an amazing catch by RF Al Kaline. In game two, Ike Delock wins his 10th straight for Boston.

1979: Rusty Staub, a spring holdout who got off to a slow start, is traded by Detroit to his former team Montreal for a minor league player to be named later.

1998: The Tigers take the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees by a 4 - 3 score in 17 innings. The New Yorkers bounce back to take the nightcap by the identical score. The 26 innings take nearly nine hours to play.

2000: Major League Baseball offers to rehire 10 of the 22 umpires let go last September. The offer stands only as part of a new labor contract, and only if the umpires' old union agrees to settle its grievance with baseball.
