Brad Ausmus: Anibal Sanchez working way back from finger injury: 'It's not gross anymore'.
from Mlive

Anibal's blister showing signs of healing.
The blister that landed Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list no longer qualifies as gross, according to manager Brad Ausmus. It has healed past that stage.
"It's easier on the eyes," Ausmus said.
If Sanchez is able to return with the minimum 15-day stay on the DL, it'll look much better for Ausmus. At this point, all signs point to that.
"The rawness kind of seems to have gone away," Ausmus said. "It's just a matter now of building up the skin onto that finger where it can take the friction of the baseball coming off of it."
It's possible, Ausmus said, that Sanchez will throw on Wednesday.
The way the Tigers schedule plays out, even a minimum stay will require two starts from a fill-in. Detroit can roll with a four-man rotation through Monday. With Sanchez not eligible to come off the DL until a week later, the Tigers will need a fifth starter for May 6 and 11.
The best candidate to get the call, left-handed prospect Robbie Ray, delivered five shutout innings Monday for Triple-A Toledo to stretch his scoreless streak to 13 1/3 innings over his last two starts. He's 3-2 with a 1.59 ERA in five starts for the Mud Hens, allowing 27 hits over 28 1/3 innings with five walks and 21 strikeouts.
The Tigers would need to open a spot for Ray on the 40-man roster.

Early breaks in schedule messing with Tigers' routine.
DETROIT -- For most of the Tigers roster, the third rainout of April on Sunday was another impediment in what has been a chaotic early schedule that has kept them out of a daily routine.

"It's been kind of choppy," manager Brad Ausmus said. "I've eaten a lot more, since there's more free time for meals. But baseball-wise, it's been too much. It's good to have a few off-days early, but this has probably been a little bit too much as far as finding a rhythm."

For the bullpen, on the other hand, it was an extra day off to catch its breath after extended work for most of the past week.

"We needed the rest," Joba Chamberlain said. "We'll get that [extra] day off on Thursday, but it was nice to kind of reset after not really throwing much early and then kind of getting after it the last few weeks."

The way the Tigers have played the past few weeks, they both have a point. Neither hitters nor pitchers have had a stretch to find a daily routine, though they played 11 straight days before Sunday's rainout. Yet, tack on Sunday's rainout to scheduled off-days Monday and Thursday, and the Tigers will play just twice in a five-day stretch, including their second time in four weeks with back-to-back days off.

Add up the off time, and Detroit played just 21 games over the first 29 days of the season, easily the fewest in the Majors. By contrast, the White Sox entered Tuesday having played 27 games.

"We've been talking about it since the first road trip, really. We haven't had a rhythm," Ausmus said. "We had an off-day and a rainout the first homestand, three off-days [after that], bad weather the following 10 days. There's no continuity to the whole thing."

For many of the Tigers relievers, the work has come in bunches. After Ausmus had to find opportunities to get relievers work in the opening week and a half, Detroit's bullpen covered 15 1/3 innings over a four-day stretch through Saturday, enough that both Justin Miller and Jose Ortega were called up as fresh arms.

Both have stuck around as part of what for now is an eight-man bullpen with Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list and no fifth starter needed until next week.

"We have a better idea of our routine now, with knowing when we pitch and roles kind of figuring themselves out," Chamberlain said. "Knowing what we need to do and mentally preparing ourselves before the game, makes it a little bit easier.

"Now you can kind of reset and get a good stretch again."

April 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1922 - Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox pitches a 2 - 0 perfect game against the Detroit Tigers.

1946 - Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians strikes out 11 and pitches his second of three career no-hitters, his first since returning from a three-and-a-half year stint in World War II. Feller defeats the New York Yankees, 1 - 0.

1952 - Ted Williams plays his final game before leaving for military duty inKorea. In his last at-bat on "Ted Williams Day" at Fenway Park, he blasts a game-winning, two-run home run against Dizzy Trout of the Detroit Tigers. The home run gives the Red Sox a 5 - 3 victory.

1967 - Steve Barber and Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles combine on a no-hitter, but still lose the game to the Detroit Tigers, 2 - 1. A wild Barber gives up 10 walks in eight and one-third innings before giving way to Miller, who pitches one-third of an inning.

2005: Major league players are asked by Commissioner Bud Selig to agree to a 50-game suspension for the first offense, a 100-game suspension for the second offense and a lifelong ban after the third offense for the use of steroids. In addition to the harsher "three-strike" rule, the commissioner is also seeking a ban on amphetamines.
2010: Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch both hit their first major league home run in the 4th inning as Detroit beats theAngels, 10 - 6. Another rookie, Austin Jackson, goes 5 for 5 for Detroit. Sizemore's dinger follows one by Gerald Laird, while Boesch's is a grand slam during the 8-run inning.

Game Notes from High Heat Stats;
Tigers 4 - White Sox 3 ? Beautiful. Bryan Holaday?s perfect 2-out bunt gave Detroit a lead in the 9th, cashing in a 3-base error by RF Dayan Viciedo. It also picked up rookie Nick Castellanos, who had just whiffed to complete a rough oh-fer (three Ks, once with bags full to end the 6th). Holaday added his first career steal, but you can only ask so much from the baseball gods.

The Sox jumped up 3-0 on Justin Verlander (2.18 at game time), but Detroit squared up with four straight 2-out singles in the 6th.

Most scorers would have given a triple on the ball Viciedo missed, don?t you think?

Robbie Ray to start for Tigers on Tuesday against Astros.

Top Tigers prospect Ray to start Tuesday.
The Tigers acquired prospect Robbie Ray in last fall's Doug Fister trade with an eye toward their rotation of the future. With Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list, Detroit in need of a spot starter and Ray tearing up batting orders at Triple-A Toledo, the future is coming a little sooner than expected.
The Tigers made official what had been suspected for the past few days, announcing Ray as their scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Astros at Comerica Park. That's the day they'll finally need a fifth starter again after going more than a week without one thanks to off-days, rainouts and the Sanchez injury.
The 22-year-old left-hander will make his Major League debut a year after he was pitching in High Class A ball in the Nationals' system. He had 11 starts at the Double-A level when Detroit acquired him as the prospect centerpiece in the much-scrutinized Fister trade.
The Tigers made an aggressive promotion with Ray by putting him at Triple-A Toledo to open this season. After five starts for the Mud Hens, he has handled International League hitters far beyond his age.
Ray picked up his third win of the season Tuesday with five shutout innings and five strikeouts, extending his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings over his last three outings. He fell two outs shy of a shutout April 23, allowing four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts against a talented Indianapolis squad that includes Pirates prospect Gregory Polanco.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Wednesday that Ray will pitch one inning for Toledo on Friday, giving him one final bit of preparation on his normal turn while not tiring him out ahead of his start three days later.
"He's pitched very well for them his last few starts," Ausmus said. "He's been outstanding. And with Sanchez down, we need someone to fill his slot and hopefully do it well.
"He's still learning, and he's certainly not a finished product, even now. We think he's got the stuff to be able to get big-league hitters out, but he's definitely still in the learning process as a pitcher."
The Astros entered Wednesday batting about 40 points higher against left-handers (.235) than righties (.195), but for a low batting average nonetheless. As opponents go, it's a relatively good setup for a young pitcher to break into the big leagues.
If all goes well and the Tigers don't have another rainout beforehand, Ray would presumably get one more start against the Twins at Comerica Park on May 11. Sanchez is eligible to come off the disabled list the next day.
Coincidentally, Ray will make his Major League debut the day before Fister makes his Nationals debut. Fister opened the season on the disabled list with a right lat strain.
The Tigers will need to make roster moves to fit Ray on both the 25- and 40-man rosters. Most likely, they'll take care of the 25-man roster by dropping their bullpen back to seven relievers. The 40-man move is more complicated, since they've already put Bruce Rondon, Jose Iglesias and Andy Dirks on the 60-day DL.
