May 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907 Wild Bill Donovan of the Tigers steals second, third, and home in the fifth inning against Cleveland. No wonder they call him wild. Added bonus: this wild baserunner is actually a star pitcher.

1917 - Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox allows only two hits as he outpitches Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, 1 - 0, at Griffith Stadium. Ruth helps himself by driving in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

1922 Ty Cobb laces out his 500th career double.

1959 - A crowd of 93,103 comes to the Los Angeles Coliseum on Roy Campanella Night to show their affection for the paralyzed former Dodgercatcher. The Dodgers are beaten by the New York Yankees, 6 - 2, in anexhibition game that follows the ceremonies. The crowd is a record that will not be broken until the Dodgers return to the Coliseum for another exhibition contest on March 29, 2008.

1995 - Former All-Star outfielder Gus Bell dies at the age of 66. As the patriarch of a three-generation baseball family, Bell reached the 100-RBI mark four times while starring for the Cincinnati Reds. His son, Buddy, and his grandsons, David and Mike, later played in the major leagues.

2009: The Dodgers' star outfielder Manny Ramirez is suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance. He is the most prominent player yet caught under Major League Baseball's PED policy implemented in 2005.

2010: On the other side of the age scale, Jamie Moyer still baffles opposing hitters at age 47. He tosses a two-hit shutoutas the Phillies defeat the Braves, 7 - 0. He is the oldest pitcher to record a shutout in major league history; the mark was held by Hall of Famer Phil Niekro who was 46 at the time of his last whitewash on October 6, 1985. He also becomes the first hurler to toss shutouts in four different decades.

2011: Justin Verlander pitches the second no-hitter in the majors in less than a week, following Francisco Liriano's gem on May 1st, when the Tigers shut down the Blue Jays, 9 - 0. Only an 8th-inning walk to J.P. Arencibia, who is then erased in a double play, keeps Verlander from a perfect game. Verlander becomes the 28th pitcher in major league history with two no-hitters.

Tigers 11 - Astros 4 ? A confidence-boosting debut inning for Robbie Ray: No outs, first-and-third ? whiff, whiff, groundout. Then Miggy bashed out a lead for him. Ray got into the 6th before he was nicked; Evan Reed came on and faced 4 batters, got 2 DPs. Detroit piled on at the end, as Cabrera notched 4 RBI for the first time since last June 1, and his second 4-hit game since last July 7. (In case you don?t remember his 2013 start: .365-30-95 at the All-Star break.)
Three Tigers hit sac flies, upping their AL lead despite the fewest games.
21-53, 16 RBI in 12 games for Miggy since scraping bottom at .206 on April 21.
Ray, who came in the Doug Fister deal, wasn?t expected this soon. He just reached double-A last summer, and Detroit?s rotation was set. But he started hot at Toledo, Anibal Sanchez went down, and voila

Tigers pitcher Luke Putkonen rehabs with Whitecaps, who move into first place with win.
from Mlive

Reliever Putkonen begins rehab assignment.
DETROIT -- Luke Putkonen delivered a scoreless inning on one hit Wednesday afternoon in his rehab appearance for Class A West Michigan.
The outing was the first of what is expected to be two rehab appearances for Putkonen, who has spent the last two and a half weeks on the disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. He's expected to throw another one Friday, possibly for Triple-A Toledo. The Mud Hens return home Friday from a week-long road trip to the East Coast, which is what led the Tigers to send Putkonen to West Michigan.
Putkonen threw 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes in the seventh inning against Lake County. He allowed a one-out ground-ball single to Ivan Castillo, but stranded him with a flyout and a groundout.
