July 5 in Tigers and mlb history history:

1914 - Hall of Famer and Tigers' Harry Heilmann hits his first home run.

1934 - Lou Gehrig hits an inside-the-park grand slam, as the Yankees beat the Senators, 8 - 3. It is his 4th of the season and 17th overall, passing Babe Ruth's career total. Gehrig will eventually set a career record of 23 grand slams. Gehrig now has 321 career home runs to Ruth's 698.

1947 - Striking out as a pinch hitter in an Indian 6 - 5 loss to the White Sox, 22-year old Larry Doby becomes the first black to appear in the American League. The former Newark Eagles standout will play in the major leagues for 13 years, amassing 1,515 hits, just three less than Jackie Robinson. Tomorrow, he will go 1 for 5 in his first full game at 1B.

1952 - The Tigers fire their manager of four years, Red Rolfe, replacing him with the popular pitcher Freddie Hutchinson a Tigers pitcher for 10 years. Detroit loses over 100 games for the first time in franchises history. Hutchinson, who manages through the Tigers 1954 season, has new blood on the team with players Harvey Kuenn and Al Kaline, and pitchers Billy Hoeft*, and Paul Foytack.

1962 Rocky Colavito hits three home runs and 5 rbi in a loss to the indians.

1969: OF Mickey Stanley plays his 220th straight errorless game and C Bill Freehan picks Paul Blair off third base unassisted. Blair, on third with a triple, strolls too slowly back to the bag after the bat flies out of the hands of Frank Robinson.

1972: In a game against the Royals in Kansas City, Mickey Lolich strikes out the 2,000th batter of his career. In the fifth inning, Lolich fans Cookie Rojas to become the first Tiger hurler to reach the 2,000-K mark. He will end up with 2,679 strikeouts in his career with Detroit, the most by a left-hander in American League history.

1984 - Down 4 - 1 with two outs in the 9th, the visiting Tigers score six runs to beat the Rangers 7 - 4. Lou Whitaker's bases-loaded single scores two, Alan Trammell's single scores another, and Kirk Gibson seals it with a three-run shot down the right field line. Charlie Hough is the loser, while reliever Aurelio Lopez's record goes up to 7-0.

1989 - The Tigers sign amateur free agent pitcher Jose Lima.

1996 - The Michigan Court of Appeals rules against the Tiger Stadium Fan Club, clearing a hurdle for the Tigers to get a new stadium.

2002 - On this date the great Ted Williams, outfielder, manager; All-Star, and Hall of Famer passes away.

2002 - The A?s, Tigers, and Yankees combine for a three-way trade. The Tigers get Carlos Pena and Jeremy Bonderman, the A?s land Ted Lilly, and the Yankees wind up with Jeff Weaver.

2011: Justin Verlander may be headed to the All-Star Game, but it is Dan Haren who pitches a two-hitter, outdueling the Tigers' ace in a 1 - 0 Angels victory. Verlander and manager Jim Leyland are both ejected by umpire Joe West after Verlander exits the game in the 8th inning.

Tigers' Victor Martinez expects to miss next two games after reaggravating sore right side.

V-Mart leaves game with irritation of sore back.
DETROIT -- Victor Martinez's return to the Tigers' lineup lasted just a game and a half. His absence this time could linger into next week.
One night after homering in his return from a sore back, Martinez left Friday's game against the Rays after three at-bats when he aggravated the injury. The soreness is centered on his right side, he said, and originated from a swing he took last Sunday in Houston.
Martinez is expected to miss Saturday's middle game of this series, and seemed pessimistic about his chances for Sunday as well.
"I don't know," Martinez said. "The way I'm feeling right now, I don't see it happening."
With a day off on Monday, Martinez could take three days of rest before returning for Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers.
Martinez had returned to action Thursday and homered off Rays lefty Erik Bedard, quieting any lingering concern over his status. Ausmus said Friday that the switch-hitting Martinez felt better swinging right-handed than left-handed, but said later that Martinez had reported improvement from both sides.
Friday's matchup against Rays righty Alex Cobb put his status to the test. So did Cobb's fourth-inning pitch that hit Martinez in the back of his right leg, leaving him hobbling to first base. He stayed in the game and rounded the bases to score on a Torii Hunter groundout, then added an RBI single off Cobb two innings later.
The pitch had nothing to do with the injury, Martinez said. The swing he put on the RBI single, however, aggravated it.
"One swing," he said. "That's all it takes."
When Martinez's DH spot came back around in the eighth inning, however, Rajai Davis pinch-hit.
The Tigers face right-hander Chris Archer on Saturday before a nationally televised Sunday night matchup against left-hander David Price. If Martinez can't go, Davis would likely re-enter the starting lineup, leaving J.D. Martinez or Hunter to move to DH.

Tigers ace Max Scherzer had little trouble with the Rays lineup on Thursday night, as he limited them to just one run on 2 hits, a walk and struck out 7 in 8 innings in the Tigers 8-1 win. After giving up 10 runs in 4 innings back on June 17th, Scherzer has given up just 4 earned runs over his last three starts, with a 28-4 strikeout to walk rate in 21 innings. The win moved his record to 10-3 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 139-33 strikeout to walk rate in 119.1 innings on the season.

Continued soreness keeps V-Mart out of lineup.
DETROIT -- Victor Martinez was held out of the Tigers' lineup for the fourth time in six games Saturday as he continues to recover from soreness in his left side.

Manager Brad Ausmus removed Martinez from Friday night's game against Tampa Bay after he was bothered in his last at-bat by the soreness that kept him out of the Oakland series earlier in the week.

"If push comes to shove, we could probably keep him down all the way through the All-Star break," Ausmus said before Saturday's game. "But right now, we're just going to see how he feels every day."

Martinez hadn't missed a game this season before the week began.
Ausmus added that Martinez's injury should have no bearing on his status as an All-Star.

"He should make the All-Star team," Ausmus said. "I hope he does make the All-Star team. Obviously, if he's not healthy, it's a different story. He still deserves to be an All-Star, whether he's physically able to play in the All-Star Game, or not."
Martinez is leading the Tigers with a .328 batting average and 21 home runs.

Verlander: A's made Cubs deal with Tigers in mind.
DETROIT -- The Oakland Athletics left town on Wednesday having been swept out of Comerica Park. The Tigers were busy with the Rays when the A's made their move for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, acquiring the pitchers in a deal with the Cubs.

When Justin Verlander heard about the trade later Friday night, he felt the target on their backs. It wasn't so much about this week, but the last two Octobers.

"I found it very interesting," Verlander said Saturday. "Really, when I saw that trade, I thought that they made that trade for us. No doubt about it in my mind. If they want to win a World Series, they're envisioning that they have to go through us, and even though it's been two fantastic series, it's been heartbreaking for them the last two years."

The Tigers and A's have met in the American League Division Series the last two years, with both series going to a winner-take-all Game 5. Both times, Verlander broke Bay Area hearts with dominant performances -- a complete-game four-hitter with 11 strikeouts in 2012, then eight shutout innings with 10 strikeouts last year. Neither A's counterpart -- Jarrod Parker two years ago, then rookie Sonny Gray last year -- delivered a quality start in return.

Oakland has scored one run on Verlander in 31 postseason innings the last two years. With Max Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez, Verlander said, they have others capable of doing the same.

Regardless of the matchups, Verlander said, it's the concept.
"When you have a team like ours, somebody's going to go out there and dominate," Verlander said. "And it just happens the last couple years [against Oakland in Game 5], it's been me. And I think they felt like they needed that person. Star power in the playoffs goes a long way. Power pitching in the playoffs goes a long way."

If the regular season ended today, the Tigers and A's would have to advance to the AL Championship Series to meet again. Oakland owns baseball's best record, and would meet the Wild Card winner in a Division Series, while the Tigers would match up with the winner of the AL East, a race the Orioles now lead after the A's beat the Blue Jays on Friday night.

While the A's have won the AL West the last two years despite roster turnover, and reached the postseason seven times since 2000, their lone playoff series win came in '06. They swept the Twins in the Division Series that year, only to lose to the Tigers in the ALCS.

"I think a lot of factors had to do with why they did it," Verlander said later. "Obviously October's the main one, not necessarily us but October in general."

That said, the Tigers have won the AL Central each of the last three seasons, and have reached the postseason four times since 2006. Each time, they've won at least one series, reaching the World Series twice. Each year, their strength has been dominant starting pitching, the kind the A's just added.

McCoy leaves game with right hamstring strain.
DETROIT -- Tigers lefty reliever Pat McCoy left Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Rays in the ninth inning with a strained hamstring after racing Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist to first base on an infield hit.

After the play at first, McCoy returned to the mound and threw a warmup pitch but came off the field with Detroit trainer Kevin Rand immediately after.

"We'll have to figure out what we're going to do in terms of what his status is going to be," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "I haven't talked to [Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski] about it yet, but we'll make that decision here in a little bit."

According to Ausmus, McCoy felt the injury on his second step on his way to first base to try and get Zobrist. Blaine Hardy, another lefty, replaced McCoy on the mound.

Since making his Major League debut on June 22, McCoy has appeared in five games for Detroit. He holds a 1.80 ERA, having allowed just one run.

McCoy was called up from Triple-A to take the roster spot that opened when lefty Ian Krol went to the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. Krol pitched a successful inning in a rehab assignment Friday night.

July 6 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917 - Ty Cobb's hitting streak ends at 35 games as White Sox pitchers Red Faber and Jim Scott hold him hitless. His streak began May 31. Cobb holds the American League mark of 40 straight games, set in 1912, but George Sisler will ring up 41 games in 1922.

1929: After watching the Tigers belt eight home runs on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, by Dale Alexander 1B, Earl Whitehill P, Roy Johnson LF, Dale Alexander again, Merv Shea C, Roy Johnson again, and Marty McManus 3B, the Browns use the off day to erect a screen in front of the RF pavilion. The screen stretches 156 feet from the foul pole toward CF, 310 feet down the line from home. In the next day's game, Heinie Manush will hit three balls off the screen against the Yankees' Waite Hoyt, while Babe Ruth will hit two off it in the series. This screen will remain in place into the 1940s, the only stadium with extended OF seating where it is impossible to catch a home run ball.

1935 Hank Greenberg hits his 100th RBI of the year. He sets a record for the earliest to ever do it?in the 75th game of the season for the Tigers.

1941 - A center field monument dedicated to Lou Gehrig is unveiled by the Yankees. The memorial is a tribute by his teammates of their beloved captain who died last month of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

1942 - Powered by first-inning home runs by Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau and Tigers first baseman Rudy York, the American League All-Stars defeats the National League at the Polo Grounds 3 - 1.

1956: Ford Frick inaugurates the Cy Young Award, to honor the outstanding pitcher each year. The BBWAA will do the voting. Only one pitcher will be honored each year until 1967, when a pitcher will be selected in each league.

1971 - Norm Cash belts a pair of 3-run homers to power the Tigers to a 12 - 7 win over the Yanks. Catcher Bill Freehan and Shortstop Ed Brinkman each have 2 hits and 5 rbi between them. Mickey Lolich goes all the way allowing just 2 of the runs as earned for the win.

1983 - In the 50th anniversary All-Star Game at Chicago's Comiskey Park, the American League routs the National League 13 - 3 for its first win since 1971. The AL breaks the game open with seven runs in the 4th inning, highlighted by Fred Lynn's grand slam - the first ever in All-Star competition.

1990 Jack Morris nearly throws a perfect game. He permits just one base runner, a one-out first inning single by Kurt Stillwell, who is immediately gobbled up in a double play.

1994 - At Tiger Stadium: Matthew Duprey 11 of Novi, is selected as the team?s 100 millionth fan. He throws out the first pitch, receives free merchandise, and sits in the dugout and the owner?s suite as the Tigers lose to the White Sox.

1997: In Detroit, the Tigers top the Orioles, 14 - 9, their 3rd straight win after 11 consecutive losses. Brian Johnson and Travis Fryman homer for the Tigers while teammate Bobby Higginson adds a two-run inside-the-park homer, his fifth round tripper this week. For Scott Erickson (11-4), it is the worst start of his career for Baltimore, allowing all 12 runs, 11 earned, and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. Willie Blair (6-4) takes the win in relief.
