Pitching matchups set: Shane Greene chosen over Kyle Ryan for start in series finale vs. Chicago Cubs.
mlive

Here are the pitching matchups for the Tigers-Cubs series this week at Comerica Park:

? Tuesday: RHP Anibal Sanchez (3-7, 5.69 ERA) vs. LHP Jon Lester (4-4, 3.86 ERA), 7:08 p.m.
? Wednesday: RHP Shane Greene (4-5, 5.40 ERA) vs. RHP Jake Arrieta (5-4, 3.04 ERA), 7:08 p.m.

Ausmus wouldn't get into his rotation beyond Wednesday. He said he needed to see how Verlander felt after his rehabilitation start Saturday night in Toledo. But it's logical that Ausmus would want to tell Verlander where he will slot into the rotation face to face before announcing it through the media.

With off-days Monday and Thursday, either Verlander or David Price will have to start on two extra days of rest. Expect Verlander to do that with Price starting on one extra day. If that is the case, here is what the pitching matchups would look like next weekend.

? Friday: LHP David Price (5-2, 2.70 ERA) vs. RHP Danny Salazar (6-1, 3.50 ERA), 7:08 p.m.
? Saturday: RHP Justin Verlander (no record) vs. RHP Carlos Carrasco (7-4, 3.92 ERA), 4:08 p.m.
? Sunday: RHP Alfredo Simon (5-3, 2.97 ERA) vs. RHP Corey Kluber (3-6, 3.61 ERA), 1:08 p.m.

June 8 in Tigers and mlb history:

1933 - Jimmie Foxx hits three home runs in his first three at-bats as the Philadelphia Athletics outscore the New York Yankees, 14 - 10. Foxx had homered his last time up the previous day to give him four consecutive home runs.

1969 - The New York Yankees' uniform number 7 is retired on Mickey Mantle Day. A crowd of 60,096 comes to Yankee Stadium to honor Mantle and watches New York sweep the Chicago White Sox.

1978 - In the 12th round of the amateur draft, the Detroit Tigers select Michigan State?s Kirk Gibson. Gibson starred in football and only played baseball for one year in college, but he announces his attention to focus on baseball.

1983 - Lou Whitaker has a career high 11 total bases as he gets two doubles, a triple, and a home run. He thus misses the cycle by a single in the Tigers 6 - 3 win over boston.

2001: Damion Easley becomes the 9th Detroit Tigers player to hit for the cycle, and the first since 1993 when Travis Fryman accomplished the feat. Detroit beats Milwaukee 9 - 4.
