Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Billy Pierce, who died Friday at the age of 88, is a White Sox legend. Regarded as one of the best pitchers not in the Hall of Fame, the erstwhile southpaw earned 186 of his 211 career wins with Chicago?s South Side squad.

He could have been a Tigers legend.

A native of Detroit and Highland Park, Pierce broke into the big leagues with his hometown team. He wasn?t there very long. Just 27 games into his Tigers tenure, he was swapped to Chicago in exchange for 33-year-old catcher Aaron Robinson. The deal ended up being a steal for the Comiskey-owned club. Robinson had one good season in Motown and was released two years later. Fronting the White Sox pitching staff, Pierce was an All-Star seven times from 1953-1961.

My Dad knew him as a neighbor and spoke with him when he was around. When he was traded, Pierce was dejected. Dad told me he told Billy that it could work out for him and to look at it with a positive attitude. The rest is history. Borderline HOF'er.

Nick Castellanos hasn?t been a Detroit Tiger for very long. The 23-year-old third baseman debuted in September 2013 and is in just his second full big-league season. His best days are ahead of him.

They can?t come fast enough for many who follow the Tigers. Castellanos is hitting .240/.293/.395, with a 25.3% K-rate and a 7.3% walk rate, and patience is wearing thin. On a recent trip to Michigan, I heard more kvetching about Castellanos than I did about any other Tiger. If my fan-interaction experience was indicative, the former first-round pick is becoming a whipping boy.

Count me among those who believe Castellanos will eventually emerge as a productive bat in the middle of the Detroit lineup. It may happen sooner rather than later. The still-young slugger has shown glimpses of his potential in recent weeks. Six of his 11 home runs came in July, as did 10 of his 27 walks. Plate discipline remains his biggest hurdle to success.

?When I struggle, it?s because I?m not swinging at good pitches,? admitted Castellanos. ?It?s not because my swing isn?t working, it?s because I?m not getting a pitch to drive. If I swing at good pitches I?m going to have success. If I chase, the pitchers are going to have success.?

Castellanos has always had a simple hitting approach. He looks for pitches in the strike zone that he can attack. He told me little has changed for him beyond continuing to try to mature as a hitter. As for the reaction of fans and the media, he?s learned what to expect.

?Reporters are pretty much all result-based,? Castellanos told me. ?If they see good results, they ask me what?s going well. But a lot of time, results are really luck. No one comes up and says, ?You?ve had a great week at the plate? when you?ve hit .100, even though you made good contact and drew some walks. But if you have three a**-out singles and a broken-bat knock up the middle, everybody is like, ?Oh man, you?re seeing the ball extremely,? even though that wasn?t the case at all.?

August 3 in Tigers and mlb history:

1914: Yankee catcher Les Nunamaker throws out three Tigers trying to steal second base. It will be the only time a backstop has accomplished the feat in a single inning this century.

1923 - No games are played following the death of President Warren G. Harding in San Francisco on August 2. The schedule will also be canceled a week later on the day of his funeral.

1950 - The Pirates sell Hank Borowy to the Tigers.

1955: Frank Lary of the Tigers beats Washington 3 - 0 on a complete game 2-hitter with 0 strikeouts.

1959 - For the first time in major league history a second All-Star Game is played in the same season. The American League posts a 5 - 3 victory at the Los Angeles Coliseum as the White Sox's Nellie Fox singles in the decisive run.

1960 - Frank Lane trades managers with Detroit GM Bill DeWitt. The Indians' Joe Gordon (49-46) is dealt to the Tigers for Jimmy Dykes (44-52).

1980: Al Kaline, Duke Snider, Chuck Klein, and Tom Yawkey are inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

1992 - Tigers president Bo Schembechler and team chairman Jim Campbell are both fired.

1995 - The Senate Judiciary Committee sends a bill calling for the partial repeal of baseball's antitrust exemption to the full Senate. The vote is just 9-8.

1999 - The Major League Umpires Association files unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board to block the American League and National League from using minor league replacements in the wake of the union's mass resignation strategy.

2009: Justin Verlander of the Tigers gives up 5 runs to the Orioles in the 1st inning, before settling down. Brian Roberts leads off the game with a home run, and four more runs score before the second out is recorded. Detroit scores three in the bottom of the inning, on doubles by Placido Polanco and Miguel Cabrera, who then homers to tie the game in the 5th. With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Clete Thomas homers to deepest center field off Danys Baez to give Detroit the comeback 6 - 5 win, which extends its lead over the idle White Sox to 2 games in the AL Central.

Toledo's Larry Parrish calls it a career

The Tigers may have restocked their minor leagues with last week's trades, but they're losing one valuable member of the organization.

Mud Hens manager Larry Parrish announced Sunday he's retiring after this season, according to the Toledo Blade. The 61-year-old former Tigers manager in the late 1990s has been at the helm in Toledo since 2003. He has the most managerial wins (683) in Mud Hens history.

Parrish has been in the Tigers' organization since managing the Niagara Falls Rapids in 1992. He has served as a scout, roving instructor and bench coach and led the Tigers for the end of the 1998 season and all of 1999, the final year in Tiger Stadium.
