Cameron Maybin Comes Home.

All told, the Tigers got a nice depth piece for a very low cost. The trade was a good one, but again the question is how much the Tigers think he figures into the plans for 2016. If they understand that he is a supplemental piece and not a major outfield upgrade, great! End of article.

If the Tigers think Maybin-Gose-Martinez is a winning outfield, they are taking a giant leap of faith. They still need another bat, but Maybin does fill a role they needed to fill. Now to reunite him with Andrew Miller?

November 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1957 - In a controversial vote, Mickey Mantle barely edges Ted Williams, 233 to 209, to win the American League MVP Award. Mantle batted .365 with 34 home runs for the first-place New York Yankees, while Williams, of the third-place Boston Red Sox, led the AL with a .388 average and 38 home runs, as well as a stunning .731 slugging percentage. Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey fumes at the news, noting that two Chicago writers listed Williams in the ninth and tenth places on their ballots.

1960 - The American League proposes that both leagues expand to nine teams in 1961 and begin interleague play. There will be expansion in the American League in 1961, but interleague play will not arrive until 1997.

1961 - Frank Robinson becomes the first Cincinnati Reds player in 21 years to win the National League MVP Award, taking 219 of 224 possible votes.

1978: Detroit Tigers second baseman Lou Whitaker wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award with 21 of 28 first-place votes over Paul Molitor of the Milwaukee Brewers. Whitaker will be the youngest AL Rookie of the Year until Mike Trout passes him 34 years later.

Acquired OF-R Cameron Maybin from Braves in exchange for LHP Ian Krol and LHP Gabe Speier [11/19].
Unless the Tigers intended to start one of Tyler Collins or Steven Moya in 2016, they needed to add at least one outfielder this winter. In Maybin, they hope they have a replacement for free agent Rajai Davis. Even if Anthony Gose remains the primary center fielder, Maybin could platoon with any of Gose, Collins, or Moya. He?s generally acquitted himself well against right-handers, too, so (as Davis did) he?s a tolerable full-time guy if someone gets hurt. He?s also (as Davis was) an unusually good fit for a bench role, if that?s how things shake out, since he runs the bases exceptionally well, and has all the tools to be an average defender at all three outfield positions.
