July 31 in Tigers and mlb history:

1914 - Red Sox owner Joe Lannin buys the Providence Grays (IL) and Melrose Park from the Detroit Tigers for $75,000. Detroit gets to pick one player from the Providence roster and they select P Red Oldham, overlooking Carl Mays. Detroit then purchases the Buffalo (IL) team.

1916: Babe Ruth fires a two-hitter, by Ty Cobb and George Burns, for a 6 - 0 win for the Red Sox over the Tigers.

1942 - Charlie Gehringer’s final career home run is a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit loses, though; the homer run just turns a 7-4 deficit into a 7-6 loss.

1959 Al Kaline hits the first of two career inside the park home runs.

1961 - The 2nd All-Star Game of 1961 ends in a 1 - 1 tie at Fenway Park. Rocky Colavito homers for the American League run. Heavy rains end the exhibition after nine innings.

1981 - The fifty-day old baseball strike is settled as owners and players agree on a pooling system for free agent compensation. The All-Star game will mark the end of baseball's first-ever mid-season work stoppage.

1996: The Dodgers obtain OF Chad Curtis from the Tigers in exchange for pitchers Joey Eischen and John Cummings. Curtis will lead off in place of the cancer-stricken Brett Butler.

1996 - The Tigers trade Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for a minor leaguer and Ruben Sierra.

2005 - Detroit sends Kyle Farnsworth to Atlanta for Roman Colon and Zach Miner.

2011: Two of the best pitchers in the American League face each other, as Detroit's Justin Verlander faces off against Los Angeles' Jered Weaver, both looking for their 15th win. Verlander takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning, while Weaver loses his cool after Carlos Guillen hits a 7th-inning homer; he throws a pitch over the head of the next batter, Alex Avila, and is ejected. Verlander and the Tigers prevail, 3 - 2.

2014 - It is the Tigers who engineer the biggest blockbuster deal, however, as they pull CF Austin Jackson from their game with the White Sox in the middle of the 7th inning because he has just been traded to Seattle. They receive IF Nick Franklin in return, but immediately package him along with P Drew Smyly and SS prospect Willie Adames to Tampa Bay to reel in former Cy Young Award winner David Price.

Prior to this season, Ian Kinsler has either hit for power or had a high batting average. This year he?s doing both. A career .277 hitter who has hit 18 home runs annually, the 34-year-old Detroit second baseman is slashing .289/.342/.492 and has 20 long balls.

Is he a better hitter now than at any point in his career?

?Probably,? Kinsler told me. ?The game slows down more with the experience you get. You settle into the type of player you want to be, and the type of player you can be.?

A few days before my conversation with Kinsler, I talked to Twins second baseman Brian Dozier about his own evolution and self identity. (We?ll hear from Dozier in detail in the coming week.) When I told Kinsler that Dozier feels extra-base power makes him more valuable than a higher batting average, he shied away from approach-related assessments.

?I?m not worried so much about that, man,? said Kinsler. ?That?s probably a little too much in depth for me. I just want to score runs and hit the ball hard. I try to hit the ball on the barrel, and if you can do that, most of the time something good is going to happen.?

Kinsler ? a Texas Ranger prior to coming to Detroit three years ago ? does own up to having made some adjustments. His swing has ?flattened out a little? since his high power, low average seasons (2009 and 2011). He?s also more pleased with his overall approach. The way he sees it, ?Sometimes you have to take a couple steps back to be more of a complete hitter. Then, once you get comfortable with the changes you made, you can start adding more power.?

Jarrod Saltalamacchia explored uncharted territory this past week in Boston. The switch-hitting Detroit catcher opted to bat right-handed against righty knuckleballer Steven Wright. It was the first time in his career he?d gone right-on-right.

After the game, Saltalamacchia and manager Brad Ausmus (who made the suggestion) cited the Green Monster as the primarily reason for doing so. Saltalamacchia added that a lot of switch-hitters bat right-handed against knuckleballers. Even so, he hit left-handed the one time faced R.A. Dickey, and he?s historically been weaker from the right side. When I brought up his splits, he responded somewhat saltily.

?I?ve had rare at bats right-handed,? said Saltalamacchia, who began his answer with a thanks. ?When you get 60 at bats, your numbers are going to look like that. But I felt comfortable tonight and was able to put some at bats together.?

Saltamacchia had a pair of singles against Wright, and later stroked a third off lefty Tommy Layne. The latter also elicited a first. He?d never before totaled three hits from the right side in the same game.
