Miguel Cabrera not starting tonight against Royals.

Miguel Cabrera is apparently going to get a day off after straining his left biceps muscle Monday.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is playing first base and hitting seventh for the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday's game against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park (7:10 p.m., FSD).

Cabrera is considered day-to-day with the injury, though general manager Al Avila hinted earlier today on MLB Network the All-Star slugger would likely require a day off before returning.

Casey McGehee is starting at third base and hitting second, with Dixon Machado at shortstop and hitting eighth. Center fielder Tyler Collins has been jettisoned down the lineup to ninth against lefty Danny Duffy.

Miguel Cabrera (biceps) out tonight for Tigers vs. Royals.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus ruled out a stint on the disabled list for first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who was injured during Monday's loss to the Royals. Said there has been "absolutely zero" discussion of that plan of action. In fact, Ausmus said he reported to the ballpark on Tuesday feeling much better and had to be talked out of playing. Maximum amount of time Ausmus expects him to miss? 2-3 days. "If this were the last week of the season, I promise you Miggy would be playing."

Jordan Zimmermann threw a 20-pitch bullpen session today. He'll throw another one Thursday, then hopes to pitch in simulated game Sunday.
Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, who is on the disabled list with a neck strain, threw off the mound today. 20 pitches. How did it go? "Feels good. Finally." Said team will take a much slower, more cautious approach vs. last time after rushing back too soon. Feeling much better about situation after visiting with physical therapist he used to work with while playing for Nats. She pinpointed some muscles that were contributing to the issue and identified how to help moving forward.

Jose Iglesias said he's feeling progress in strained hamstring. He has been running on anti-gravity treadmill last couple days.

Tigers haven't wanted V-Mart in field. No sign that has changed. Not likely to sign anyone for day-to-day injury.

Ausmus on Cabrera: he irritated it a few weeks ago, reaggrivated it on the play at 1B, he's legitimately day to day.

IS MICHAEL FULMER BASEBALL'S BEST ROOKIE?
Fulmer is 9-3 with a 2.43 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 111 innings pitched. He's the clear front-runner for AL Rookie of the Year and has been instrumental in the Tigers staying contenders this season, Jim Bowden writes. Best rookies. (EspnInsider)

Minor League catcher Scivicque also headed to Atlanta.

Tigers GM Al Avila said Aybar gives him what they feel is an upgrade at utility and another switch-hitting bat off bench.

Avila: "What we’ve been trying to do is upgrade in subtle areas. Now with all the injuries, we felt that we really needed to move it along."

Avila on Scivicque: "We felt in this deal, he was a fair ask."

Avila: "I don’t want to get into the money, but you can say that it’s pretty even." Braves also sent Tigers cash in Aybar trade.

A few salient facts to consider when evaluting whether Tigers trade acquisition Erick Aybar represents a true offensive "upgrade":
According to Fangraphs.com, he ranks last among qualified hitters in wRC+ (adjusted weighted runs created) and has also experienced a dramatic uptick in his strikeout rate.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, he is striking out at a rate of 16% this season, as compared to 10.5% from 2012-15.
And over last two seasons, his hard-hit rate is 8.4%, down from 15.5% from 2012-14. In short, striking out more and making hard contact a lot less.
