Big second half brings back old Verlander.
For a while, it looked like Justin Verlander's (RHP, DET) ace days were behind him. After a poor 2014, he missed a good chunk of time in 2015 with a strained triceps. And things didn't look good in early 2016...until a serious turn-around. What's coming in 2017?
Verlander makes a pretty solid play:
Even with a 4+ ERA in the first half, he had fine Command, driven by a boost in SwK. Those struggles were partly due to S% and hr/f.
A big swing in S% in the second half helped Verlander. xERA improved, but certainly not enough to support a 2.00 ERA.
But those second half improvements are certainly worth noting; in particular, a 1.5 mph boost to his fastball can't be ignored.
Now 34, Verlander could see some age-related decline. But driven by a reinvigorated fastball, his Control and Dominance remain strong. Bid with confidence on Verlander; if the struggles of the past few years depress his value, all the better.

Masahiro Tanaka leads Yankees to combined no-hitter in 3-0 win over Tigers.
Mlive

In three appearances against the Tigers, Tanaka has pitched 10 1/3 hitless innings, striking out 15 and walking just two.
The Tigers are 0-4 against the Yankees this spring training, and have been outscored 30-7.
The Tigers had been no-hit three times prior today, according to research by the Detroit News.
The previous times were in 2009 by the Marlins (Ricky Nolasco and others),
1973 by the Royals (Steve Busby and Doug Bird)
and 1960 by the Pirates (Bennie Daniels, Jim Umbrecht).

March 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1942 - Two black players, Jackie Robinson and Nate Moreland, request a tryout with the Chicago White Sox during spring training in Pasadena, California. Sox manager Jimmie Dykes allows the two to work out but later dismisses them. Robinson will have to wait five years before making his major league debut.

1985 - Commissioner Peter Ueberroth reinstates Hall of Fame members Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, who had been banned from association with organized baseball by former commissioner Bowie Kuhn due to their employment by Atlantic City casinos. Ueberroth's ruling will allow both men to pursue employment with major league teams.

1990 - Major league players and owners reach a new collective bargaining agreement that will end the 32-day lockout of spring training camps. Highlights of the deal include increasing the clubs' contributions to the players' pension fund, raising the major league minimum salary to $100,000, and a compromise on salary arbitration that leaves 17 percent of players with between two and three years of major league experience eligible.
