Mlive

Noteable:
Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez is expected to be activated off the disabled list and make his season debut tonight.

Angels outfielder Mike Trout was 0 for 4 Thursday night, snapping a 17-game hitting streak.

Zimmermann is making his seventh start of the season. He allowed four runs ? including three home runs ? in five innings in his last start against Oakland.

Zimmermann has allowed eight home runs this season which is tied for the fifth-most in the American League. Shoemaker has allowed nine home runs.

Zimmermann?s only other start against the Angels was in 2011. He allowed one run ? unearned ? on four hits in eight innings. Albert Pujols has four hits, including two home runs, in eight plate appearances against Zimmermann. Andrelton Simmons is hitting .200 off him (6 for 30), while Cameron Maybin is batting .182 (4 for 22).

Shoemaker, a Trenton high school and Eastern Michigan alumnus, is making his eighth start of the season. He has allowed eight earned runs in 11 1/3 innings over his past two starts.

Shoemaker has dominated the Tigers in his career.
He is 2-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four career starts, which spans 26 2/3 innings.
Detroit averages against Shoemaker are not pretty:
Miguel Cabrera .154 (2 for 13),
Ian Kinsler .231 (3 for 13),
Victor Martinez .222 (2 for 9),
Justin Upton .167 (1 for 6).

Angels 7, Tigers 0: Errors in the outfield.
Without Michael Fulmer on the mound, the Tigers fell into familiar bad habits in Anaheim.

Zimmermann not shaken by rough outing.
Tigers starter feels good, despite giving up five runs in 5 1/3 vs. Halos.

May 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers hits his first grand slam. After six innings, Detroit leads the Boston Red Sox, 10 - 1. Boston comes back to win the game, 13 - 11 in 10 innings.

1939: The St. Louis Browns traded Beau Bell, Red Kress, Bobo Newsom and Jim Walkup to the Detroit Tigers for Mark Christman, George Gill, Bob Harris, Vern Kennedy, Chet Laabs and Roxie Lawson.

1953: The Chicago Cubs purchased George Freese from the Detroit Tigers.

1955: At Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle hits home runs from both sides of the plate for the first time in his major league career. The New York Yankees slugger finishes the game with three home runs - two left-handed and one right-handed - and drives in all of his team's runs in a 5 - 2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Whitey Ford is the winning pitcher and Steve Gromek the loser.

1958: Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals collects his 3,000th career hit with a pinch double off Chicago Cubs pitcher Moe Drabowsky at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals win.

1993: George Brett of the Kansas City Royals hits his 300th career home run in the 6th inning of a 7 - 3 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Brett is only the 6th major league player with at least 3,000 hits and 300 home runs.

2008: The Detroit Tigers released Jacque Jones.

2011: Justin Verlander does his best Johnny Vander Meer imitation in his first start since pitching the second no-hitter of his career on May 8th, but comes up short. The Tigers ace is still masterful, though, keeping the Royals hitless until Melky Cabrera's two-out triple in the 6th. He ends up allowing two hits in 8 innings in a 3 - 1 win.
