18. TIGERS: Alex Faedo, RHP, Florida
The nephew of 1978 first-round pick and ex-big leaguer Len Faedo, Alex Faedo played at Tampa’s Alonso High for his uncle. An unsigned 40th-round pick in 2014, he became an instant rotation member at Florida, pitching ahead of A.J. Puk in the rotation by the end of 2016 and finishing the summer as the No. 1 prospect on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. At that time, all three of his pitches–fastball, slider, changeup–earned plus grades from some scouts. Faedo had minor surgery on both knees in the fall, affecting his conditioning and offseason routine, and hadn’t quite gotten rolling for much of the spring as the calendar turned to May. At its best, Faedo’s slider rivals that of North Carolina’s J.B. Bukauskas, though it has a bit less power in the 83-84 mph range. He manipulates the pitch’s shape well and can locate it for strikes or as a chase pitch, though at times he gets too cute and throws too many sliders. Faedo’s fastball velocity has tended to be average at 88-92 mph this spring, but he’s pitched in the 92-94 register in the past, and he fills up the strike zone with his heater despite it having plus life. He can sink it and cut it, and at times his changeup has similar sinking life and run. Faedo’s longer arm action gives scouts some pause but hasn’t impeded his feel for the strike zone, and he has plenty of track record for clubs picking high to rely on.

Alex Faedo, RHP, Univ. of Florida
Ht/Wt: 6’5”/220 B/T: R/R Age (as of 2017 MLB Draft): 21y, 7m.
Following an outstanding sophomore season that continued into the summer with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, Faedo looked like a potential 1:1 candidate. After missing some time in the fall with arthroscopic surgery to both knees, Faedo took some time to get rolling this Spring as his fastball velocity backed up a tick and his control also took a hit. Despite the occasional struggles, Faedo has also flashed dominance over the past few months, logging nine starts in which he’s allowed one or fewer earned runs.
There’s some projection remaining Faedo’s frame, with room to fill out and firm up a body capable of eating innings at the professional level. With an above-average fastball that sits in the 91-to-93 mph range, a hard-biting plus slider that registers as one of the better pitches in the entire draft class, and a seldom used changeup that can flash above-average, Faedo provides an attractive target for teams looking for a collegiate arm that can offer upside and a solid track record. He should be selected relatively early on Day One and is a lock to go in the top 50 picks.

June 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1905: Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitches his second career no-hitter, beating the Chicago Cubs and Mordecai Brown, 1 - 0. Mathewson and Three Finger Brown match no-hitters for eight innings. The Giants get two hits in the 9th for the win, and a pair of errors committed by Bill Dahlen at shortstop prevent Mathewson from hurling a perfect game.

1912: Christy Mathewson reaches his 300th career victory as the New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 3 - 2. During his 17-year major league career, Mathewson will compile a 373-188 record.

1921: Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees hits a 460-foot home run into the center field bleachers in the Polo Grounds, for the first home run ever hit to that spot. Ruth adds his 21st home run of the season and also pitches five innings in the 13 - 6 win over the Detroit Tigers, giving up four runs, but striking out Ty Cobb. In tomorrow's game, Ruth will hit two more home runs, his sixth and seventh in five games, in a 9 - 6 win over Detroit.

1932: The Detroit Tigers traded Dale Alexander and Roy Johnson to the Boston Red Sox for Earl Webb.

1948: An ailing Babe Ruth makes his final appearance at Yankee Stadium. With the crowd of 49,641 singing Auld Lang Syne, and members of the 1923 Yankees team (the first to play in the stadium) looking on, the New York Yankees retire Ruth's uniform number 3 during ceremonies that also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stadium. Fewer than two months later, the 53-year-old Ruth will die from throat cancer.

1957: Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hits three home runs with five runs batted in as Boston beats the Indians, 9 - 3, at Cleveland Stadium. Williams, who had a three-homer game earlier in the year, becomes the first American League player to collect two such games in a single season.

1959: The Detroit Tigers selected Bob Smith off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1962: The Detroit Tigers signed Tom Fletcher as an amateur free agent.

1990: The Detroit Tigers signed John Shelby as a free agent.

2001: The Oakland Athletics selected Billy McMillon off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Fernando Seguignol as a free agent.

2012: The Detroit Tigers signed Cesar Carrillo as a free agent.
