June 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: At Bennett Park: The Tigers overcome a 12-run deficit, rallying to beat the Chicago White Sox, 16-15, after trailing, 13-1, in the fifth inning. Ty Cobb has 5 hits, including game-tying RBI infield single.

1922: Tigers outfielder Harry Heilmann collects his 10th consecutive hit in a game against the Boston Red Sox at Navin Field in Detroit. Heilmann goes 4-for-4 for the second straight night as the Tigers defeat the Sox, 8-1. The 10 straight hits are one shy of Tris Speaker’s major league record.

1938: Babe Ruth signs a contract to coach with the Brooklyn Dodgers. "The Babe" dons a Dodger uniform the next day, entertains observers with a batting demonstration, and works the third-base coaching box.

1987: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ron Meridith from the Texas Rangers.

1990: The Detroit Tigers traded Tracy Jones to the Seattle Mariners for Darnell Coles.

1994: The Detroit Tigers signed Francisco Cordero as an amateur free agent.

1995: At Tiger Stadium: Detroit beats Baltimore 10-8, giving Sparky Anderson the 2,158th managerial win of his career, placing him third behind Connie Mack and John McGraw.

1996: The San Diego Padres traded Russ Spear (minors), Brad Ausmus and Andujar Cedeno to the Detroit Tigers for John Flaherty and Chris Gomez.

2006: The Tigers hit a franchise record eight home runs in their 12-3 rout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Brandon Inge and Chris Shelton each hit two, and Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen, Marcus Thames, and Vance Wilson each hit one. The win keeps Detroit 1 ? games ahead in the American League Central.

2010: The Tigers extend their win streak to 7 games with a 7 - 5 win over the Diamondbacks. Brandon Inge delivers the key hit with an RBI triple in the 8th.

2011: The Detroit Tigers signed Jeff Salazar as a free agent.

Michael Fulmer healthy but unsatisfied after loss to Rays.

Are the Players fed up with Ausmus??

Fulmer wasn't the only one frustrated in that pivotal seventh inning.

With two outs, Miguel Cabrera became visibly agitated at Fulmer's repeated throws to first base, gesturing toward the plate and slapping his glove as if to say, "Throw the ball."
He directed most of his glare to the Tigers dugout, where Ausmus was calling for the pick-off attempts.

Ausmus said he didn't notice Cabrera's protestations, but he correctly pointed out that it was a prime base-stealing opportunity for the Rays, who had the No. 9 hitter up with two outs.

"If I feel they might run, I am going to throw over. That's my call," Ausmus said. "I didn't notice (Cabrera) but quite frankly, I don't care about it."

I recently asked Brad Ausmus if the type of questions he fields has changed in recent years, given the increased emphasis on analytics. His response was a little out of left field.

?With the explosion of Twitter, you get more intelligent, and invasive, questions,? opined the catcher-turned-manager. ?Now, a lot of people in the media use Twitter as a source, to figure out what their questions are.?

Later on in the media session, another reporter asked Ausmus about the high number of foul balls Justin Verlander had been allowing in recent games (Twitter?s role in that question is unknown).

?We?ve been kind of diving into that,? answered Ausmus. ?We?re looking at if anything stands out, but we haven?t come up with anything concrete. We?re comparing to previous seasons in terms of usage, break, spin rate, velocity. We?re comparing it to himself over the last few years, and we?re comparing across the league. Stuff like that.?

Ausmus added that he has a theory, but was keeping it to himself until he ?can put it to the test.? Asked how he could go about doing so, Ausmus joked that he?d ?test it out on lab rats first.? My suggestion that he was referring to Double-A pitchers elicited a response of, ?That?s not fair.?

It is said that Tigers don?t change their stripes, and in Nicholas Castellanos?s case, that means he?s going to stay aggressive. When I asked the Detroit Tigers third baseman about his free-swinging ways, he told me he?s ?never even thought about changing.? He added that he?s ?always just been (himself).?

So far this season, that ?self? is half Jekyll, half Hyde. Castellanos boasts a 49.7% hard-contact rate, which is bested by only Miguel Sano among qualified hitters. Conversely, he has a 35.1% 0-Swing rate, and a 25.8% strikeout rate. Castellanos will take a walk ? he?s an acceptable 7.9% on the year ? but he?s clearly prone to chasing.

It bothers him far less than it does most Tigers fans.

?Sometimes I?ll swing and the pitch will be out of the zone,? acknowledged Castellanos. ?And sometimes it?s out of the zone and I hit it. That double I hit off of Chris Sale last night wasn?t exactly in the zone. Before we came here, I hit a home run off of JC Ramirez on a pitch that was above, and out of the, zone. I?m just ready to hit, man. If I swing and miss, I swing and miss. Then I get ready to hit the next pitch.?

Anibal Sanchez to start for Tigers on Monday for some reason.
There is no statistical reason for Sanchez to be back in the majors, but he will be starting against Seattle anyway.

Sanchez has spent the past few weeks a Triple-A Toledo, where in four starts he has an 0-2 record, a 4.60 ERA, an a 1.40 WHIP.
Since the start of the 2015 season, his WHIP is 1.412, and he's allowed 68 home runs in 331.1 innings.
