July 2 in Tigers and mlb history:

1888: The Detroit Wolverines signed Deacon McGuire as a free agent.

1911: Detroit pounds out a 14 - 6 victory over Cleveland as Ty Cobb, hitting in his 40th straight game, has three hits and three runs.
Cobb collects 80 hits and bats .476 during his streak, which started on May 15.

1933: Carl Hubbell pitches an entire 18-inning shutout for the Giants over the Cardinals to tie a record for the longest 1 - 0 game. He strikes out 12 and walks none, allowing only six hits in a duel with Tex Carleton, who goes the first 16 innings. In game 2, played in semi-darkness, Roy Parmelee wins 1 - 0, on a Johnny Vergez home run. The notoriously wild Giants pitcher does not issue a walk and strikes out 13.

1950: Indian great Bob Feller wins his 200th major league game, 5 - 3, over Detroit in the second game of a doubleheader split. Detroit wins the opener, 8 - 5, for their only win in the four-game series.

1956: NBC pays $16.25 million for the Television and radio rights to the All-Star Game and the World Series. The players' pension fund will get 60 percent of the revenues.

1963: In one of baseball's most memorable pitching duels, the Giants' Juan Marichal and the Braves' Warren Spahn both hurl 15 scoreless innings before Willie Mays ends the marathon with a homer off Spahnie in the bottom of the 16th, giving San Francisco a 1- 0 win.

1966: The Detroit Tigers signed Tim Hosley as an amateur free agent.

1970: Detroit's Joe Niekro no-hits the Yankees until Horace Clarke singles in the 9th inning. The Tigers win, 5 - 0. This is the third time in the month that Clarke has broken up a no-hitter, having spoiled bids by Kansas City's Jim Rooker (June 4th) and Boston's Sonny Siebert (June 19th).

1973: The Detroit Tigers signed Ron LeFlore as an amateur free agent.

1999: The Florida Marlins signed Miguel Cabrera as an amateur free agent.

2000: The Detroit Tigers signed Mark Johnson as a free agent.

2002: The Tigers and White Sox tie their own major league record by hitting a combined 12 homers. Each team slugs six homers, with Robert Fick, Dmitri Young (2), Damion Easley, George Lombard, and Wendell Magee going deep for Detroit in Chicago?s Comiskey Park. The White Sox come out on top in the slugfest, 17-9.

2003: The Detroit Tigers released Ron Wright.

2007: The Detroit Tigers signed Hernan Perez as an amateur free agent.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Dixon Machado as an amateur free agent.

2015: The Detroit Tigers signed Trayvon Robinson as a free agent.

Tigers, Indians preview: Justin Verlander will try to take series from Tribe.
Mlive

Notable:
Nicholas Castellanos had three hits in the first game on Saturday and added a double in the second. He's now hitting .400 (14-for-35) over his last 10 games and leads the league with five triples.

In 20 games since June 1, Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook is hitting .356 (12-for-59) with six runs scored, three doubles, a triple and two home runs.

Justin Verlander has faced the Indians twice this year. The first outing, on April 15 in Cleveland, was one of the worst starts of his career (nine runs on 11 hits in four innings), but he pitched better on May 2 at Comerica (two runs on four hits in seven innings).

Huge FuckFace Carlos Santana has hit more home runs against Verlander (eight) than any other player. Jim Thome is next with seven.

Three things to watch for in this game:
Clevinger's three secondary pitches have given the opposition fits. His slider, changeup and curveball have combined to allow a .146 batting average (14-for-96) and a 26.3 percent whiff rate, according to Statcast.

No team has seen Verlander more than the Indians (50 career starts), but they've had his number lately. Since 2014, Verlander is 3-8 with a 5.26 ERA in 15 starts against Cleveland.

No one on the Tigers has had more than three plate appearances against Clevinger, but Miguel Cabrera did plenty of damage in their brief encounter. Cabrera is 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and five RBIs against the right-hander.

Alex Avila should represent the Detroit Tigers in this year?s All-Star game. The 30-year-old catcher leads his club in batting average, OPS, wOBA, wRC+, and WAR. His slash line is an eye-opening .315/.431/.586.

Avila is also a contender for Comeback Player of the Year honors. Hampered by injuries ? concussions have been especially troublesome ? he?s hovered around the Mendoza line each of the past two years. When I asked why he?s having a standout season, he said health is probably the biggest reason.

His swing hasn?t changed, nor has his basic approach. The latter has long been a strong suit, and that?s especially true this year ? his 12.5 O-Swing% is the lowest in either league. Avila knows what he wants. He focuses on a specific area of the plate, and if the pitch is there, he lets fly. If it?s not ? assuming he doesn?t have a two-strike count ? he leaves the bat on his shoulder.

?You have to know your strengths,? explained Avila. ?The pitcher is going to try to pitch to your weaknesses, but they?ll make mistakes. The key is to be able to capitalize when they do. What you want is a pitch you can handle well, one you can drive.?

Avila feels his strengths have remained fairly static. Along with being patient, he?s displayed an ability to hit the ball to the opposite field with authority, and also turn on inside pitches. His ground balls tend to be pull side, which plays into the one notable change he?s made to his attack plan.

?There were times I would try to manipulate the ball,? admitted Avila. ?I would try to hit it away from the shift, and too often that causes weak contact. This year, whether a team is shifting me or not? I couldn?t care less. I?m just trying to hit the ball hard. If I hit it at the guy who is playing in short right field, so be it.?

As the saying goes, it?s hard to argue with results.

VERLANDER'S K STREAK GOES DOWN LOOKING.
April 28, 2007? Justin Verlander failed to strike out a batter in his 37th big league start, going only three innings vs. the Twins. He then fanned at least one batter in every appearance until Sunday afternoon, when he went only 3 1/3 innings against the Indians.
