August 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: A's pitcher Jack Coombs hits the last ever home run at Bennett Park, in the top of the 11th inning. Coombs then surrenders the lead in the bottom of the 11th and the Tigers win 9-8. Coombs spent his last season with the #Tigers in 1920.

1915: George Sisler again pitches against Walter Johnson and this time wins, 2 - 1. He will be 4-4 for the Browns and 1-2 next year before moving permanently to 1B.

1925: After a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice. Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. In the showdown between the Bambino and the tiny manager, Jake Ruppert backs up his manager. Ruth is forced to apologize before he's reinstated nine days later. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth will hit home run number 300.

1925: The city of Detroit gives a dinner for Ty Cobb honoring his 20 years in a Tiger uniform. He's given a trophy by the city and $10,000 by the club.

1931: Lefty Grove fans the side in the 1st inning, hands out a walk to Lou Gehrig to start the 2nd, and records three more K's. Lefty has two K's in the 3rd but develops a blister from gripping the ball. Gehrig knocks Grove out of the box with a 6th-inning grand slam, but the A's lefty still wins, 7 - 4. Lou now has 142 RBIs. Jimmie Foxx knocks in five runs for the A's.

1932: Detroit C Ray Hayworth makes his first error of the season after handling 439 chances without a miscue dating back to September 2, 1931.

1934: A capacity crowd at Shibe Park sees Detroit's Schoolboy Rowe fail to win his 17th straight. He is knocked from the box in the 7th inning of the second-game, 13 - 5, loss to Philadelphia.

1937: The A's set a new American League record in the opener of a doubleheader with the White Sox by scoring 12 runs in the 1st inning, six of which are driven in by Bob Johnson.

1943: Rudy York hits 2 home runs, one in each game of a doubleheader sweep of the browns to reach 17 for the month, one shy of his 1937 record.

1945: The Detroit Tigers released both Dixie Parsons and Jackie Sullivan.

1947: In St. Louis, Fred Hutchinson does it all for Detroit, whipping the Browns, 5 - 4. After tripling against Ellis Kinder in the 3rd, Hutch takes advantage of the pitcher's big windup to swipe home. He also adds a single.

1951: The Yankees pick on the lowly Browns for a 15 - 2 win at Sportsman's Park. Mickey Mantle has four RBIs including a three-run homer in the 9th off Satchel Paige. Ned Garver is the loser.

1951: At Ebbets Field, the Dodgers roll to a 13 - 1 win over the Reds behind Don Newcombe. Gil Hodges drives in seven runs and hits his 35th and 36th homers to tie Ralph Kiner for the homer lead. He also sets a Dodger club record.

1959: Hamtramck, MI, wins the Little League World Series at Williamsport, PA.

1964: On Elston Howard Night, the Yankees take two from Boston, 10 - 2 and 6 - 1. Joe Pepitone's three home runs, including a grand slam, and Roger Maris's six singles lead the offense. Mickey Mantle hits home run number 447 in the opener and ties Babe Ruth's career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap.

1965: Giants centerfielder Willie Mays breaks former Pirate Ralph Kiner's record for home runs in the month of August when the "Say Hey Kid" connects for his 17th round tripper in an 8 - 3 victory over the Mets.

1966: Detroit's Denny McLain tosses 229 pitches, gives up eight hits, walks nine and strikes out 11 Orioles to record his 16th victory in a 6 - 3 Tigers win. Willie Horton hits two homeruns, and another homerun from Bill Freehan.

1967: Tigers sweep a doubleheader 4 - 2 and 2 - 1 against the Angels to cut Boston's lead to a half game in the American League.
Kaline with 3 walks and 2 runs scored as McLain wins his 17th in game 1, and Freehan with the 2 run homer in game 2.

1968: Denny McLain became the first American League pitcher to win 26 games since Bob Feller and Hal Newhouser both did it in 1946 as he pitched the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the California Angels. With Baltimore's 3-2 loss to the Senators, the Detroit AL lead is back to 5 games.

1970: Mickey Mantle returns to the Yankees as first base coach.

1977: At Fenway Park, Jim Rice clubs three homers - in the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th innings - but Boston loses to the Oakland A's, 8 - 7. Rice adds a single in the 4th. He is the first Bosox player to hit the hat trick since Norm Zauchin on May 27, 1955.

1984: Mark Langston throws a 2-hitter against the Tigers.
Sparky post game: "You don't feel too bad when you get beat like we did tonight. This kid just flat-out took it to us".

1986: The Detroit Tigers released Mike York.

1987: Nolan Ryan passes the 200-strikeout barrier for a major league-record 11th time, fanning seven Pirates in six innings of an 8 - 2 Astros loss.

1990: The Baltimore Orioles selected Brian Dubois off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1991: The White Sox's Carlton Fisk crashes two homers to become the oldest player in the 20th century to accomplish the mark. He'll top this by hitting two homers on October 3rd. Jack McDowell goes the distance to beat Cleveland, 7 - 2.

1993: Kansas City's George Brett steals a base in the Royals' 5 - 4 win over the Red Sox, making him only the 3rd player in history with 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and 200 stolen bases. Willie Mays and Hank Aaron are the others to accomplish the feat.

1995: The Detroit Tigers traded Kevin Wickander to the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later. The Milwaukee Brewers sent Derek Hacopian (minors) (September 12, 1995) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2016: Miguel Cabrera reaches 1,003 RBIs as a Tiger with a sac fly, tying Alan Trammell for 10th in franchise history. Tigers beat the White Sox 4-3 on a go-ahead 2-run home run in the 8th inning by Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

LABOR DAY DIARIES.
Totally Tigers

In honor of Labor Day weekend, we are offering up a special opportunity to share your stories. It?s time again to hear from our readers! If you have a story up your sleeve based on the selected topic, well, we would appreciate it if you shared it with all of us.

The comment parameters have been expanded so you can get those juices flowing.

Comments on THIS DAY ONLY can be expanded to a maximum of 8 sentences.

We can?t wait to get your thoughts on the following topic:

What was your most memorable interaction with a Tiger (player, owner or management)?

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire has helped oversee their extensive rebuilding effort since last year, and it?s likely he?ll helm the club?s dugout again next season. The soon-to-be 62-year-old Gardenhire?s ?in little to no jeopardy? of not returning in 2020 for the final season of his contract. Gardenhire, for his part, seems uninterested in going anywhere else. ?That?s to be determined for (general manager) Al Avila, with where they want to go and what they want to do, but I enjoy this and I love this city,? Gardenhire said of his future.
The Tigers have stumbled to a miserable 103-158 record under Gardenhire, but it would be unfair to judge him for that. Anyone would?ve been hard-pressed to guide last year?s roster or this season?s team to respectable marks.
