October 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: the Tigers win in St. Louis to clinch their first pennant in franchise history, closing it out by going 10-0-1 in their last 11 games.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DK0dHaDWkAM4xIz?format=jpg&name=900x900

1908: Chicago White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh tops the Detroit Tigers, 6 - 1, for his 40th victory and forces the American League pennant race to the final day. Detroit's 24-game winner Ed Summers takes the loss.
Walsh leads the league in games pitched (66), innings (464), strikeouts (269), complete games (42), saves (six), shutouts (11) and winning percentage (.727). His ERA is 1.42

1911: The National Commission sells motion picture rights to the World Series for $3,500. When the players demand a share of it, the Commission cancels the deal.

1912: The Boston Red Sox defeat the Philadelphia Athletics, 3 - 0, for their 105th win of the season, an American League record until the 1927 Yankees reach 110.

1915: In a loss to the Indians, Detroit Tigers speedster Ty Cobb steals his 96th base of the season. Cobb's 96 steals will stand as a major league record until 1962.

1921: New York is host to the first one-city World Series since 1906 and the Polo Grounds is the site for all nine games. Carl Mays of the Yankees needs 86 pitches to set the Giants down on five hits, four of them by Frankie Frisch, as Babe Ruth drives in the first run of the Series in the opening inning of the 3 - 0 Yankees win.

1926: In Game 3 of the World Series, Jesse Haines pitches a five-hit shutout as the Cardinals beat the Yankees, 4 - 0, to take a 2-1 lead in the Series.

1928: In the World Series, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees unloads a three-run home run in the 1st inning of Game 2. Grover Cleveland Alexander, the hero of the 1926 Series between the Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, is driven from the game in the 3rd inning as New York cruises, 9 - 3, to take a 2-1 Series lead.

1929: New York Giants Mel Ott and Chuck Klein of the Philadelphia Phillies go into a head-to-head doubleheader tied at 42 home runs apiece. In the opener, Klein homers for the Phillies off Carl Hubbell in his first at-bat to take the home run lead.
In the nightcap, Phillies pitchers intentionally walk Ott five times rather than give him a chance to tie Klein. The last walk comes with the bases loaded. Lefty O'Doul of the Phillies has six hits on the day for a National League season-record of 254 hits.

1935: Charlie Gehringer's RBI double lifts the Tigers to a 2-1 win at Wrigley Field and a commanding 3-1 lead in the World Series.

1941: In the World Series, Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Mickey Owen drops a third strike on Tommy Henrich in what would have been the final out of a Dodgers victory against the New York Yankees. Given a second chance, the Yankees then rally for a 7 - 4 win to take a 3-1 Series lead.

1945: Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs pitches a one-hitter, beating the Detroit Tigers 3 - 0 in Game Three of the World Series.

1947: Left fielder Al Gionfriddo makes a spectacular catch and robs Joe DiMaggio of a game-tying home run in Game 6 of the World Series. The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Yankees, 8 - 6.

1949: In Game 1 of the World Series, Allie Reynolds and Don Newcombe are locked in a scoreless duel in the bottom of the ninth inning, until Tommy Henrich leads off with a walk-off home run, the first in World Series history, and the Yankees beat the Dodgers, 1 - 0.

1952: In Game 5 of the World Series, Brooklyn wins 6 - 5 in 11 innings over the Yankees when Billy Cox scores the winning run behind an RBI double hit by Duke Snider. Carl Erskine pitches a complete game to give Brooklyn a 3-2 Series lead heading back to Ebbets Field.

1953: The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series. Billy Martin collects his 12th Series hit, a single to center field in the bottom of the 9th inning, that gives the Yankees their fifth World Championship in a row. Carl Furillo had tied it up in the top of the 9th with a two-run home run.

1954: Oscar Charleston, one of the greatest players in the history of the Negro Leagues, dies in Philadelphia, days after he had fallen down a flight of stairs. He was 57 years old.

1958: The Detroit Tigers purchased Pete Burnside from the San Francisco Giants.

1960: In a portent of things to come, Bill Mazeroski's two-run 5th-inning home run off Jim Coates is the difference as Pittsburgh beats the Yankees, 6 - 4, in its first World Series win since 1925.

1966: With 1st-inning home runs by Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson, and 11 strikeouts from relief pitcher Moe Drabowsky, the Baltimore Orioles win their first World Series game, 5 - 2, over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1967: Jim Lonborg of the Boston Red Sox pitches a one-hit, 5 - 0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals to tie the World Series, 1-1.

1968: Tim McCarver and Orlando Cepeda each hit three-run home runs to lead the Cardinals to a 7 - 3 win over Detroit.
The Cardinals quickly acclimated to Tiger Stadium, hitting a pair of three run HRs to beat the Tigers in Game 3 and take a 2 games to 1 lead. The Tigers are now looking at the prospect of having to beat Gibson or go down 3 games to 1.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLYtz0_WAAAh5PJ?format=jpg&name=medium

1981: The Detroit Tigers released Mark Fidrych. Due to injuries, he made only 27 appearances in four seasons after his magical rookie year in 1976.

1984: Pitchers Milt Wilcox and Willie Hernandez combine on a three-hitter to give the Detroit Tigers a 1 - 0 win and a sweep of the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS. The Tigers are going to the World Series!
Sparky: "The night belonged strictly to Milt Wilcox. Period. He showed exactly what guts and determination mean in this game".
There were 36 cases of champagne on hand and all the bottles were dry by the time the clubhouse had finally cleared.

1987: The Seattle Mariners traded Stan Clarke to the Detroit Tigers for Bruce Fields.

2002: The Anaheim Angels shock the New York Yankees by scoring eight runs in the 5th inning and going on to a 9 - 5 victory. The victory gives Anaheim its first postseason series victory ever, as they win their ALDS matchup, 3 games to 1. Shawn Wooten hits a home run for Anaheim while Jorge Posada adds a round-tripper for New York. Jarrod Washburn gets the victory for the Angels.

2004: Craig Dingman of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2004: John Ennis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2006: Tigers even the ALDS: Curtis Granderson's triple in the 7th inning of Game 2 drives home the winning run.

2010: Enrique Gonzalez of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2014: Both American League Division Series end in three-game sweeps. The Orioles defeat the Tigers, 2 - 1, behind the pitching of Bud Norris and a two-run homer from Nelson Cruz to finish one ALDS sweep,
and the Royals pound the Angels, 8 - 3, in the other ALDS. Alex Gordon hits a three-run double and Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas homer, while 'big shit' James Shields confirms the appropriateness of his nickname.

2017: The Detroit Tigers released Brett Pill.

2017: Jose Altuve has a gigantic game, hitting three homers, to lead the Astros to an 8 - 2 win over the Red Sox in Game 1 of their Division Series. Justin Verlander continues his excellent work since having been acquired in a trade on August 31st by notching the win with six solid innings of work, while Chris Sale is hit hard in getting saddled with the loss.

October 6 in Tigers and mlb history:

1908: Tigers beat the White Sox 7-0 on the final day of the season to clinch the pennant by a half game and head to their second straight World Series.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DK6ofB5XcAMUCv2.jpg

1926: Babe Ruth hits three home runs to lead the Yankees to a 10 - 5 victory over St. Louis in Game 4 of the World Series. His 1st-inning curtain-raiser is a majestic 395-footer, exiting Sportsman's Park over its right field bleacher roof. Home run number 2 clears the roof in right center, carrying 515 feet, breaking a window on the other side of Grand Avenue. Ruth's final foray, however, is the main attraction, carrying deep into the never-before reached centerfield bleachers, far beyond the 430-foot mark. Estimated at 530 feet, it is deemed the longest home run in World Series history.
Ruth, however, not content to dominate offensively, also delivers a crucial outfield assist, cutting down a runner at the plate, ending the Cardinals' 3rd-inning rally. In the words of broadcaster Graham McNamee, "Babe Ruth nor no other man ever made a better throw. Babe shot it like an arrow and Hank Severeid did not have to move for it."
If all this weren't enough, this also is the game during which the Babe makes good on his alleged pre-game promise to hit a home run for the bedridden young Johnny Sylvester.

1929: Tigers hit 3 triples in season finale, a loss to the white sox, and finish with 543 extra base hits, still a franchise record.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGDHdeCX0AEXYrj?format=jpg&name=360x360
Dale "Moose" Alexander hits a home run in the final game of his rookie season. Still holds Tigers rookie records for BA (.343), hits 215, and RBI 137.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CuF12HSWgAAhZ8l?format=jpg&name=900x900
Charlie Gehringer goes 2-for-5 with a double, finishes season with AL lead or tie in runs 131, hits 215, doubles 45, triples 19, and SBs 27.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CuF2gXMXgAAV5K-?format=jpg&name=small

1934: Tigers beat the Cardinals 10-4 in Game 4 to draw even in the World Series. Hank Greenberg goes 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and a stolen base.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGDInmbWwAAmEH5?format=jpg&name=medium

1940: At Briggs Stadium, Bobo Newsom beats Cincinnati 8-0, in Game 5 of the World Series as 55,189 look on.
Hank Greenberg hits a 3-run home run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLdiBkyUQAApSWP.png

1945: A goat and its owner make an appearance at Wrigley Field for Game 4 of the World Series. The pair is told to leave before the game ends, angering the owner. The Chicago Cubs lose to the Detroit Tigers, 4 - 1. Detroit will go on to win the Series in seven games and the Cubs won't win another National League championship for the rest of the 20th century. A belief that the Cubs were cursed by the goat will eventually develop.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGDJbpqWwAAo5AX?format=jpg&name=small

1948: In the opening game of the World Series, the Boston Braves beat Bob Feller and the Cleveland Indians, 1 - 0, with only two hits and the benefit of a disputed call on a pick-off attempt in the 8th inning by Feller.

1957: In Game 4 of the World Series, the Yankees are down, 4 - 1, with two outs in the top of the 9th when Elston Howard slugs a tying three-run homer off Warren Spahn of the Braves. The Yankees take the lead in the 10th on Hank Bauer’s triple off Spahn, and are about to go up 3-1 in the series, but Milwaukee rallies in controversial fashion.
Nippy Jones leads off the bottom of the 10th and takes Tommy Byrne’s low pitch for a ball, but he argues that the ball hit him on the foot. He shows home plate umpire Augie Donatelli a smudge of shoe polish on the ball, and Donatelli reverses his call. Two batters later, Johnny Logan ties the game with a double off Bob Grim, then Eddie Mathews blasts a walk-off two-run homer to tie the series, which the Braves will win in seven games.

1960: Giddy following their team's Game 1 win over the heavily favored Yankees, Pirate fans are in for a brutal reality check, as the Big Apple Goliath walks over Steeltown's David, 16 - 3, to even the World Series at one all. This utterly uncontested affair is little more than batting practice for the Bombers, highlighted by two tremendous opposite field blasts by Mickey Mantle, the latter of which, measured at 478 feet, proves historic – the first time within memory that any right-handed batter has hit a ball out of Forbes Field to the right of dead center.

1963: Frank Howard leads the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2 - 1 win over the New York Yankees with a home run and a single, giving the Dodgers a four-game sweep in the World Series.

1966: Jim Palmer, at age 20, becomes the youngest pitcher with a World Series shutout as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6 - 0. Sandy Koufax is the loser in his last appearance in the major leagues. Dodgers outfielder Willie Davis commits three errors on successive plays in the 5th inning.

1968: Bob Gibson and the Cardinals pound the Tigers 10-1 at #TigerStadium to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the World Series.

1971: The Detroit Tigers released Dean Chance.

1985: New York Yankees pitcher Phil Niekro becomes the 18th 300-game winner as he blanks the Toronto Blue Jays, 8 - 0, on the last day of the season. At age 46, Niekro also becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout in major league history; he will eventually be passed by Jamie Moyer on May 7, 2010.

1991: Tigers play the final game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and beat the orioles 7 - 1. Frank Tanana with the CG.

2001: Todd Helton becomes the first player in major league history to have consecutive seasons with 400 or more total bases. His 7th-inning double gives him exactly 400 bases this year.

2006: Tigers shut out the Yankees at Comerica Park to take a 2-1 lead in the ALDS. Kenny Rogers pitches 7+ shutout innings, Curtis Granderson hits a home run for the Tigers, who score 5 runs off Yankees starter Randy Johnson.

2009: Detroit loses, 6 - 5, to Minnesota in a one-game playoff to determine the winner of the AL Central title. Alexi Casilla singles home the winning run with one out in the 12th inning. The Tigers had led the division by 3 games with 4 to play, and were ahead by 7 games on September 6 before sputtering down the stretch. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera, under a swirl of controversy over allegations of impaired driving and domestic violence, hits an early home run to put Detroit ahead, but is thrown out at home by Nick Punto in the top half of the 12th. It is the last regular-season game to be played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

2009: Dane Sardinha of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2010: Casey Fien of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2011: The Detroit Tigers signed Sandy Baez as an amateur free agent.

2011: The Tigers eliminate the Yankees in the ALDS for the second time in five years, taking advantage of back-to-back 1st-inning homers by Don Kelly and Delmon Young off Ivan Nova, to win, 3 - 2, in the decisive Game Five. Nova is lifted in the 2nd inning, while Doug Fister and three relievers manage to quiet the Yankees' bats to make the lead hold. Closer Jose Valverde remains perfect for the season, picking up the save with a perfect 9th inning at New Yankee Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGDKsa-XkAAHWUI?format=jpg&name=medium

2012: In the first game of the ALDS, Justin Verlander of the Tigers gives up a home run to the first batter of the game, Coco Crisp, but goes on to strike out 11 over 7 innings, not giving up another run to the Athletics. The Tigers get the run back in the bottom of the 1st, take the lead with a 3rd-inning score, and complete the tally when C Alex Avila homers off Jarrod Parker in the 5th for a 3 - 1 win.

2014: Danny Worth of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2015: The Astros open the 2015 Postseason by defeating the Yankees, 3 - 0 in the American League Wild Card Game. Dallas Keuchel pitches 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and a walk while striking out 7, while his opponent, Masahiro Tanaka, allows a pair of solo homers and is charged with the loss.

2017: The NLDS game between the Cubs and the Nationals is a true pitchers' duel between Kyle Hendricks and Stephen Strasburg. Chicago does not get its first hit until 2 are out in the top of the 6th, by Kris Bryant, but it scores Javier Baez who had reached on an error by 3B Anthony Rendon. Bryant takes second on the throw from the outfield and scores on Anthony Rizzo's single, and those two unearned runs are all Chicago needs, as they go on to win 3 - 0 and Washington only manages 2 hits.

Ron Gardenhire wasn?t exactly a happy camper when I visited Detroit in the penultimate weekend of the regular season. It?s hard to blame him. Affability has its limits when the squad you?re skippering is wet behind the ears and barely a step above abysmal. The Tigers finished with 114 losses, and a lion?s share of them weren?t particularly pretty. Their minus-333 run differential was by far the worst in either league.

One day after a 10-1 loss to the White Sox that included three Tigers errors, the beleaguered manager was asked about his team?s effort level.

?I don?t know that it was [lack of] effort, it was just so many mistakes,? answered Gardenhire. ?We were throwing the ball? snowball fights aren?t good in baseball, and we had one last night. The ball was flying all over the place. We have to control the baseball, and we didn?t? We were really sloppy.?

Among the miscues sticking in Gardenhire?s craw that afternoon was 22-year-old infielder Willi Castro, who?d been called up barely a month earlier, not having displayed good footwork on a double play opportunity with the Tigers employing a shift.

?I know they don?t play as many shifts in the minor leagues, [but] why are we having to teach it up here?,? Gardenhire said. ?I want that taught down there, so when they get up here they know how to do it.?

Gardenhire tempered that statement by saying it?s harder to employ shifts in the minors, as there isn?t as much data on hitters, and ?Pitchers down there can?t throw to the spots.?

A uneasy exchange followed when I asked if the Tigers should nevertheless shift more often in the minors.

?Did you hear what I just said?,? retorted Gardenhire. ?If you can?t throw to a spot, how do you shift??

Fair enough. But the primary purpose of the minors is development, and hadn?t the veteran manager just bemoaned the need to teach at the big-league level?

?They do work on it down there,? Gardenhire countered. ?They work on everything. But during the course of a game, I don?t know how many shifts they?re [employing]. But these players are learning to play in shifts.?

Per Baseball Savant, the Tigers shifted 1,833 times this past season, the 11th-highest total in MLB. As for the extent to which they did so with pitchers consistently hitting their spots, and with infielders adequately practiced in the art and science of shifting? that was almost assuredly suboptimal. I doubt that Gardenhire would disagree.
