Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

December 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: Future Hall of Fame catcher Josh Gibson is born in Buena Vista, Georgia. Although record-keeping in the Negro Leagues is somewhat nebulous, Gibson will become the leading home run hitter in all of black baseball. His legendary power will earn him the nickname, "The Black Babe Ruth." Gibson wil begin his pro career at age 18 with the Homestead Grays before becoming a star with the Pittsburgh Crawfords.

1944: Official National League statistics published today show Brooklyn's Dixie Walker at the top of the hitters with a .357 batting average, ahead of Stan Musial at .347. In an even closer vote than occurred in the American League, the National League Most Valuable Player Award goes to fielding wizard shortstop Marty Marion of the Cardinals, who tallies one more vote than Cubs slugger Bill Nicholson (189). The Cardinals committed only 112 errors and fielded .982, both better than previous records held by the 1940 Cincinnati Reds. Marion is the third different Cardinals player in three years to win MVP honors.

1960: Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley announces the club will not have a manager for the next season, but will instead use a college of coaches, who will take turns managing the ballclub. The original eight coaches include Charlie Grimm, Ripper Collins and Rube Walker. Before the season is over, Vedie Himsl, Harry Craft, El Tappe and Lou Klein will have taken turns leading the team. The results will be disastrous for the Cubs, who will finish the season 35 games out of first place, but the experiment will be repeated in 1962 before being shelved for good.

1981: The Philadelphia Phillies sign future Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt to a six-year contract worth $1.2 million per season. During the strike-shortened 1981 season, Schmidt led the National League in home runs (31), RBI (91) and runs (78).

1982: All-Star first baseman Steve Garvey signs a free agent five-year contract with the San Diego Padres. Garvey leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers after 14 seasons.

1995: Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1997: Bob Hamelin of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1998: Comerica Bank buys the naming rights for the Tigers' new ballpark.
Owner Mike Illitch initially favored the name "Tigers Park." Comerica provided 66 million reasons to reconsider.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DupXK_VWoAgiCCb.jpg

1999: The Dodgers are fined $50,000 and banned from scouting any Dominican Republic players for one year as a penalty for having signed third baseman Adrian Beltre as a 15-year-old. Beltre is not given his free agency, according to Commissioner Bud Selig, because he participated in the scheme, and because the claim for free agency was made too late. The players association is expected to file a grievance in the matter, but the ruling will stand.

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Jacob Cruz as a free agent.

2002: Robert Fick of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2002: Julio Santana of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: Ben Petrick of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2003: Andy Van Hekken of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: Eric Munson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2009: The San Diego Padres purchased Dusty Ryan from the Detroit Tigers.

2015: The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased Kyle Lobstein from the Detroit Tigers.

2018: The Dodgers pull off a big trade with the Reds, sending four major leaguers - OFs Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp, P Alex Wood and C Kyle Farmer, in return for P Homer Bailey and prospects Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs. The main purpose of the trade for L.A. appears to be to clear roster and salary space in order to sign free agent OF Bryce Harper, as they release Bailey immediately after acquiring him, buying off $28 million he is still owed on his contract.

2018: The Associated Press reports that the average salary in the major leagues went down last season, for the first time since 2004, albeit by a very small amount, according to data provided by the Players Association. The typical player took home $4.095 million, down from $4.097 million the year before. The other times salaries had failed to rise were during collusion in the mid-1980s and after the devastating 1994 strike. In 2018, teams had been notably reticent to offer salaries to free agents, with a huge number being still unsigned when spring training opened and many forced to accept salaries below their previous market value.

2019: The Tigers, Owners of the worst record and the most anemic line-up in the majors last season, add a couple of power hitters on one-year free agent deals, both for $6.1 million. The similarities don't end there as 1B C.J. Cron and 2B Jonathan Schoop were both with the Twins last season, and put up very similar numbers: Cron hit .253 with 25 homers in 125 games, and Schoop .256 with 23 homers in 121 games.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers another way for readers to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin? peeps.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons ( 4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

After absorbing Al Avila?s quote about "building it back up," what does it mean?

1. The franchise will look to acquire players who may cost a little more but will stay beyond a year.

2. The Tigers will field a more competitive team in 2020.

3. It is meant only to give hope. They will continue to sign journeymen to 1-year/minor league deals.

4. I don't know.

5. Other.

Vote.

To clear roster space for the Schoop and Cron signings, 1B Brandon Dixon has been designated for assignment. The 40-man roster is now full.

Cron ends up getting a raise from the Tigers, though still coming in under his projected arbitration mark.

While Cron and Schoop aren?t superstars, they are exactly the kind of free agent signings that the Tigers figured to be interested in making this offseason. We know the team won?t be ready to contend in 2020, but after winning just
47 games in 2019 they needed to make some additions that will at least make them marginally better.

It?s also possible that the Tigers could flip one or both of these players for prospects at the trade deadline should they have good first halves.
In any case, give credit to the Tigers? front office credit for trying to make the roster more competitive for 2020. It will be interesting to see if any additional moves follow, particularly for the outfield.

Why the Detroit Tigers' latest signings are just what the lineup needed: Plenty of power.
Freep

In Cron and Schoop, the Tigers think they know a bit about what they?re getting. Both players are basically known commodities ? though Schoop, a 2017 All-Star, still has some potential ? and fill the Tigers' big needs at the plate and by position.

They came with higher price tags than last year's free-agent additions, but the Tigers are still fishing the shallow end of the free-agent pool. Last offseason's marquee signings ? second baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer ? also came with a promise of consistent performance. Instead, the duo spent most of 2019 injured.

Still, true to general manager Al Avila?s word at this year?s winter meetings, the Tigers have spent more money than in winters past:
The signings of Cron, Schoop and catcher Austin Romine came with a $16.3 million price tag this winter.
Harrison, Mercer, right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross and lefty Matt Moore totaled $15.75 million last winter.

The Tigers likely aren't done spending either, with possible bargains on pitching upgrades looming during the holiday season.

1899: The fledging American League owners meet to map a strategy against the established National League. They agree to place a team in Chicago with Charles Comiskey as the owner-manager of the franchise.

1915: Organized Baseball and the Federal League sign a peace treaty at Cincinnati, ending their two-year war. The FL agrees to go out of existence, but the Major Leagues pay an enormous price: $600,000 for distribution to FL owners; amalgamation of two FL franchises, one each into National League and American League; recognition of FL players' eligibility, and agreement to bid for them in a Fed-controlled auction.
The owners of the Baltimore Terrapins, hoping to get the Cardinals, balk, but conferees, eager for settlement, defer their claims - a decision they will repent at leisure when the Baltimore owners take their grievance all the way to the Supreme Court.

1926: Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker both deny they conspired to fix a baseball game several years ago.

1953: Jack Dunn III officially turns over the name "Orioles" to the major league franchise. His family had successfully operated the International League Orioles franchise for years in Baltimore, Maryland.

1980: The Boston Red Sox mail Fred Lynn and Carlton Fisk their new contracts two days after the Basic Agreement's December 20 deadline. Boston's blunder make their All-Stars eligible for free agency.

1994: Cincinnati signs free agent Jack Morris. He never throws a pitch for the Reds.

1994: Negotiations between the players’ union and baseball owners break down with no progress. The strike goes on.

1995: Anheuser-Busch agrees to sell the St. Louis Cardinals for $150 million to an investment group that agrees to keep the team in St. Louis.

1997: The Detroit Tigers signed Joe Oliver as a free agent.
1997: The Detroit Tigers signed Andy Tomberlin as a free agent.

1998: Comerica Bank announces that it has spent $66 million to have its name on the new home of the Detroit Tigers. Comerica Park. Mike Illitch reportedly wanted to call it "Tiger Park".

2005: Detroit signs free agent reliever Todd Jones, who returns to the team he’d first been a closer for.

2006: The Detroit Tigers signed Bobby Seay as a free agent.

December 23 in Tigers and mlb history:

1913: The Sporting News reports that 15 men died from baseball injuries during the 1913 season, according to a list compiled by J.R. Vickery of Chicago. The only name given is that of J. Whetstone of New Orleans, who suffered "a broken spine sustained in sliding to a base"; all other fatalities were the result of foul tips or pitched balls. The list "does not include a major league player or even a minor league athlete of sufficient experience to be widely known.

1919: The New York Times looks back at the year's batting stats with this stop-the-presses headline: "Ty Cobb And Ruth Excel In Batting".
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DQSjlKtWkAAbdrD.jpg:large

1953: Junior Gilliam of the Brooklyn Dodgers is named National League Rookie of the Year. Gilliam, who led the National League with 17 triples, beats out Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Harvey Haddix.

1958: The Philadelphia Phillies traded Jim Golden, Rip Repulski and Gene Snyder to the Los Angeles Dodgers for George 'Sparky' Anderson.
Anderson won't do much as a player, but will win three World Championships as a manager.

1975: Arbitrator Peter Seitz declares Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally free agents. Both pitchers sat out the option years of their contracts in the hopes they would become free to sign with any team.
Messersmith will sign with the Dodgers, while McNally, who announced his retirement in June, will not return.
Seitz's decision will lead to an agreement with the owners whereby all players will become eligible for free agency after six seasons.

1983: The Detroit Tigers signed Doug Bair as a free agent.

1984: The Detroit Tigers signed Johnny Grubb as a free agent.

1991: The Detroit Tigers signed Shannon Penn as a free agent.

1994: With negotiations to resolve the strike at a standstill, Major League owners unilaterally implement a salary cap and revenue sharing on striking players.

1994: Junior Felix of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1994: Gene Harris of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1994: Chad Kreuter of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Yurendell de Caster as a free agent.

2011: A U.S. District Court judge in Delaware deals a blow to Fox Sports in its quest to maintain an exclusive hold on broadcast rights for the Los Angeles Dodgers for another year. Judge Leonard Stark states that he will likely overturn a lower court ruling that authorized this provision, because the team's bankrupt status does not allow it to conclude deals that affect the long term, since the team is to be sold by April 30, 2012.
The deal would have prevented the new Dodgers' owners from approaching competitors to bid for the broadcast rights before November 30th and would have given Fox the right of first refusal on any deal.

2014: The Detroit Tigers signed Josh Wilson as a free agent.

2015: The Detroit Tigers signed Alberto Gonzalez as a free agent.
2015: The Detroit Tigers signed Logan Kensing as a free agent.
