1884: High winds tear off the roof of the Polo Grounds' grandstand.

1907: Philadelphia Phillies owners A.J. Reach and John Rogers are acquitted of damages resulting from the 1903 Baker Bowl disaster. A balcony collapsed at the Broad Street and Lehigh Avenue ballpark, killing 12 and leaving 232 fans injured.

1923: The St. Louis Cardinals announce that their players will wear numerals on their uniforms. The digits will be assigned according to the batting order.

1940: Future Hall of Famer Willie Stargell is born in Earlsboro, Oklahoma. Stargell will make his debut in 1962 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will hit 475 home runs during a 21-year major league career, helping the Pirates to World Championships in 1971 and 1979.

1945: Former Philadelphia Athletics catcher Harry O'Neill is killed in combat during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The 27-year-old O'Neill becomes the second former major leaguer to lose his life in the war. Elmer Gedeon, a one-time outfielder with the Washington Senators, was killed in 1944.

1973: Larry Hisle of the Minnesota Twins becomes the first designated hitter in major league history during an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1978: The Detroit Tigers traded John Valle (minors) and George Cappuzzello to the Cincinnati Reds for Jack Billingham.

1980: Milwaukee Brewers manager George Bamberger suffers a heart attack at the team's spring training camp in Sun City, Arizona. Bamberger will undergo quintuple bypass surgery, and is replaced on an interim basis by one of the team's coaches, Buck Rodgers.

1985: Enos Slaughter and Arky Vaughan are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

1987: Prized free agent Andre Dawson signs a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs worth $650,000, well below his market value. A former Montreal Expos star, Dawson had previously offered to sign a "blank check" contract with Chicago, because collusion prevents him from signing a contract at the market rate for his services.

1995: The Detroit Tigers signed Brian Bohanon as a free agent.

2001: Former Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star second baseman Bill Mazeroski and Negro Leagues pitching great Hilton Smith are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee.

2005: Suzyn Waldman becomes the first woman to be a full-time color commentator in major league history, making her debut with John Sterling on WCBS-AM 880, the radio flagship of the New York Yankees. The former radio-talk host on WFAN, the first all-sports radio station in United States, was also the first female to broadcast on a national baseball telecast, as well as the first to provide local TV (Yankees) major league play-by-play.

2006: Hall of Fame outfielder Kirby Puckett dies in Scottsdale, Arizona, at age 45, a day after suffering a massive stroke. Puckett, who led the Minnesota Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991, hit .318 with 207 home runs and 1085 RBI over 12 seasons. A 10-time All-Star and six-time Gold Glove winner, Puckett ended his career abruptly due to irreversible retina damage in his right eye.

2010: The Detroit Tigers released Michael Hollimon.

2014: The Detroit Tigers signed Nate Robertson as a free agent.

2014: Dr. Frank Jobe, the pioneer surgeon who performed the first ligament replacement surgery on pitcher Tommy John in 1974 and then popularized the technique that has saved hundred of pitchers' careers, dies in Santa Monica, CA at age 88. He had been a medical adviser to the Los Angeles Dodgers for 50 years, continuing even after his retirement from regular practice in 2008.

2014: Tigers prepare to install new sod at Comerica Park, after old field was removed for the NHL Winter Classic.

2016: The Commissioner's office overturns the two-game suspension handed to Dodgers IF Chase Utley for a dangerous slide that injured the Mets' Ruben Tejada in last year's NLDS. The decision is because the rules regarding sliding at the time were too vague; they have since been strengthened.

2019: Pitcher Steven Wright of the Red Sox is suspended for 80 games for violating Major League Baseball's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.
So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.
Today, we center the discussion on the candidates to fill the vacant role at first base, other than the couple of days when Miggy plays the position.
As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Detroit Tigers do not have a single player on their roster, with the exception of Miguel Cabrera, whose primary position is first base. Miggy will be returning to play first base, however his manager has stated that it will only be once to twice a week.
In the meantime, the Tigers need to fill that defensive position for the other 5-6 days of the week. There has been a discussion of ?first base by committee? that would include Jonathan Schoop, Jeimer Candelario, Niko Goodrum and Renato Nunez. Nunez was signed to a minor league contract and would have to earn a spot on the roster first.

So, who do you feel is the answer when it comes to filling the need at first base? Let us know what you think by participating in the survey below.
Other than Miggy, who is the strongest option at filling this first base need?

1. Jeimer Candelario
2. Niko Goodrum
3. Renato Nunez
4. Committee
5. Free agent signing

March 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1893: In arguably the most significant rule change in major league history, the National League eliminates the pitching box and adds a pitcher's rubber five feet behind the previous back line of the box, establishing the modern pitching distance of 60 feet 6 inches. In addition, bats flattened on one side to facilitate bunting are banned.

1902: Hall of Famer James (Pud) Galvin dies at the age of 45. Galvin won 361 games over a 14-year career, placing him in a tie for sixth on the all-time list for most wins. In 1883 and 1884, Galvin won a combined 92 games.

1903: In the first trade under the peace treaty, the New York Giants send their 1902 part-time manager Heinie Smith to the Detroit Tigers for second baseman Kid Gleason, who is immediately moved to the Philadelphia Phillies where he will end a 20-year playing career.

1919: Christy Mathewson, back from the World War I, rejoins the New York Giants as pitching coach and heir apparent to John McGraw.

1934: Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Billy Rogell, and Gee Walker pose for a photo during Spring Training.

1941: At Havana, the Brooklyn Dodgers roll over the Cleveland Indians, 15 - 0. Pee Wee Reese and Joe Medwick use a batting helmet designed by two Johns Hopkins Hospital doctors with the help of Larry MacPhail. The two Dodgers, victims of several hit by pitches last year, pronounce the helmets satisfactory. Brooklyn pitcher Van Lingle Mungo celebrates the victory a little too hard and when tomorrow's game is rained out, he continues to party. The result is that manager Leo Durocher sends him a note informing he's been reassigned to the Dodgers' minor league camp in Macon, Georgia.

1955: Commissioner Ford Frick states that he favors legalization of the spitter, "a great pitch and one of the easiest to throw".

1956: The Players Association accept the owners' decisions on minimum pay and the World Series television agreement. They seek workman's compensation coverage. The PA rehire J.M. Lewis as their representative.

1965: Detroit Tigers manager Chuck Dressen suffers a mild coronary occlusion. He will be sidelined until May 19th. Meanwhile, coach Bob Swift will be acting manager.

1979: Slugging outfielder Hack Wilson and longtime executive Warren Giles are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Wilson, who had a relatively short career, won four National League home run titles while with the Chicago Cubs. Giles served as president of the Cincinnati Reds from 1937 to 1951, before becoming National League President for 18 seasons.

1979: At spring training, exhibition season opens with semi-pro and amateur umpires in place of major league arbiters, who are staging a collective holdout which won't be resolved until a few weeks into the season.

1991: Cool Papa Bell dies in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 87. An outfielder with blazing speed, Bell played in the Negro Leagues from 1922 to 1946. Bell entered the Hall of Fame in 1974, joining fellow Negro Leagues stars Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard and Monte Irvin.

1995: The Special Veterans Committee elects former major leaguers Richie Ashburn and Vic Willis, former National League president William Hulbert, and former Negro League player Leon Day to the Hall of Fame. Day will die of a heart attack six days from now.

1999: In a historic agreement, it is announced that the Baltimore Orioles will travel to Cuba for a March 28th exhibition game against the Cuban national team in Havana. The Cuban team will travel to the United States for a return contest later this season. It is the first time in 40 years that a team from the USA will play a professional game in Cuba.

2000: The Detroit Tigers sent Gregg Zaun to the Kansas City Royals as part of a conditional deal.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Alfredo Figaro as a free agent.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Blaine Neal as a free agent.

2018: Ichiro Suzuki is returning to the place where his North American journey started, signing a one-year deal with the Mariners. The 44-year-old outfielder first played in the majors with Seattle back in 2001 and had his best seasons with the team.
