1886: Frank Baker is born in Trappe, Maryland. A third baseman and left-handed hitter, Baker will guide the Philadelphia Athletics to three World Series championships. He will be nicknamed "Home Run" during the 1911 World Series, in which he will hit a go-ahead home run off Rube Marquard in Game Two and a 9th-inning game-tying home run off Christy Mathewson in Game Three. Baker will lead the American League in home runs for four consecutive seasons, twice lead the league in RBI, and bat .363 in six Series. Baker will earn Hall of Fame honors in 1955.

1887: After a week of conditioning in Macon, Georgia, the Detroit Wolverines National League club team begins a six-week spring exhibition tour through the South and Midwest.

1917: After hearing that Gabby Street had caught a ball dropped off the Washington Monument in 1908, Brooklyn manager Wilbert Robinson brags that he could catch a ball dropped from an airplane at spring training, even though he is in his mid-50s and well above his playing weight. Robinson circles unsteadily under the descending spheroid. Instead, a grapefruit was secretly substituted and it explodes on impact with his glove. Once he feels the ooze, Robinson thinks it is blood, and screams that he is dying, until he tastes the juice. He later concedes that he probably would have been killed if a real baseball had been dropped from the plane. Aviatrix Ruth Law dropped the grapefruit as outfielder Casey Stengel assumed culpability for the switch.

1937 - Lou Gehrig signs with the New York Yankees for $38,000 and a $750 signing bonus.

1942: The Brooklyn Dodgers purchased Billy Sullivan from the Detroit Tigers.

1943: The Philadelphia Phillies selected Charlie Fuchs off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1943: The major leagues approve a new official ball manufactured by the Spalding Company for the upcoming season. Instead of the usual combination of cork and rubber, the inside of the ball is made up of recycled cork and balata, materials not needed in the war effort. Officials insist the ball will have the resiliency of the 1939 ball, but the players will express dismay that they cannot drive the new ball and point out the dearth of runs and homers in 1942 even with the old ball.

1953: Braves owner Lou Perini announces he will seek permission from the National League to move his franchise from Boston to Milwaukee. The day will become known as "Black Friday" in Beantown.

1954: Milwaukee Braves outfielder Bobby Thomson breaks his ankle while sliding into a base during a spring training game. The 1951 National League playoff hero is replaced by a promising prospect named Hank Aaron and the rest is history.

1960: The Chicago White Sox unveil an important uniform innovation. The Sox's road uniforms feature players' names on the backs of the jerseys, marking the first time that players' names will appear on major league uniforms. The innovation will make it easier for fans watching games on television to identify the players on the field. The idea is yet another creation of colorful White Sox owner and innovator Bill Veeck.

1969: In addition to this year's lower mound and tightened strike zone, Major League Baseball tries an experimental ball with 10% more resiliency for a spring training game between the Mets and Tigers in Lakeland, Florida. It has an all-rubber center instead of a cork and rubber core, and the seams are higher than the regular ball. Mets pitcher Don Cardwell surrenders three home runs in the 4th inning to Dick McAuliffe, Norm Cash, and Gates Brown in the Tigers' 7 - 4 victory.

1975: In Las Vegas, Nevada, the late Roberto Clemente joins Roy Campanella and twelve other sports figures, living and dead, as this year's inductees in the Black Athletes' Hall of Fame.

1979: The Detroit Tigers traded Ed Glynn to the New York Mets for Mardie Cornejo.

1987: The Philadelphia Phillies signed Lance Parrish as a free agent.

1995: Newly-elected Hall of Famer Leon Day dies in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 78. A former Negro Leagues outstanding pitcher and superb contact hitter, Day had been elected to Cooperstown by the Veterans Committee just six days earlier.

1996: The Detroit Tigers returned Jon Ratliff (earlier draft pick) to the Chicago Cubs.
1996: The Detroit Tigers selected Kimera Bartee off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

2000: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Oquist.
2000: The Detroit Tigers selected Shane Halter off waivers from the New York Mets.

2006: Legendary pitcher Bob Feller, who has been in the Hall of Fame longer than any other living player, says that controversial superstar Barry Bonds should be kept out of the exclusive club.

2013: The Detroit Tigers released Brennan Boesch.

2014: Crews work to thaw the field at Comerica Park after a March snowstorm, in preparation for Opening Day on March 31.

Like many teams this season, the Tigers were careful with their payroll and spent slightly less than they did last year. This year, they rank 24th in MLB payrolls, currently sitting around $72 mill.

They added a couple new players on one-year deals and their first multi-year offer in the last 5 years with the signing of Robbie Grossman for 2 seasons.
A number of veteran players were signed to minor league deals with incentives if they make the major league roster. Renato Nunez is one of those and he?s still young and under team control through 2024. He could be the first base solution if all goes well.

Then there?s also the surprise of the season ? Akil Baddoo, the Rule 5 draft pick who has performed exceptionally well so far.

And let?s not forget an entirely new manager and coaching staff (save 2).

Despite how little the Tigers spent, did they make smart signings? Does the value of the people they brought on board equal or exceed the contracts signed?

Sometimes it?s not about how little or how much money was spent. Sometimes it?s about the actual value received in return.

Not only is veteran Julio Teheran hitting as high as 94 mph on the radar gun, but he got three strikeouts on his slider in his most-recent outing.
Said Teheran, ?My slider is the best it?s been in a while. The last time I felt my slider was like this was my 2016 All-Star season. That?s the kind of confidence I have right now. I feel like I can throw my pitches anytime I want. My command is there. Just a different game when you have everything working.? The Tigers will owe Teheran $3MM at minimum if he makes the team, so there is a financial component to audition.
Still, Detroit has an active payroll of only around $75MM, per Spotrac, and a projected luxury tax payroll of around $94MM. Fangraphs? estimates for those payroll numbers to be closer to $81MM and $100MM, respectively. In either case, the Tigers shouldn?t need worry about an extra few million if Terehan proves worthy of a rotation spot.

March 14 in Tigers and mlb history:

1883: In a Northwestern League meeting, Peoria moves to ban black players in order to prevent Toledo from playing star catcher Moses Fleetwood Walker. After an "exciting discussion" the motion is withdrawn and Walker is allowed to play.

1894: A U.S. Immigration Inspector in Buffalo, NY asks the Treasury Department if baseball is a "recognized profession" in order to determine if Buffalo has violated the alien contract labor law by signing two Canadian players. Before the inspector gets a reply, Buffalo decides to play only American residents.

1932: The Cincinnati Reds acquire catcher Ernie Lombardi, outfielder Babe Herman, and infielder Wally Gilbert from the Brooklyn Dodgers for catcher Clyde Sukeforth and infielders Tony Cuccinello and Joe Stripp. Herman will bat .324 in one season in Cincinnati following the trade (he will later return to the club for two seasons), but Lombardi makes the trade a steal. Lombardi will bat .311 in 10 seasons in Cincinnati, winning a batting title and MVP Award in 1938.

1954: Hank Aaron makes his first spring training start for the Milwaukee Braves in an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. Aaron, taking advantage of an injury suffered by starting outfielder Bobby Thomson, raps out three hits, including a home run. The noise of the contact is so loud that Ted Williams runs out of the Boston clubhouse to see who can make that sound with a bat. Aaron will eventually start for the Braves on Opening Day and will go on to hit a respectable .280 with 13 home runs and 58 RBI in his rookie season.

1956: 50-year-old pitching star Satchel Paige signs a contract to play for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League. Paige also agrees to manage the team this season.

1961: The National League expansion franchise in New York names future Hall of Famer George Weiss as team president. Weiss retired as general manager of the Yankees in 1960.

1969: Exactly nine days after his splashy spring debut on March 5th, indicative of a full recovery from last season's right shoulder injury, Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente injures the other shoulder. "Clemente, who played last season with a bruised right shoulder," writes Charley Feeney in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, "injured his left shoulder when he attempted a diving catch of a foul fly in Friday's game against the Red Sox in Bradenton." After waiting 10 days for the shoulder to improve with no results, Clemente will return to Puerto Rico to consult his private trainer/chiropractor, Arturo Garcia.

1995: The Players Association announces that it will not settle the strike if replacement players are used in regular season games, and if results are not voided.

2003: Milwaukee Brewers TV/Radio play-by-play announcer Bob Uecker is chosen for induction into the broadcasters' wing of the Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. The 68-year-old former back-up catcher, who joined the Milwaukee broadcast crew in 1971, is best known for the humor he has brought to the game through his starring role in the cult movie Major League and the beer commercial in which the phrase Must be in the front row! has become a familiar cry in ballparks around the country.

2018: Minor League Baseball announces some changes to the rules that will be used throughout the minor leagues starting this season. First, there will be a limit of six mound visits per game in AAA, similar to the rule change just introduced in Major League Baseball; lower classifications will allow more visits: 8 in AA and 10 in Class A.
A 15-second pitch clock will be introduced with the bases empty, and 20 seconds with men on base. Finally, a variation of the Schiller Rule will be used beginning in the 10th inning, as each half inning will start with the batter preceding the first batter of the inning already on second base. That last rule was already in use in some Rookie-class leagues.

2019: Commissioner Rob Manfred announces rule changes for the coming season.
While the idea of a pitch clock has been dropped, other measures adopted include: lowering the number of mound visits from six to five, following the successful introduction of the rule in 2018; a shorter break between innings; making the July 31st trading deadline a hard one, with no trades allowed for the two remaining months of the season; a shift in procedure for nominating starters in the All-Star Game and additional bonuses for participants in the Home Run Derby; beginning next season, a clear roster limit, with 26 during the first five months and 28 for September, with all teams being required to respect the limits; and a minimum of three batters faced for relief pitchers, barring injury or the end of the half-inning, also starting with the 2020 season.
