August 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1886: The Detroit Wolverines purchased Pete Conway from the Kansas City Cowboys.

1912: At Comiskey Park, Walter Johnson relieves Carl Cashion with two outs in the 8th and stops the White Sox. Johnson throws another two innings of hitless ball and drives in the winning run to give Washington an 8 - 7 win. Johnson has now won 9 out of 10 decisions against the White Sox this season.

1922: Rogers Hornsby sets a new National League single-season home run record with his 28th, eclipsing a 38-year-old mark set by Ed Williamson of the Chicago White Stockings in 1884.

1923: Against the Browns, Babe Ruth again bats righthanded. After the Babe hits his 26th and 27th home runs off Ray Kolp, relief P Elam Vangilder takes no chances with Ruth and walks him intentionally in the 11th and again in the 13th inning. Ruth bats righty against Vangilder. Bob Meusel's single wins the game, 9 - 8.

1923: Kansas City Monarchs Hall of Fame pitchers Jos? M?ndez and Bullet Rogan combine for a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Bears, winning 7-0 at Kansas City's newly-opened Muehlebach Field. M?ndez pitches five perfect innings before being relieved by Rogan. Rogan walks the second man he faces, the only baserunner allowed in the game.

1929: Despite three triples by Charlie Gehringer, the Senators overwhelm the Tigers 21 - 5. Sam Rice and Buddy Myer each have four hits and four runs as every hitter in the lineup hits a safety. Gehringer will go on to lead the American League that season in hits, doubles, triples, and stolen bases.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjCfWVOW...jpg&name=small

1931: Detroit P Tommy Bridges has a brush with baseball immortality when he retires the first 26 Washington Senators to face him, before surrendering a hit to pinch hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers win the game 13 - 0. Charlie Gehringer has 4 hits with 2 rbi, CF John Stone and RF Earl Webb have 2 hits each and 5 RBI between them. But Tommy Bridges also with 2 hits and rbi, is the pitching star here as he also struck out 7 senators.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DF07KjLWsAAEGln.jpg:large

1934: While three teammates stand watching, a fly ball by Jimmie Foxx drops for a double, the only hit given up by Lefty Gomez in the 3 - 1 win by the Yankees over the A's.

1935: In a rain-soaked game between the Yankees and the Red Sox, Lou Gehrig leaves in the fourth inning with another lumbago attack. The teams engage in stalling and hurry-up tactics, and American League President John Heydler fines managers Joe Cronin and Joe McCarthy $100 each.

1937: Hank Greenberg hits his 100th career home run, at Shibe Park in the Tigers 5 - 3 win over the philadelphia athletics.

1942: White Sox 1B Don Kolloway's 2-out steal of home in the 5th inning is the only run of the game against Tiger lefty Hal Newhouser. Sore-armed Thornton Lee is the winner. There are seven games played today, and five end in shutouts.

1949: The Detroit Tigers traded Luis Aloma to the Chicago White Sox for Alex Carrasquel.

1955: After playing 274 straight games at 2B, Nellie Fox is given a day off by White Sox manager Marty Marion. Fox will come back the next day and play in 798 consecutive games.

1957: The Detroit Tigers signed George Thomas as an amateur free agent (bonus baby).

1959: Mickey Mantle breaks up a scoreless pitching duel between Detroit's Don Mossi and Bobby Shantz by belting an 8th-inning homer with one on. New York wins at home 3 - 0.

1959: Willie McCovey hits two home runs and Willie Mays another as the Giants whip the Braves' Bob Buhl, 4 - 1, to move into first place.

1964: After weeks of negotiating, Ford Frick tells the league presidents and club owners he will not run for another term as commissioner.

1969: Tigers win 4 - 3 over the twins on a Don Wert walk-off single in the 13th inning.

1969: Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a home run completely out of Dodger Stadium. The 512-foot, 7th-inning, bases-empty blast breaks a 3 - 3 tie, helping the Pirates defeat Los Angeles, 11 - 3. The 2,500th career hit of Roberto Clemente and a two-run homer from Bill Mazeroski figure prominently in Pittsburgh's seven-run 9th inning. Taking a no-decision in what will prove to be his final Major League appearance is Dodger starter Don Drysdale, pitching with a torn rotator cuff, which, despite assurances that it is "something I'm going to have to learn to pitch with," will lead to his retirement within less than a week.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E8CYJSsV...pg&name=medium

1972: Tiger shortstop Ed Brinkman commits an error, ending his major league record of 72 games and 331 total chances without making a misplay.

1973: Braves knuckleballer Phil Niekro no-hits the Padres, 9 - 0, and improves his record to 11-4. He walks three and strikes out four in recording the first no-hitter by the franchise in Atlanta.

1979: Willie Mays, Warren Giles, and Hack Wilson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1983: The Detroit Tigers released Bill Fahey.

1983: American League president Lee MacPhail suspends Yankees manager Billy Martin for the second time this season because of continuing abuse of umpires. Martin is suspended for two games for calling umpire Dale Ford "a stone liar" after a July 31st game with the White Sox. He earned a 3-game suspension earlier this year for kicking dirt on umpire Drew Coble.

1984: Game 2: Royals 4 - Tigers 0. Royals score 4 in the 1st but Juan Berenguer goes the distance after that. Alan Trammell hits a single & double as DH.
Tigers' 4th straight loss drops them to 72-38, reducing their lead to 8.5 games

1986: After Detroit wins the opener 6 - 5, game two starts off with Detroit's first two hitters - Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell - belting homers off Cleveland's Jose Roman. It is the 3rd time in a month this has occurred. Whitaker hits another as Detroit wins the shootout 11 - 9.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjChikMX...pg&name=medium

1990: Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan are rained out in Cooperstown, NY. The ceremony will be conducted the following day at a local high school.

1991: The Detroit Tigers signed John Moses as a free agent.

2000: Billy McMillon hits 2 home runs in his Tigers debut and the Tigers beat the twins 4 - 3.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjCvVNuX...pg&name=medium

2001: Detroit falls to Oakland by a score of 5 - 1. In doing so, the Tigers tie a major league record by scoring only one run in their 5th consecutive game. The last of the seven teams who did so were the 1968 Los Angeles Dodgers.

2001: Dave Winfield, Kirby Puckett, Bill Mazeroski, and Negro League star Hilton Smith are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2001: Trailing the Mariners, 14 - 2, the Indians, score 12 times beginning in the 7th inning to tie the score. Cleveland will win the game in the 11th inning, 15 - 14 making it the third time (after the 1911 Tigers and 1925 A's) a team has won after being behind by 12 runs.

2002: In a make-up game against the Angels, the Tigers host "Silent Night". The fans hear no electronic, video and commercial enhancements during Detroit's 6 - 3 loss to Anaheim at Comerica Park.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjriTqgX...g&name=900x900

2003: Justin Verlander pitches for Team USA against Nicaragua in the preliminary round of the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjrirP-XsAADoKG.jpg

2005: Albert Pujols becomes the first player to connect for 30 home runs in each of his first five big league seasons. The St. Louis Cardinals first baseman has hit 190 homers during this five-year span from the start of his career, equaling Eddie Mathews' total (1952-1956) and with 25 fewer than Ralph Kiner (1946-1950).

2007: Tom Glavine becomes the 23rd pitcher and fifth left-hander to win 300 games in the major leagues with an 8 - 3 victory over the Cubs. Glavine allows two runs in 6 1/3 innings for his 10th win of the year against 6 losses.

2012: The Chicago Cubs traded Jeff Baker to the Detroit Tigers for players to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent Marcelo Carreno (minors) (October 16, 2012) and cash (October 16, 2012) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.

2012: The Tigers rally for 5 runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull out a 10 - 8 win over the Indians. Cleveland leads, 8 - 5, with two outs and nobody on in the 10th when Chris Perez opens the floodgates by walking Alex Avila and Andy Dirks. Austin Jackson doubles in a run and Omar Infante follows with a two-run single that ties the game. Miguel Cabrera then hits his 27th homer to cap the wild win. Darin Downs earns his first major league victory.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FZPvf3XX0AAKEZh?format=jpg&name=medium
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EelPvXhW...ng&name=medium

2013: Major League Baseball hands out 13 suspensions in the Biogenesis Laboratories scandal, in one of the largest disciplinary actions in major league history. Alex Rodriguez is suspended for 211 games - until the end of the 2014 season - but decides to appeal, the only one of the 13 to do so. Seven major leaguers are handed 50-game suspensions that effectively end their season, while five minor leaguers are also disciplined. Ironically, Rodriguez plays his first game of the season for the Yankees following off-season hip surgery; he goes 1 for 4 and is mercilessly booed as New York goes down, 8 - 1, in Chicago.

2018: The Red Sox complete a four-game sweep of the Yankees thanks a stunning 9th-inning comeback against closer Aroldis Chapman who allows three runs by walking the bases loaded with two outs, then allows a two-run single to J.D. Martinez and sees the tying run score on an error by 3B Miguel Andujar. Andrew Benintendi then gives Boston a 5 - 4 win with a run-scoring single in the 10th. Boston now has a lead of 9 1/2 games after the two teams were neck-and-neck until late June.

2019: Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers: Miguel Cabrera hits a grand slam off LHP Blake Snell to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.
It was the 468th home run of his career, tying him with Hall of Famer Chipper Jones for 34th all time.

2022: The Seattle Mariners selected Derek Hill off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Now with the trade deadline over, and no new MLB-ready players acquired, it?s time to turn our attention to the next opportunity the Tigers will have to improve their roster.
And this means the off-season.

While the team will bring up a handful of players in September, it?s merely to get a sense of their development and how they may fit into the roster down the road.

In order to improve the team, we?ve got to identify the biggest problems Detroit is currently facing.
And there are a lot.
So how can we winnow down the issues that need to be addressed?

Let?s limit it to internal moves only which means that trades and free agency are, for now, off the board.
It must also involved the actual roster.

And because it is a given, we?re excluding Chris Ilitch and Al Avila from our lists. Been there, done that.

Given all that, here?s my top 5 concerns that must be addressed this off-season.

1. SOLVE OFFENSIVE PROBLEMS.

2. SPENCER TORKELSON.

3. INJURY EPIDEMIC.

4. POSITIONAL HOLES.

5. MIGGY.

August 6 in Tigers and mlb history:

1886: The Detroit Wolverines purchased Fred Dunlap from the St. Louis Maroons for $4,700.

1905: The Detroit Tigers purchased George Disch from Marshalltown (Iowa State).
1905: The Detroit Tigers purchased John Eubank from Fort Dodge (Iowa State).

1908: Ty Cobb marries Charlotte Lombard in Augusta, Georgia.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DF1CpqOXkAAqfbl.png

1912: Inspired in part by the Ty Cobb suspension and the Tigers' brief strike in May, the formation of a "Players Fraternity" is announced, headed by attorney and former player Dave Fultz. Leading players include Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Mickey Doolan, and Jake Daubert. The goals are to oppose contract violations, rowdyism, and anything that may "impair a player's ability."

1917: Veteran Eddie Plank, 41, hooks up with Washington's Walter Johnson in a brilliant 11-inning duel, won 1 - 0 by Johnson. For Plank, this is the last game of his outstanding career, and he will announce his retirement in a week, citing stomach problems as the reason. Pitching for the hapless Browns doesn't help as Plank's 1.79 ERA this season results in just a 5 - 6 record.

1938: Mickey Cochrane is fired as Detroit manager and is replaced with Del Baker.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Co3xNo2WYAE-Z_y.jpg

1941: Detroit P Al Benton collects two sacrifices in one inning, a major-league record.

1942: An editorial in The Sporting News argues for segregation on the diamond. The column states that members of each race "prefer to draw their talents from their own ranks and both groups know their crowd psychology and do not care to run the risk of damaging their own game."

1946: The Detroit Tigers signed Johnny Groth as an amateur free agent.

1947: Can a pinch runner drive in a run? Skeeter Webb of the Tigers takes the paths for Fred Hutchinson against the Indians and scores. Detroit bats around, and Webb lifts a fly ball that scores a run in the 9-run 8th. Stubby Overmire wins 13 - 6, in the first of 2. Detroit sweeps, winning the nitecap 7 - 5 behind Hutchinson.

1949: Luke Appling appears as a shortstop in his 2,154th game, surpassing Rabbit Maranville's major-league mark. Appling will finish with 2,218 games at the position.

1951: The Boston Red Sox selected Aaron Robinson off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1951: Lame duck Commissioner Happy Chandler testifies in front of the Senate committee, urging that baseball expand out of its eastern area. He adds that some owners see sport only as big business.

1952: The St. Louis Browns' Satchel Paige 46, beats Tigers Virgil Trucks 1 - 0 in 12 innings.

1953: Ted Williams is back in a Red Sox uniform after military duty in Korea. He will finish his abbreviated season with 13 homers and a .407 mark.

1961: Mickey Mantle leads the Yankees to a doubleheader sweep of the Twins, going 5 for 9 with three home runs and a double. His four RBIs give him an even 100 for the year and his homer total is now 43. In the opener, Mantle had two home runs off his favorite pitcher, Pedro Ramos, but it is Johnny Blanchard's homer in the 10th that ties the game at 6 - 6. In the 15th, Yogi Berra hits a bases-loaded grounder and just beats the throw at first to give the Yanks the win. The Yankees win the nitecap by a run as well, when Clete Boyer drives in Mantle in the 9th inning to break a 2 - 2 tie. New York now leads Detroit by 2 1/2 games.

1962: Detroit?s Steve Boros homers three times in one game, but Tigers come up short against the indians 6 - 5.

1963: Tigers beat the Red Sox 10 - 1, Rocky Colavito hits 16th home run w/ 3 RBIs.

1965: After going 7 for 11 against the White Sox, Mickey Mantle loops a homer off Mickey Lolich but Detroit tops the visiting Yankees, 5 - 4. New York will win tomorrow and Mick will add another homer.

1968: John Hiller sets a major league record by striking out his first 6 batters. The Tigers win 2 - 1 over the indians on a walk-off single by Dick Tracewski in the 17th inning.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C1grXwjX...jpg&name=small

1969: Twins manager Billy Martin punches his pitcher Dave Boswell at Detroit's Lindell AC on Michigan and Cass.

1972: Hitting his 660th and 661st career homers, Hank Aaron breaks Yankee legend Babe Ruth's record for most home runs with one team. Hammerin' Hank's second homer of the day is a 10th-inning blast which enables the Braves to beat the Reds, 4 - 3.

1973: Roberto Clemente and Warren Spahn head the list of new inductees at Cooperstown. Clemente is the first Latin-born player to achieve membership in the Hall of Fame, albeit posthumously.

1974: Norm Cash appears in his final game with the Tigers as a PH.
He hit 373 Homeruns w/1087 RBI + over 1000 Walks, + a 139 OPS+ as a Tiger.

1981: The players approve a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A's, Phillies and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions and will be automatically qualified for the 1981 Postseason.

1984: The Tigers and Red Sox split, with Detroit outslugging Boston in the opener 9 - 7, and Boston replying 10 - 2. Aurelio Lopez (8-0) wins the first game in relief as Chet Lemon and Lance Parrish each hit homers and drive in three runs.

1985: As announced three weeks ago, the Players Association keep their word and go on strike. The second mid-season work stoppage in history will last only two days.

1989: The New York Mets purchased Mike Trujillo from the Detroit Tigers.

1996: The Detroit Tigers selected Todd Van Poppel off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.

2001: The Hall of Fame Veterans Committee, comprised of five former players, five media members and five former executives, which was established in 1953, is to be replaced by a 90-member group made up of the members of the Hall of Fame (61), the recipients of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for writers (13), the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters (13) and current Veterans Committee members (3). The new committee will be able to elect players only once every two years and executives, umpires and managers only once every four years.

2010: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Rabelo.

2012: Pitching is the name of the game today. In Detroit, Justin Verlander racks up 14 strikeouts to beat the Yankees, 7 - 2, a career-best and the most in the American League this season.

2014: The Detroit Tigers signed Jim Johnson as a free agent.

2015: Victor Martinez hits 2 home runs. Ian Kinsler hits a walk-off home run and the Tigers beat the royals 8 - 6.

2019: The Detroit Tigers selected David McKay off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

2020: Jordy Mercer of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2021: The Detroit Tigers released Andrew Moore.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

Spencer Torkelson made the Opening Day roster this year but ended up struggling at the plate. Around the All-Star break, he was sent down to Toledo where he is continuing to struggle. He is currently hitting .212/.281/.346/.627.

The Tigers have not had a full-time 1Ber since 2020 and have been platooning since Tork?s demotion. He has been a plus defender at 1B.

Call-ups are in September. Should the Tigers bring him back to Detroit for more experience and evaluation? Another opportunity to prepare for the 2023 season?

They currently have no other prospects who are easily seen as candidates inheriting the 1B position.

Or will bringing him back only compound his offensive issues?
Should the Tigers keep him Toledo for the rest of the season?
Should Spencer Torkelson be called up in September?

1. Yes, bring him back to Detroit.

2. No, keep him in Toledo.

Tigers right-hander Beau Brieske had a Triple-A rehab start yesterday, and manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that Brieske is perhaps on track to be activated from the 15-day injured list in time to start the Tigers? game with the Guardians on Wednesday.

Forearm soreness sent Brieske to the IL on July 18, but it appears as though the rookie has avoided any serious setback ? a rare bit of good health news within an injury-plagued season for Detroit pitchers.
All of these injuries opened the door for Brieske to make his Major League debut, and the righty posted a respectable 4.19 ERA over his first 15 starts and 81 2/3 innings in the Show.

August 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1902: For the second time this year, Boston's Cy Young gives up 6 runs in the 1st inning and is lifted. This time, the Browns bomb him en route to a 12 - 4 victory in St. Louis. Young will complete 41 of 43 starts this year and win 32 games.

1904: The Detroit Tigers traded Charlie Carr to the Cleveland Naps for Charlie Hickman.

1906: On manager John McGraw's orders, umpire James Johnstone is refused admittance to the Polo Grounds, and the ump, standing outside the ballpark, forfeits the match to the Cubs. McGraw insists the game go on with a player from each team umpiring. McGraw picks reserve Sammy Strang, but Cubs manager Frank Chance refuses to go along, pointing out the game has already been forfeited.

1907: Senator hurler Walter Johnson wins his first major league game beating the Naps, 7 - 2. The "Big Train" will tally 416 victories during his 21-year career.

1911: The match-up between Three Finger Brown and Christy Mathewson is something less than a pitching duel as Chicago bangs out 10 hits, including two singles, a double and a triple by Joe Tinker. Tinker also adds a steal of home. The Giants collect 13 hits, but Chicago wins the game, 8 - 6.

1914: Grover Cleveland Alexander (16-9) shuts out the Reds and leads the Phillies offense with four hits, including a double, and two runs scored.

1915: At Fenway Park, Smoky Joe Wood fires a one-hitter, beating Cleveland, 2 - 0. Bill Wambsganss' single is the only Cleveland hit. For Wood, it is his fifth one-hitter, and the third over regulation distance.

1920: Following an all-night drinking bout and a fight at the Lamb's Club in New York, John McGraw will be indicted for violating the Volstead (Prohibition) Act and charged with assault, but he will be acquitted. He will also be called to testify in Chicago hearings investigating gambling and bribery among players, including Hal Chase and Heinie Zimmerman.

1922: Ken Williams hits two home runs (#29 and #30) in the 6th inning, off starter George Mogridge and reliever Eric Erickson, as the Browns score nine times against Washington in a 16 - 6 win. Williams is the first to do so since the 1890s. Both homers follow doubles by Baby Doll Jacobson, also tying a major-league record, as the Browns bang out a major-league record seven extra-base hits in the frame.

1922: A record ten Pirates collect two or more hits as the Pirates tally 22 hits to pound the seventh-place Phillies, 17 - 10. The Phils knock out the Bucs ace Wilbur Cooper, scoring six runs in 2 2/3 innings, but the Pirates score eight in the 4th to take the lead. Three Pirate pitchers are 5 for 5 at the plate, including Whitey Glazner's home run, and the only Buc batter to not contribute two safeties is cleanup hitter Clyde Barnhart.

1929: For the second game in a row, Babe Ruth hits a grand slam home run as the Yanks roll to a 13 - 1 win over the A's in the lidlifter. Mickey Cochrane homers in his one at bat for the A's only run as the Yankees score 10 runs in the first two innings. George Pipgras is the winner. The A's take the nitecap, 4 - 2, as George Earnshaw goes eight innings for the win.

1930: Chet Brewer and Smokey Joe Williams duel in one of the most famous Negro League games ever. Brewer fans 19 and allows 4 hits, while Williams whiffs 25 and gives up one hit in a 12-inning, 1 - 0 victory.

1934: Dizzy Dean becomes the first pitcher to reach 20 wins this season with a 2 - 0 shutout over the Reds.

1938: Hank Greenberg hits his 38th home run. It's his first of the month and will be his last until Aug. 19, but Greenberg will still threaten Babe Ruth's record of 60, finishing with 58.

1940: A crowd of 53,997, a National League record for a night game, watches the Dodgers beat the Giants, 8 - 4, on Mel Ott Night at the Polo Grounds.

1940: The Detroit Tigers traded cash plus two players to be named to the New York Giants for Dutch Meyer.

1948: Before 66,000 fans, New York's Vic Raschi (14-4) allows four singles in stopping the Indians, 5 - 0. Joe DiMaggio has a pair of doubles, drives in three runs, and swipes home on the front end of a double steal.

1950: Three white players of the Chicago American Giants are barred by police from participating in a Negro American League doubleheader against the Birmingham Black Barons.

1951: Bobby Doerr suffers a severe sacroiliac pain that forces the future Hall of Famer into early retirement. The Red Sox regular second baseman for 13 seasons, Doerr will become a Red Sox coach.

1951: In a day-night doubleheader the Dodgers sweep a pair from the Giants, taking the first game, 7 - 2, behind the solid relief of Carl Erskine. Gil Hodges, Duke Snider and Carl Furillo homer. Brooklyn takes the nitecap, 6 - 5, in 10 innings, after jumping on Sal Maglie for a 5 - 1 lead. Snider and Furillo homer again, while Bobby Thomson goes deep for the Giants. Billy Cox's RBI single wins it, giving the Dodgers an 11 1/2 game margin, the greatest lead in Brooklyn history.

1952: Umpire Bill McGowan is suspended indefinitely by the American League. In a game in St. Louis, McGowan had thrown out Tiger P Billy Hoeft, who had been heckling him from the dugout. When St. Louis writers, who have had a stormy relationship over the years with the veteran McGowan, ask him to identify the player, the umpire refuses, then adds an obscene gesture. The writers' complaint results in a suspension.

1955: After a 12-17 record in July, the Yankees are in a 4-team race. Tiger Frank Lary beats New York 4 - 2 in game one, and New York then earns a critical 3 - 2 10th-inning win on a Mickey Mantle homer off Babe Birrer.

1956: The Boston Red Sox fine Ted Williams $5,000 for spitting at Boston fans, as the Red Sox edge the Yanks in 11 innings on Williams's bases-loaded walk. It's the serial spitter's third incident in three weeks; in the words of Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey: "It's got to stop, that's all." The costly saliva salvo comes after the crowd of 36,350, a record for a night game at Fenway Park, starts booing the Splendid, but sensitive Splinter, for muffing Mickey Mantle's wind-blown fly with two out in the 11th. Immediately thereafter, the jeers turn to cheers when Williams redeems himself with a leaping grab of Yogi Berra's drive against the scoreboard. The Splinter, however, is not so easily appeased.
Thus, the fickle Fenway patrons find themselves the target of Teddy's spittle repeatedly as he makes his way towards the Red Sox dugout.

1961: The Detroit Tigers signed Willie Horton as an amateur free agent.

1963: Tigers win over the red sox 5 - 4 on a 3-run home run by Al Kaline at Tiger Stadium. Tigers set a major league record with their 12th straight errorless game.

1972: Sandy Koufax is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown! At just 36 years old, the Dodgers legend becomes the youngest player to be given the honor!

He is perfect until two are out in the 6th inning, when he issues a walk to Ehire Adrianza and a two-run homer to Dansby Swanson. He strikes out 12 batters as three pitchers combine for 19 Ks. DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Through Friday?s games, the Tigers sit in last place in the AL Central.
Their winning percentage ranks them third worst in all of MLB.

Starting with next year?s draft lottery, the rules are changing. No longer will the worst team be selecting first. The 6 worst teams will be picking via a lottery system.

The 3 worst teams will have a 16.5 % chance of picking first.
After that, the 4th worst will have a 13.25%, the 5th a 10% and the 6th a 7.5% chance of selecting first.

Currently, the Tigers have the best percentage chance of selecting before other teams.

Should the team aim for finishing within the top 3 worst teams so they can pick higher? Or should they finish the year playing to the best of their ability to help them determine how they plan for next year?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers' strategy be for finishing out the year?

1. Aim to finish in bottom 3 to enhance draft order.

2. Play to the best of their ability in preparation for next year.

You wonder what if Mr. I had allowed Dombrowski to remake the Tigers roster post 2015? What the next 7 years would have looked like. He essentially remade BOS, won a WS, and now PHI is winning 55% of their games. DET post 2016 has won 38.5% of their games.
