1906: Beset by injuries, the Tigers call 46-year-old Sam Thompson out of retirement; he drives in two runs in a 5 - 1 win over the Browns. Thompson, who last played in the majors in 1898, appears in eight games and bats .226.

1909: The A.J. Reach Company is granted a patent for its cork-centered baseball, which will replace the hard rubber-cored one. This change will be particularly apparent in the National League in 1910 and 1911.

1912: The Red Sox run their record to 87-37 with a 2 - 1 win over the A's. Following the game, Connie Mack says he never realized how strong the Sox were, and concedes the pennant to them. There are 30 games left for Boston.

1916: The Browns beat the Red Sox and Babe Ruth, 2 - 1. Ruth makes two hits and scores the lone run but pops out to end the game.

1931: In his attempt to break Walter Johnson's consecutive game winning streak of 17 games, Lefty Grove loses as Browns hurler Dick Coffman throws a three-hit shutout against the A's. Reserve Jimmy Moore, playing in place of the absent Al Simmons, misjudges a fly ball which leads to the decisive run and subsequently to Lefty's meltdown in the locker room.

1932: Detroit P Chief Hogsett hits two homers, as the Tigers end Tony Freitas' winning streak at 10 with a 5 - 4 victory over the A's.

1943: Detroit's Rudy York hits two home runs to bring his August home run total to 17, one less than his 1937 record for home runs in a single month, which he also set in August.

1948: The Red Sox keep their precarious hold on 1st place with an 8 - 4 win over the Tigers. Mel Parnell is the complete game winner. Ted Williams has two hits, scores two runs and steals a base.

1950: Gil Hodges becomes the fourth major leaguer in the century to hit four home runs in one game as Brooklyn routs the Braves, 19 - 3. The Dodger first baseman also ties the major league record for total bases with 17.

1953: The Detroit Tigers signed Reno Bertoia as an amateur free agent (bonus baby).

1957: In his second major league appearance, Lansing native Jim Stump earns what will be his only career win. He pitches 2 ? scoreless innings and lays down a sacrifice bunt to set up Harvey Kuenn's go-ahead sac fly in an 8-7 win in Cleveland.

1957: Steve Dalkowski, legendary minor league fastballer pitching for Kingsport (Appalachian League), strikes out 24, walks 18, hits four batters, and throws six wild pitches in a row. He loses, 9 - 8.

1959: Sandy Koufax fans 18 Giants to set a National League mark in a 5 - 2 Dodger win. The game is witnessed by a crowd of 82,974 spectators (60,194 of whom have paid admission), the largest ever for a regular-season game.

1988: The Detroit Tigers traded players to be named later and Chris Hoiles to the Baltimore Orioles for Fred Lynn. The Detroit Tigers sent Cesar Mejia (minors) (September 9, 1988) and Robinson Garces (minors) (September 9, 1988) to the Baltimore Orioles to complete the trade.

1993: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Eric Davis to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent John DeSilva (September 7, 1993) to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the trade.

1998: Oakland OF Rickey Henderson scores the 2,000th run of his career in the Athletics' 15 - 6 loss to Cleveland.

Here is today?s topic:

The Detroit Tigers are about to expand their roster by 2 players. It has been reported that they are having a hard time deciding if they will recall Spencer Torkelson who was sent down in July for offensive woes.
In 33 games (through Monday?s games), he is doing only slightly better, but still struggling. His slash line is .234/.349/.403/.753

There is a question whether or not the Tigers have anyone else deserving to be called up.

Should Tork be recalled? Would it help or hurt him?

Is he better off working with the Mud Hens hitting coach, Adam Melhuse or should he be in Detroit seeing MLB pitching and under the watchful eye of A. J. Hinch? Or will Scott Coolbaugh?s coaching derail any progress?

If not Torkelson, then who else would benefit from being in Detroit?

Should Spencer Torkelson be recalled to Detroit for September?

1980: Tigers OF Al Cowens and White Sox reliever Ed Farmer publicly end their long-running feud by shaking hands at home plate prior to Chicago's win at Tiger Stadium. The feud began in 1979 when Farmer broke Cowens' jaw with a pitch? and flared again this June 20th when Cowens hit a ground ball off Farmer and attacked the pitcher instead of running to first base. Cowens was suspended for 7 games and a warrant was issued for his arrest in Illinois? forcing him to skip the previous week's Tigers-White Sox series in Chicago. Farmer agreed to drop the charges in exchange for a handshake? and the two players bring out the lineup cards before today's game.

1983: The Detroit Tigers signed Bob Molinaro as a free agent.

1984: Tigers lose their 4th straight out west to fall to 87-49, Blue Jays win to cut the Tigers' lead to 8.5 games.

1984: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for Bill Scherrer. The Detroit Tigers sent Carl Willis (September 1, 1984) to the Cincinnati Reds to complete the trade.

2019: Justin Verlander pitches the third no-hitter of his career as the Astros defeat the Blue Jays, 2 - 0. Verlander issues only one walk in pitching the complete game, and is only the sixth pitcher to have performed the feat three or more times. It is the second time that the Jays are his victims, making him only the third pitcher to no-hit the same team twice.
