WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:
New President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, laid out the rules for the team during his introductory press conference. Referred to as the ?3 tenets?, they include a requirement of players to proactively pursue education and improvement while also controlling the strike zone.

Harris went on to say that he would be taking an in-depth look at the roster and that significant changes should be expected.

Last week, A. J. Hinch emphasized on back-to-back days that no one on the roster should consider their jobs to be safe.

But given all of this, the Tigers had also made an announcement that Miguel Cabrera would return for the 2023 season. He will be 40 and has been significantly hobbled by chronic injuries to his knee and other body parts.
As a result, his production, especially his ability to hit for power, has been dramatically reduced.

If you dig into the actual quote, it would appear that there is a condition attached to Miggy?s return. Hinch said ?We expect him to do his part in the offseason to prepare himself to be healthy and productive, and the icon that he is.?

Despite this comment that can be construed in several ways, the mainstream media has been reporting that Cabrera?s return is guaranteed. However, no other member of the roster has that promise.

Is it fair for the organization to have what is being perceived as a double standard?

Or does the fact that Cabrera?s outstanding achievements and certain induction into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot make him a legitimate exception?

Are the Tigers doing this as a sign of respect?

Or is this more about avoiding media controversy and riling the fan base?
What do you think about the Tigers? contradictory comments about earning roster spots?

What do you think about the Tigers? contradictory comments about earning roster spots?

1. Unhappy that there are 2 different standards.

2. Resigned to it because this is a unique situation.

3. Approve because Miggy has earned the respect and honor.

Tigers have designated RHP Drew Hutchison for assignment, according to transactions page. That would be the third time Detroit has DFAed him this year.

Hutchison finished second on team with 18 starts and 105 1/3 innings. He would've been arbitration eligible this winter.

Tigers also claimed infielder Jermaine Palacios off waivers from Twins, according to the transactions page. He made his MLB debut this season and played in 30 games for Minnesota.

2011: The Detroit Tigers turn to their ace, Justin Verlander, to stave off elimination in the ALCS. He limits the Texas Rangers' bats to 2 runs through seven innings, then tires and leaves in the 8th having thrown a career-high 133 pitches. With the Bengals' bullpen aces too tired to pitch, Phil Coke takes over and gets the last five outs, even though the Rangers manage to pull back 3 runs over the last two frames. Still, the Tigers had built a big lead against C.J. Wilson, with four home runs - two by Delmon Young and one each by Alex Avila and Ryan Raburn - and hang on for a 7 - 5 win. The Tigers hit for the cycle on four consecutive hits in the 6th hitting, the first team to do that in the postseason.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FBBiFeVV...jpg&name=small

2012: In Game 1 of the ALCS, Raul Ibanez hits a homer to cap a game-tying four-run outburst against Tigers closer Jose Valverde in the 9th inning, but Detroit manages to overcome the psychological blow to win, 6 - 4, in 12 innings. The Yankees' Derek Jeter collects the 200th postseason hit of his career in the game - second place on the all-time list is held by his long-time teammate Bernie Williams with 128 - but he then suffers a broken ankle while fielding a ground ball in the 12th, putting him out for the rest of the postseason. Delmon Young drives in 3 runs for Detroit, including a homer in the 8th and the game-winner with a double off David Phelps, the eighth Yankee pitcher of the game.

2013: the Tigers lose a heartbreaking game at Fenway Park in the second game of the AL Championship Series. Starter Max Scherzer holds the Red Sox hitless through 5 2/3 innings and strikes out 13 in seven innings before leaving the game with a 5-1 lead. But Joaquin Benoit allows a grand slam to David Ortiz in the eight inning on a ball that eludes right fielder Torii Hunter, who falls head-first into the bullpen in pursuit. The Tigers lose in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The loss ties the series at one game apiece.

2017: The Detroit Tigers and Al Avila make the worst trade in team history by trading a player to be named later, and greatest Tigers pitcher all-time Justin Verlander and cash to the Houston Astros for Daz Cameron (minors), Franklin Perez (minors) and Jake Rogers. The Detroit Tigers sent Juan Ramirez (minors) (October 13, 2017) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

2018: The Astros benefit from some largesse from Boston's pitchers as they issue 10 walks and hit 3 batters to win Game 1 of the 2018 ALCS, 7 - 2. Four of Houston's five hits drive in at least a run, including a pair of 9th-inning homers by Josh Reddick and Yuli Gurriel that provide 4 insurance runs. Justin Verlander also temporarily loses the plate, issuing 3 walks and a wild pitch in the 5th to allow the Red Sox to tie the score at 2, before a hit batsman, an error and a well-timed two-out single by Carlos Correa off Joe Kelly puts Houston ahead to stay in the 6th.

2022: Drew Carlton of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

The Detroit Tigers DFA'd Drew Hutchison for the 4th time in less than 2 years. This would appear to be the final one given that a new man is in charge.
It's also a testament to how bad things had gotten under Al Avila.

It's not just that Avila kept taking back a player no other team wanted.
It's also that Hutchison started the 2nd most games this year for the team - 18. Tarik Skubal was #1 with 21 GS.
Hutchison benefited from so many pitcher injuries.

But when you have that many injuries, and keep signing DFA'd pitchers, you have to question how all of these injured pitchers were trained and conditioned. Which is why Harris and Hinch are looking at those staffs this week.
Where there's smoke, there's fire.

1896: Future Negro Leagues star and Hall of Famer Oscar Charleston is born in Indianapolis.

1905: Christy Mathewson shuts out the Philadelphia Athletics, 2 - 0, to give the New York Giants the World Series in five games. All are shutouts, with Mathewson getting three, Joe McGinnity one, and Chief Bender of Philadelphia one.

1908: Before the smallest crowd in World Series history (6,210), the host Detroit Tigers are tamed on three hits by Orval Overall, who strikes out 10 in a 2 - 0 triumph. The Chicago Cubs win the World Series in five games. Upset over seating arrangements at the World Series, sports reporters form a professional group that will become the Baseball Writers Association of America.

1909: George Mullin of the Detroit Tigers outlasts three Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers for a 5 - 4 victory sends the World Series to a seventh game in Detroit. This is the first World Series to go the limit.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMBuxv1U...g&name=900x900
The first player to lead off a post season game with a HR was Detroit Tigers Davy Jones in 1909. He hit it to deep center field and it bounced over the wall for what today would be a ground rule double, but was a HR then.

1911: The Philadelphia Athletics go into the World Series minus their star rookie first baseman Stuffy McInnis. The veteran Harry Davis replaces him and drives in the first run as Chief Bender tries again to outpitch Christy Mathewson. The New York Giants are dressed in the same black uniforms they wore in their 1905 conquest of the Athletics, and this Series starts as their last meeting ended: Mathewson wins it, 2 - 1. The largest crowd ever to watch a ball game - 38,281 - is at the Polo Grounds. Gate receipts are $77,379.

1927: Walter Johnson retires as a player. "The Big Train retires with a 417 - 279 Won / Lost record, 2.17 ERA, a ML record 110 Shutouts, and at the time held the record for most Strikeouts with 3,509.
He will return to the majors as a manager.

1929: The Philadelphia Athletics rally for three runs in the 9th inning to beat the Chicago Cubs, 3 - 2, and take the World Series in five games. A two-run home run by Mule Haas ties the game and Bing Miller hits a RBI double to get the victory. There won't be another winning rally by a team down two runs in the 9th inning of a Series final game in the 20th century. The Arizona Diamondbacks, in 2001, will do it next.

1929: The Tigers sell one of their greatest hitters away when they send Harry Heilmann to the Cincinnati Reds for cash. Heilmann hit .344 in 1929 but will play only one season with the Reds before retiring.
Playing 15 seasons with Detroit, the right-handed hitting outfielder and future Hall of Famer won four batting titles, with 2,499 hits, 497 doubles, 145 triples, 164 home runs, 1209 runs, 1446 rbi, and batted .342/.410/.518/.927

1965: The New York Mets purchased Jack Hamilton from the Detroit Tigers.

1975: The Cincinnati Reds take a 2-1 lead in the World Series with a controversial 6 - 5, 10-inning victory over the Boston Red Sox in Cincinnati.
In the 10th inning, Reds pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister attempts a sacrifice bunt and bounces the ball in front of the plate. Boston catcher Carlton Fisk, in an attempt to field the ball, collides with Armbrister and throws the ball into center field while trying to force Cesar Ger?nimo at second base. Ger?nimo goes to third base and later scores the game winner, as Armbrister moves to second. Home plate umpire Larry Barnett rules there is no interference despite heated protests by the Red Sox.

1984: Kirk Gibson hits two home runs and Lance Parrish hits the other home run to lead the Detroit Tigers to an 8 - 4 victory and the Tigers 4th World Series Championship in game 5 over the San Diego Padres.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

New PoBO Scott Harris and Manager A. J. Hinch are hard at work now that the season is over and Harris has gone through his orientation. Their to do list, especially Harris?, is impossibly long.

Part of what they need to address is the mess left by former GM, Al Avila. One of the most important tasks will be to reassess players who have been ignored and left on their own, those who received spotty instruction and others who have been off the radar for awhile.

The player development system is almost 1 year old and not fully established by any means. Many players, including all the top draft picks, suffered under the old system for years while only having access to Ryan Garko?s new department for part of one year.

The Tigers need to go in and see what they can salvage before even more talent falls through the cracks. As I blogged about earlier in the week, out of the team?s top 20 draft picks from 2018, only 7 players remain. That is just pitiful. (I?m tempted to say something else but this is a respectful blog?.)

All these years of tanking need to demonstrate as many positive outcomes as possible. The team needs to reclaim and maximize as much talent as possible if they doesn?t want to have to go through yet another rebuild.

So who are the players who are most important to this organization? The ones the team needs if Detroit is going to move forward and show measurable progress?

I?ve got my top 5. But before I list them, here is my rationale.

I am not including Riley Greene. He has adapted well for his first year in the majors. He is the least of my worries.

I am also not considering players who have recently had surgery, like Casey Mize, and will be out for the entire year. I?ll worry about them next season.
