Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera battling second-longest hitless streak of his career.
It?s time to call it what it is -- a slump.
And, Miguel Cabrera is in the midst of it right now.
A week after Cabrera earned himself American League Player of the Week honors, the reigning AL batting champion hasn?t registered a hit in his last 21 at-bats.
It?s the second-longest hitless streak of his 10-year career, but easily his longest as a Tiger.
And, it?s the first time he?s gone hitless in five straight games since an 0-for-23 stretch in late August of 2003 -- his rookie campaign.
After hitting .455 with three home runs and eight RBIs in the opening week, Cabrera?s average has dropped to .222 after he was hitless in three at-bats against the Royals on Monday.
At the time of earning AL weekly honors, Cabrera had the third-best slugging percentage of 1.273 in the league. That has dropped to .500 -- 55 points lower than his career average.
In the past five games, Cabrera is sporting a less-than-mediocre 5:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but the tide may soon change for the 28-year-old slugger.
The Kansas City Royals will start Bruce Chen on the mound Tuesday -- a left-hander that Cabrera has found considerable success hitting against in the past.
In 18 career at-bats against Chen, Cabrera is batting .500 with three homers, seven RBIs and two doubles. He has played in all 10 games this season and will bat third Tuesday.
